  • Why Trudeau’s Exit Could Mean End Of The Road For Indian Students, Workers

Why Trudeau’s Exit Could Mean End Of The Road For Indian Students, Workers

The resignation of Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau has sparked intense discussions among immigration experts about the future of international students there. Many experts view Trudeau’s tenure from 2015 to 2023 as a golden era for international students, particularly Indians, who greatly benefited from liberal immigration policies.

According to data from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), approximately 1.3 million Indian students received study permits between 2015 and 2024. In 2015, only 31,920 Indian students held study permits, accounting for 14.5% of the total international student population. By 2023, this number surged to 278,250, representing 40.7% of the total international student population.

However, new measures introduced by the Canadian government, such as capping the number of international students and tightening study permit processes, have led to a 4% decline in Indian students receiving study permits in 2024. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who, at the age of 20 already had a roadmap for Canada, has been critical of Trudeau’s handling of the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program, stating that “the government has destroyed the TFW program.”

Poilievre plans to preserve the program for the agricultural sector but block temporary foreign workers where they are taking jobs from Canadians. He has also criticised Trudeau’s decision to scale back immigration levels, saying “Trudeau’s last-minute pre-election reversal cannot be believed. He can’t fix the immigration system that he broke.”

With Poilievre likely to become a major player in the upcoming election, his promises on immigration are expected to be a significant issue. He has pledged to restore Canada’s once-effective immigration system and ensure it is better managed in the future. If Poilievre assumes office, international students may face increased challenges due to healthcare, job, and housing availability, making permits for studying in Canada harder to obtain.

The potential changes to Canada’s immigration policies under Poilievre’s leadership may significantly impact Indian students and immigrants. With Poilievre’s proposal to tie immigration rates to job availability, healthcare, and housing, it may become more challenging for Indians to obtain study permits or permanent residency. The eligibility criteria for work programs may also be revised, reducing chances of permanent residency.

The increase in competition for admission to Canadian universities and colleges may also pose a challenge for Indian students. With the government’s plan to cap the number of international students, Indian students may face stiffer competition for limited spots. Moreover, the tightening of study permit processes may lead to longer processing times and stricter eligibility criteria, making it harder for Indian students to pursue their educational goals in Canada.

Furthermore, Poilievre’s plan to “block temporary foreign workers where they are taking jobs from Canadians” may also impact Indian immigrants working in Canada. This could lead to a reduction in job opportunities for Indian immigrants, making it harder for them to support themselves and their families. Overall, the potential changes to Canada’s immigration policies under Poilievre’s leadership may create significant challenges for Indian immigrants and students seeking to make a new life in Canada.

  • Drone Lands Near Bhopal Jail Cells With 69 Terrorists, Spotted After 8 Days

Drone Lands Near Bhopal Jail Cells With 69 Terrorists, Spotted After 8 Days

A high-security jail in Bhopal finds itself in the eye of a storm after a China-made drone was discovered inside its premises. The drone reportedly lay undetected for eight days before it was finally spotted by a staffer in Bhopal Central Jail on Wednesday, raising serious questions about security lapses and negligence.

It was located by a duty guard near B block – a section close to the high-security ‘anda cells’ – called so because of their oblong shape – housing 69 terrorists – in the ISO-certified prison.

Critics have raised concerns about the apparent negligence of jail authorities, who failed to detect the drone in a facility where security is paramount.

Speaking to reporters, Narendra Shivaji Patel, a minister in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s cabinet though praised the vigilance of the security personnel. “If anyone saw the drone first, it was our security team,” he stated.

He assured, “Due to the alertness of our jail management, the drone has been recovered. A comprehensive investigation is underway.”

The drone has been claimed by a local doctor.

However, Rakesh Bangre, the jail superintendent, cited confusion as the reason for the oversight. “There was some misunderstanding, which is why the guard might not have noticed the drone initially,” he said.

The drone, equipped with two cameras, has been claimed by a local doctor, Dr Swapnil Jain, who said he bought it for his son. Bhopal Police Commissioner Hari Narayanchari Mishra, along with his team, tested the drone and confirmed the doctor’s claim.

