Government accords administrative sanction for constructing groyne fields in Alappuzha

Amidst coastal erosion and sea surge wreaking havoc in the coastal areas of Alappuzha, the State government has accorded administrative sanction for the revised estimate of ₹107.75 crore to construct groyne fields at Ottamassery, Kattoor-Pollethai, Kakkazham and Nellanickal.

The work was initially awarded to a company in 2022. However, prior to the commencement of the project, a bathymetry study revealed an increase in depth, particularly at Kakkazham. Subsequently, the estimate was revised based on a new design prepared by IIT-Madras based on the bathymetry study.

The Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) will act as the special purpose vehicle for implementing the project. It will be funded through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board.

The government has also awarded the work to Ramalingam Construction Company Limited, Erode in Tamil Nadu.
