13 arrested in Mayiladuthurai for sale of illicit liquor, ganja

Thirteen persons were arrested in Mayiladuthurai district for illegal sale of liquor and ganja during a crackdown led by the district prohibition police on Saturday.

Acting on the orders of Mayiladuthurai District Prohibition Deputy Superintendent Sundaresan, inspectors Annai Abirami and Jaya patrolled Mayiladuthurai and Sirkazhi when they arrested six individuals on charges of indulging in illegal sale of liquor.

The names of the arrested were given as Stephen Raj, 26, from Kadalangudi, Kannadasan, 52, from Mananthiruvazhal, Rajendran, 60, from Tharangambadi, Saravanan, 50, from Senniyanallur, Rajesh, 55, from Kodangudi, and Mahendran, 43, from Umayalpathi. Liquor bottles and alcohol sourced from Puducherry were seized from the arrested persons.

In a similar crackdown, seven individuals were arrested on charge of peddling ganja. The names of the arrested were given as Muthaiya, 50, from Thirumullaivasal, Manivannan, 40, from Ezhumagalur, Meyyappan, 70, from Thenpathi, Selvagumar, 33, from Memathur, Sellathurai, 55, from Kodangudi, Murugan, 42, from Veppancheri, and Raji, 40, from Madappuram.

All the 13 arrested were produced in court and subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
