Low pressure area over the Bay becomes well-marked

The low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean has moved and become a well-marked low pressure area over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Additional Director General of Meteorology S. Balachandran said that as a result of the system, over the next four days, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal will witness widespread light to moderate rainfall. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards Sri-Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts during the next 24 hours. “The system has moved slowly and is not likely to develop into a cyclone. But it will bring rain to the State as it makes a landfall and move inland from the east,” he said.

On Wednesday, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places.

Orange alert has been issued for Delta districts. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Pudukkottai districts of Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

On Thursday, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lighting at one or two places. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai and Tiruchi districts of Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Karur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi and Dindigul districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry and Karaikal regions.

Northeast monsoon: State records 45 cm of rainfall

As far as the progress of the northeast monsoon is concerned, from October 1 to December 10, the State has recorded 45 cm of rainfall, which is 16% more than the usual quantum of 40 cm. Only three districts have a deficit of rainfall, 22 have recorded the usual quantum and 15 have received more than the usual amount of rainfall, he said.