“The drone went out of control on December 31 and fell near the Anda Cell. We found it yesterday and have identified its owner,” Mr Bangre explained.

Despite the jail’s multi-layered security, including jammers and CCTV, the incident has highlighted vulnerabilities.

The discovery has fueled anxiety given the proximity of the drone to the ‘anda cell’, which holds terrorists from organisations like SIMI (Students’ Islamic Movement of India), PFI (Popular Front of India), HuT (Hizb ut-Tahrir), JMB (Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh), and ISIS.

The jail has a capacity of 2,600 inmates but currently houses 3,600. Despite the overcrowding, strict measures are in place, with two guards assigned per terrorist. Inmates are allowed outside for limited hours each day under close watch.

The government is now considering stricter measures, including declaring the jail and its surrounding areas as a “no-fly zone.”

The jail hit headlines when on the intervening night of October 30 and 31, 2016, when eight undertrial prisoners, accused of being members of SIMI, escaped from the facility. These individuals were later killed in a controversial police encounter, approximately 15 km from the jail, raising numerous questions about the nature of the operation and the security measures at the jail.

Over the years, several cases of violence were reported from the jail.

On December 27, 2017, a violent clash over standing in a queue left one prisoner severely injured. On April 14, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a minor altercation over food escalated into a full-blown brawl between prisoners. On February 20, 2023, SIMI terrorist Ejaz stabbed another prisoner with a blade following an argument

On November 6, last year, a prisoner named Rajesh, attacked Shahid, who was imprisoned over his links with ISIS.

  • PM Modi Makes Podcast Debut With Zerodha Co-Founder Nikhil Kamath: “Don’t Know How It’ll Go”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the next guest on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast series called ‘People By WTF’, a new trailer has revealed. Earlier, the Zerodha co-founder had sparked buzz online with a teaser of the upcoming episode of his podcast, where he was seen talking to a mysterious guest in Hindi. The promo clip sent social media into a frenzy with many speculating that the guest was none other than PM Modi. Now, the billionaire shared a two-minute trailer of the episode with the caption, “People with The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi | Ep 6 Trailer”.

The video shows Mr Kamath in a candid conversation with the Prime Minister. “I am sitting here in front of you and talking, I feel nervous. It’s a tough conversation for me,” the entrepreneur says in the video in Hindi. “This is my first podcast, I don’t know how it’ll go with your audience,” a smiling PM Modi responds.

PM Modi also reposted Mr Kamath’s post with the caption, “I hope you all enjoy this as much as we enjoyed creating it for you!”

    Watch the video below:

In the trailer, the Zerodha co-founder shared his vision for the episode of the podcast, saying that he wanted to draw parallels between politics and entrepreneurship. The billionaire also asked the Prime Minister about the current state of the world, with wars raging in certain parts of the world.

The duo also talked about PM Modi’s old speeches when he was a chief minister. “I said something in an insensitive way. Mistakes happen. I am human, not a God,” he said.

Further, the two discussed the Prime Minister’s two consecutive terms in office. “Growing up in a South Indian middle-class home, we were always told that politics is a dirty game. This belief is so ingrained in our psyche that it is almost impossible to change it. What is your one advice for people who think the same?” Mr Kamath asked.

“If you believed in what you said, we would not be having this conversation,” PM Modi responded.

“No Error”: Top Court Rejects Pleas On Review Of Same-Sex Marriage Verdict

Noting that there was no “error apparent” and no “interference is warranted”, the Supreme Court has dismissed petitions seeking a review of its October 2023 judgment in which it refused to grant legal sanction to same-sex marriage.

Having refused an open hearing on the petitions earlier, a bench of Justices B R Gavai, Surya Kant, BV Nagarathna, PS Narasimha and Justice Dipankar Datta considered the petitions in chambers and said that it had gone through the judgments of Justice Ravindra Bhat (speaking for himself and Justice Hima Kohli), and Justice PS Narasimha – which constituted the majority – and found no error in them.

“We have carefully gone through the judgments delivered by Hon’ble Mr. S. Ravindra Bhat (Former Judge) speaking for himself and for Hon’ble Ms Justice Hima Kohli (Former Judge) as well as the concurring opinion expressed by one of us (Hon’ble Mr Justice Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha), constituting majority view. We do not find any error apparent on the face of the record,” the bench said.

