Fire and Rescue Services teams from central districts rushed join rescue operations in cyclone-hit regions

Fire and Rescue Services personnel from three districts in the central region have been rushed to Villupuram district, which is reeling under unprecedented floods caused by Cyclone Fengalto carry out rescue operations in the flooded areas. Armed with necessary paraphernalia required for rescue mission, the teams left on Sunday for Villupuram.

A 20-member Fire and Rescue Services team drawn from various fire stations in Tiruchi district was mobilised and despatched to Villupuram with a boat and an Emergency Rescue Tender. Ten personnel each from Thanjavur and Perambalur districts were sent to Villupuram with boats and emergency rescue tenders.

The teams were armed with power saws, inflammable torch lights, life jackets, ropes, search lights, portable generator sets, and cutters to carry out their mission, said Fire and Rescue Services department officials.

Villupuram, its nearby towns and villages have borne the brunt of heavy rain disrupting life.   Police teams from the central region, headed by senior police officers, have been sent to Villupuram district to aid in rescue operations besides for security duty in various areas.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tiruchi Range, Superintendent of Police of Perambalur and Tiruvarur districts have left for Villupuram district along with police teams. Two platoons containing around 120 police personnel from the Armed Reserve units in Thanjavur and Tiruchi went last night to Villupuram district for deployment in the affected areas, said police sources here.
