Patna: Train services across the northern and eastern routes continued to suffer disruptions on Tuesday due to dense fog, particularly affecting the Delhi-Kanpur-Prayagraj-DDU-Patna corridor. Travellers faced prolonged delays as visibility dropped to near zero, stranding many passengers without clear updates on departures.
Rajesh Sinha, who travelled on the New Delhi-Jayanagar Swatantrata Senani Express (12562) on Monday, described scenes of confusion at New Delhi station. “Dense fog blanketed the tracks, reducing visibility to nearly zero. Many north Bihar-bound passengers were left in the cold with no clear information about their trains,” he said.
Despite the fog, some trains managed to stay on schedule. Sources said the New Delhi-Rajendra Nagar Terminal Tejas Rajdhani Express (12310) and New Delhi-Rajendra Nagar Terminal Sampoorn Kranti Express (12394) reached Patna on time, aided by scratch rakes. However, others like the New Delhi-Rajgir Shramjeevi Express (12392) and New Delhi-Islampur Magadh Express (20802) arrived in Patna 40 to 50 minutes late.
The Samastipur control room recorded severe delays for other trains passing through the region. The Lalgarh-Dibrugarh Awadh Assam Express (15910) was six hours late while the New Delhi-Jayanagar Express (12562) ran two hours behind schedule. “It was a similar situation for most mail and express trains passing through the division,” a source said.
Sonepur divisional railway manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood attributed the delays to foggy conditions, which slowed trains to ensure safety. “Most passenger trains originating from the NCR region were delayed when they reached our division on Tuesday. The dense fog also affected train movements within the division,” he said.
The thick fog also disrupted services on the Moradabad-Lucknow-Gorakhpur-Siwan-Chhapra-Hajipur route, causing hardship for passengers, especially those in sleeper and general coaches. Vishnu Kumar, who travelled from Delhi to Muzaffarpur via Hajipur, said, “Long-distance trains from Delhi and Punjab were heavily delayed. It was particularly tough for passengers in the general compartments.”