“We further find that the view expressed in both the judgments is in accordance with the law and, as such, no interference is warranted. Accordingly, the review petitions are dismissed,” it added.

The bench hearing the review petitions was constituted after Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who is now the Chief Justice of India, recused from hearing them in July 2024.

PS Narasimha is the only member of the original Constitution bench that had delivered the original verdict as former Chief Justice Of India DY Chandrachud and Justices SK Kaul, Ravindra Bhat and Hima Kohli have retired.

  • Sundar Pichai On Google Campaign To Help “Thousands Of Googlers” Hit By US Wildfires

Sundar Pichai On Google Campaign To Help “Thousands Of Googlers” Hit By US Wildfires

Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasised the significance of being “one team” as “thousands of Googlers” were dealing with devastating wildfires across Southern California. In an email to employees, Mr Pichai mentioned a Google campaign to help in the wildfire relief efforts.

The worst wildfires in the history of Los Angeles raged across the city and deep into the storied heartland of the American film industry. The homes of movie stars and celebrities were among those consumed by flames, which tore through some of the world’s most lavish real estate and above showbiz landmarks instantly recognisable around the world.

Google’s philanthropic arm Google.org is supporting relief and recovery efforts with funding and an employee matching campaign.

“Our thoughts are with the people and communities affected by the greater Los Angeles wildfires. We have been working closely with local authorities to provide accurate and timely information through our products and services,” the company said in a statement.

The company said people in the affected areas can access SOS alerts, public alerts and wildfire boundaries across Google Search and Maps. “Road closure information is available on both Google Maps and Waze, with Waze also providing emergency shelter locations. These alerts and resources are continuously updated to provide critical safety information from authoritative sources,” it said.

“We are actively monitoring the situation, and we will continue to work with public authorities, share timely information through our products and provide support to the people and communities who are impacted,” it added.

The scale and spread of the blazes stretched exhausted firefighting crews beyond their capacity with at least six separate wildfires – three of them totally out of control – burning in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles Fire Department issued an evacuation order for people in an area within Hollywood Boulevard to the south, Mulholland Drive to the north, the 101 Freeway to the east and Laurel Canyon Boulevard to the west – all iconic addresses for film, TV and music. The Hollywood Sign is across the freeway.

On the west side of Los Angeles, the Palisades fire consumed 15,832 acres (6,406 hectares) and hundreds of structures in the hills between Santa Monica and Malibu, racing down Topanga Canyon until reaching the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday.

Musk acknowledges $2 trillion spending cut goal a long shot

Elon Musk, who U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped to oversee a government cost-cutting effort, acknowledged that his declared goal of cutting $2 trillion in spending from the $6.8 trillion federal budget would be a long shot.

“I think if we try for 2 trillion, we’ve got a good shot at getting 1,” Mr. Musk, the world’s richest person, said in a discussion on Wednesday with Mark Penn, a political strategist and former pollster. He described the $2 trillion target as a “best-case outcome.”

Mr. Trump named Tesla CEO Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead an outside task force called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to focus on cutting federal spending and regulations to improve government efficiency.

Achieving Mr. Musk’s goal will be challenging given that about two-thirds of existing federal spending goes to programs that Trump has either promised not to cut or would be unable to cut – including the Social Security and Medicare programs for retirees, defense and veterans’ benefits and interest payments on the nation’s growing $36 trillion debt pile.

Mr. Trump has begun meeting with congressional Republicans to try to plot a course for his legislative agenda, including tax cuts and a crackdown on illegal immigration, though so far lawmakers have failed to agree on how to move forward.

  • Firefighters battle devastating Los Angeles wildfires as winds calm somewhat

Firefighters battle devastating Los Angeles wildfires as winds calm somewhat

Firefighters battled early Thursday (January 9, 2025) to control a series of major fires in the Los Angeles area that have killed five people, ravaged communities from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena and sent thousands of people frantically fleeing their homes.

