District education officer directs private schools in Bihar’s Kishanganj to teach Urdu

NEW DELHI: District education officer (DEO) of Kishanganj, Nasir Hussain, has directed private schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the district to offer Urdu as a subject.
The DEO issued a formal letter to all private schools, instructing them to include Urdu in their curriculum, particularly in this “minority-majority” district.

Hussain emphasised that schools must make the necessary arrangements for students to study Urdu and submit a compliance report to the Bihar Education Project Office.
The official order, dated December 12, 2024, requests all CBSE-recognized private schools in Kishanganj to ensure the availability of Urdu lessons for interested students and to report accordingly.
This move follows concerns raised during a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) in October 2024, where Congress MP Javed Azad and MLA Izharul Hussain pointed out that Urdu was not being taught in private schools in the area.
