Mr. Stalin requested that Mr. Modi “send a Union committee to carry out a detailed assessment of the storm damage”.
“I am sure that the Prime Minister will immediately consider this request of Tamil Nadu and take appropriate measures,” wrote Mr. Stalin.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Stalin had urged him to release ₹2000 crore from the NDRF to aid emergency restoration and rehabilitation efforts.
“The districts of Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Kallakurichi, in particular, received rainfall equivalent to an entire season’s average (more than 50 cm) in a single day, resulting in widespread flooding and severe damage to infrastructure and crops,” he wrote.
“A dedicated workforce comprising 38,000 government officials and 1,12,000 trained first responders are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations… Despite our best efforts, the scale of this disaster has overwhelmed the State’s resources,” he said.
Villupuram district in north Tamil Nadu continued to reel under unprecedented flooding on Monday following extremely heavy rainfall, virtually blocking access to villages and residential colonies as bridges and roads were submerged and inundating huge acreage of standing crops.
In Tiruvannamalai, tragedy unfolded as five bodies were recovered from a house crushed by a boulder that rolled down a hilltop following a mud slip on the night of December 1 during rains.