Ferocious winds that drove the flames and led to chaotic evacuations have calmed somewhat and were not expected to be as powerful during the day. That could provide an opportunity for firefighters to make progress reining in blazes that have hopscotched across the sprawling region, including massive ones in Pacific Palisades and Altadena.

The latest flames broke out Wednesday (January 8, 2025) evening in the Hollywood Hills, striking closer to the heart of the city and the roots of its entertainment industry and putting densely populated neighbourhoods on edge during exceptionally windy and dry conditions. But only about a mile away, the streets around the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds were bustling, and onlookers used their phones to record video of the blazing hills.

Within a few hours, firefighters had made major progress on the Sunset Fire in the hills. Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said they were able to keep the fire in check because “we hit it hard and fast and mother nature was a little nicer to us today than she was yesterday.”

A day earlier, hurricane-force winds blew embers through the air, igniting block after block in the coastal neighbourhood of Pacific Palisades as well as in Altadena, a community near Pasadena that is about 40km east. Aircraft had to be grounded for a time because of the winds, hampering firefighting efforts.

Nearly 2,000 homes, businesses and other structures have been destroyed in those blazes — called the Palisades and Eaton fires — and the number is expected to increase. The five deaths recorded so far were from the Eaton Fire.

Some 1,30,000 people have been put under evacuation orders, as fires have consumed a total of about 108 square km — nearly the size of the entire city of San Francisco. The Palisades Fire is already the most destructive in Los Angeles history.

As flames moved through his neighbourhood, Jose Velasquez sprayed down his family’s Altadena home with water as embers rained down on the roof. He managed to save their home, which also houses their family business selling churros, a Mexican pastry. Others weren’t so lucky. Many of his neighbours were at work when they lost their homes.

“So we had to call a few people and then we had people messaging, asking if their house was still standing,” he said. “We had to tell them that it’s not.”

In Pasadena, Fire Chief Chad Augustin said the city’s water system was stretched and was further hampered by power outages, but even without those issues, firefighters would not have been able to stop the fire due to the intense winds fanning the flames.

“Those erratic wind gusts were throwing embers for multiple miles ahead of the fire,” he said.

The dramatic level of destruction was apparent in a comparison of satellite images before and after the fire.

A swath of about 250 homes in an Altadena neighbourhood that had been dotted with the green canopies of leafy trees and aquamarine swimming pools was reduced to rubble. Only a few homes were left standing and some were still in flames in images from Maxar Technologies. Along a stretch of about 70 wall-to-wall homes overhanging the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, fewer than 10 appeared to be intact.

In Pacific Palisades, a hillside area along the coast dotted with celebrity homes, block after block of California Mission Style homes and bungalows were reduced to charred remains. Ornate iron railing wrapped around the smouldering frame of one house Swimming pools were blackened with soot, and sports cars slumped on melted tires.

More than half a dozen schools in the area were either damaged or destroyed, and UCLA has cancelled classes for the week.

Another fire has hit Sylmar, a middle and working-class area on the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley that has been the site of many devastating blazes.

The main fires grew rapidly in distinctly different areas that had two things in common: densely packed streets of homes in places that are choked with vegetation and primed to burn in dry conditions.

Flames moved so quickly that many barely had time to escape. Police sought shelter inside their patrol cars, and residents at a senior living centre were pushed in wheelchairs and hospital beds down a street to safety.

In the race to get away in Pacific Palisades, roadways became impassable when scores of people abandoned their vehicles and set out on foot.

The flames marched toward highly populated and affluent neighbourhoods, including Calabasas and Santa Monica, home to California’s rich and famous.

Mandy Moore, Cary Elwes and Paris Hilton were among the stars who lost homes. Billy Crystal and his wife Janice lost their home of 45 years in the Palisades Fire.

“We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away,” the Crystals wrote in the statement.

In Palisades Village, the public library, two major grocery stores, a pair of banks and several boutiques were destroyed.

“It’s just really weird coming back to somewhere that doesn’t really exist anymore,” said Dylan Vincent, who returned to the neighbourhood to retrieve some items and saw that his elementary school had burned down and that whole blocks had been flattened.

California’s wildfire season is beginning earlier and ending later due to rising temperatures and decreased rainfall tied to climate change, according to recent data. Rains that usually end fire season are often delayed, meaning fires can burn through the winter months, according to the Western Fire Chiefs Association.

Dry winds, including the notorious Santa Anas, have contributed to warmer-than-average temperatures in Southern California, which has not seen more than 0.1 inches (2.5 millimeters) of rain since early May.

The winds increased to 80 mph (129 kph) Wednesday, according to reports received by the National Weather Service. Fire conditions could last through Friday — but wind speeds were expected to be lower on Thursday.

President Joe Biden signed a federal emergency declaration after arriving at a Santa Monica fire station for a briefing with Gov. Gavin Newsom, who dispatched National Guard troops to help.

Several Hollywood studios suspended production, and Universal Studios closed its theme park between Pasadena and Pacific Palisades.

As of early Thursday (January 9, 2025), around 2,50,000 people were without power in southern California, according to the tracking website PowerOutage.us.

Several Southern California landmarks were heavily damaged, including the Reel Inn in Malibu, a seafood restaurant. Owner Teddy Leonard and her husband hope to rebuild.

“When you look at the grand scheme of things, as long as your family is well and everyone’s alive, you’re still winning, right?” she said.

Career Paths For NET Aspirants: Explore Options Amid Changing Requirements

The University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) has long been a gateway for individuals aspiring to teach or conduct research in India’s higher education institutions. Recent proposed changes under the draft UGC regulations for 2025 could redefine this path by making NET optional for assistant professor roles. This shift may create alternative opportunities for NET aspirants and reshape their career trajectories.

Redefining the role of NET for Assistant Professors

While the NET qualification may no longer be mandatory, many universities may still value it as a key credential for assessing teaching and research skills. Others may adopt alternative evaluation methods to ensure academic standards.

    Through Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

The Junior Research Fellowship remains a prestigious option for NET-qualified candidates passionate about in-depth research. From scholarly publications to international collaborations, the JRF provides opportunities to engage in advanced academic exploration.

    Research Roles Across Sectors

Government organisations like CSIR, ICAR, ICMR, and DRDO, along with private think tanks, regularly recruit NET-qualified individuals. These roles focus on research, data analysis, and contributions to policymaking, offering meaningful and impactful careers.

Academic Administration: Beyond Teaching And Research

NET-qualified professionals can transition into higher education administration, taking up roles such as academic coordinators or department heads. These positions involve managing programs, coordinating faculty efforts, and shaping institutional success.

    Digital Education

With the surge in online learning, NET-qualified individuals can explore roles as content developers and subject matter experts. These positions require creating course materials and engaging in virtual classrooms, merging academic expertise with technological innovation.

    Government Jobs Beyond Academia

Public sector roles, especially those requiring subject-specific expertise, often prioritize NET-qualified candidates. Opportunities in educational departments, research organizations, and policy development are viable paths for these individuals.

    International Academic

Srinagar Airport Inaugurates Smoking Zone. Internet Is Unimpressed

The recent inauguration of a smoking zone within the Security Hold Area near Gate 07 at Srinagar International Airport has sparked significant criticism and controversy. On January 6, 2025, the airport’s official social media account shared the announcement with a post that read: “Exciting News! A smoking zone has been inaugurated today (06.01.2025) inside the Security Hold Area near Gate 07 at #SrinagarAirport. Travellers can now enjoy a designated space for a smoke break.”

The announcement faced strong criticism from several users on X, with many questioning the logic behind the new facility. Social media users argued that the addition of a smoking zone undermined public health efforts to discourage smoking and raised concerns about the message it conveyed.

However, after the heavy backlash, Srinagar Airport deleted the post.

A user wrote, “This is great news for non-smokers, as they will no longer have to endure secondhand smoke.”

Another user wrote, “Instead of excitement they should have put warning for smokers.”

“Devil’s advocate here. There will be knuckleheads who will smoke no matter what. So having a designated area means regular people don’t have to put up with those knuckleheads and passive smoking. Then again this is not a real solution. Regulations should be held up more strictly and people who smoke in public should be heavily fined and punished,” the third user wrote.

Indian hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips voiced his frustration, writing, “Day-by-day new India keeps reminding me that this is a majority of stupids for the stupids, by the stupids. Exciting inauguration of a smoking area in an airport. Morons.”

  • 3 Days, 8 Trapped Workers, 1 Body: Here’s What’s Hampering Assam Mine Rescue

3 Days, 8 Trapped Workers, 1 Body: Here’s What’s Hampering Assam Mine Rescue

Several teams from various central and state organisations and all three arms of the Indian Armed Forces – the Army, Navy and Air Force – are involved in some way in the operation to rescue the labourers who have been trapped in a flooded mine in Assam since Monday. Three days on, however, eight labourers are still inside the ‘rat-hole’ mine and the body of the ninth has been recovered.

So, what’s hindering the rescue effort? Here’s what experts had to say:

The water that gushed into the 3 Kilo Coal Quarry in the Dima Hasao district’s Umrangso, rescuers said, is now acidic and murky because it has been mixed with coal. This has made visibility and manoeuvrability very difficult even for the team from the Navy, which includes clearance divers trained in deep-depth diving and recovery operations. The divers from the rescue teams, they said, had to risk their lives to pull out the body that they did on Wednesday.

The murky water, an official said, is making it difficult even to use remote-operated vehicles.

The mine is 310 feet deep and several pumps have been deployed.to get the water out. On Wednesday, an expert team from the Western Coalfields Limited, considered among the best for such rescue operations, was also flown in with a huge submersible pump.

“A five-member team was flown to the accident site in a C-130 Hercules plane on January 8. The team is equipped with a massive submersible pump that can pump out 500 gallons of water per minute at a height of 150 metres, complex cable network, starters and other equipment to help in the rescue operations,” Western Coalfields said in a statement.

Despite all this, the water level in the main shaft is still at nearly 100 feet, making the rescue operation more complicated.

Another aspect that is making looking for the labourers difficult is that the 310-foot deep main shaft leads to four small tunnels in the ‘rat-hole’ mine, each of which branches out, creating a large network. There is no blueprint available for the rescue teams to refer to.

Speaking to NDTV on Wednesday, a worker at the mine, Jalaluddin, had said that the height of some of the tunnels is barely three feet

“There is no room to even stand, and we have to bend and mine for coal. Even when sitting, the roof is just 4-5 inches above our heads,” he said.

Harmeet Singh, Special Director General Of Police, said, “There are channels which are pouring water back into the tunnel. The Navy divers are looking into the tunnels but, as of now, they have not spotted anything.”

Pakistan, Bangladesh Invited For An ‘Undivided India’ Event, Islamabad Confirms

India has invited Pakistan and Bangladesh, among other neighbouring countries to participate in an ‘undivided India’ seminar being organised to mark 150 years of the India Meteorological Department. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative by the government to keep differences aside and celebrate the shared history of the Indian subcontinent in unison.

Invites have been sent to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Besides the subcontinent, invitations have been sent to officials from the Middle East, central and Southwest Asia too.

Pakistan has confirmed its participation, and a confirmation from Bangladesh is awaited, reported news agency Press Trust of India. Should Dhaka confirm, it will be a historic moment. “We wanted officials from all countries which were part of undivided India at the time of IMD’s establishment to be part of the celebrations,” a top official from the weather department said.

Various ministries in the Government of India have contributed to make the event memorable. While the Finance Ministry has decided to release a special and limited-edition Rs 150 commemorative coin to mark the special occasion, the Home Ministry has given clearance for a special tableaux on Republic Day marking the weather department’s 150 years.

    A BRIEF HISTORY

The India Meteorological Department was established on January 15, 1875. However, weather observatories had been set up much earlier. The first meteorological observatories were established by the British East India Company. The Calcutta Observatory started in 1785, the Madras Observatory in 1796 and the Bombay Observatory in 1826. Many more were set up in the early 19th century, peppered across the Indian subcontinent.

The IMD came into existence in 1875 after a cyclone ravaged Calcutta in 1864, followed by two deadly monsoon failures in 1866 and 1871 which led to famines across Bengal. This was when it was decided by the administration under the British Raj that record-keeping and data analysis was required. So the collection and analysis of meteorological observations started under one roof – an organisation named India Meteorological Department.

Since its inception in 1875, IMD was headquartered in Calcutta. In 1905 it was moved to Shimla, and then to Pune in 1928, and eventually to New Delhi in 1944, where it has remained since.

Over the years IMD went from humble beginnings to becoming a leading weather forecaster for Asia. Since independence in 1947, IMD has made significant advancements in weather sciences, communication, and scientific innovation.

During the era of the telegram, IMD used to send major weather updates and warnings by way of telegram. But it went on pioneer weather communication by inaugurating one of the first message-switching computers in the world for global data exchange. It also acquired one of the earliest electronic computers for climate research.

When India’s space agency ISRO established itself, the weather department was one of the first to collaborate with it. India became the first developing country to launch its own geostationary satellite, INSAT, for round-the-clock weather monitoring and cyclone alerts.

  • “Will There Be A Solution Or…”: Bombay High Court On Air Pollution

“Will There Be A Solution Or…”: Bombay High Court On Air Pollution

The Bombay High Court on Thursday wondered if there would be a solution for air pollution in the city or if citizens have to continue seeing haze each year after Diwali.

It also suggested that bakeries should be prohibited from using wood and charcoal and batted for CNG and electric cars.

A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Girish Kulkarni said while all authorities are broadly aware of the problems and the reasons behind Mumbai’s depleting Air Quality Index (AQI), the solution and measures to be taken need to be arrived at immediately.

The bench had in 2023 taken suo moto (on its own) cognisance of the poor air quality in the city and state.

On Thursday, the court noted that each year the situation is the same after Diwali.

“What is the solution in such situations? All this starts every year after Diwali. Broadly we know the problems and the causes… so now what is the solution? Or do we continue to see this haze every year all over Mumbai? There is such low visibility on some days,” the bench said.

The court noted that in 2023 it had permitted the bursting of firecrackers only for a few hours daily during the Diwali festival but its directive was not implemented at all.

“We saw firecrackers being burst even up to 1 am in the morning despite our orders. The implementing agencies did not follow our orders at all,” it said.

The court said it was sorry to note that no proactive measures have been taken by the authorities.

“Only when the court passes orders, something is done. Everyone is affected. You (authorities) clearly need to take more drastic measures. When will the pollution levels come down? Unless something drastic is done the situation won’t come under control,” the court said.

The bench pointed out to the pollution caused due to increasing number of vehicles on the road and also bakeries across the city using wood and coal to make their products.

The court said bakeries should be now prohibited from using wood or coal and switch to gas.

It added that people should be encouraged to use CNG or electric cars instead of the ones running on petrol or diesel.

The court also noted that a significant portion of pollution is caused by construction in the city and was not appreciative of the stand taken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) that a choice has to be made between development and clean air.

Senior counsel Milind Sathe, appearing for the BMC, said there was nothing shocking or horrifying in the civic body’s stance.

“We cannot stop development but we are taking mitigating action,” Sathe said.

The court then said the action has not abated the situation and more measures need to be taken.

The HC said it would pass a detailed order directing the government and other authorities to take certain measures to address the issue.

“Is It Equality?”: Bengaluru Man’s Post Questioning Free Bus Service For Women Sparks Debate

A Bengaluru man has ignited debate on social media with his post questioning the fairness and sustainability of the state’s free bus service for women. Taking to X, Kiran Kumar shared his experience of taking an early Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus from Bengaluru to Mysuru, which cost him Rs 210. In his post, he called the journey “comfortable”, however, he also pointed out the disparity in the fare distribution.

“I took an early morning bus to Mysuru, from Bengaluru. Rs 210 fare. Comfortable KSRTC bus and a world class highway for fast travel. But I got a few thoughts. 1) Nearly 30 of the 50 passengers were women. Just show Aadhar and travel free. Is this fair? Is it equality? 2) 20 men are paying for the entire bus. Is that fair? 3) Saw an old man struggling to find notes to pay, while a well off young woman on video call next to him, travels free. Is that fair?” said Mr Kumar.

Further, in his post, the X user asked why, if the state had a surplus income, the free bus service couldn’t be expanded to include all passengers. “Why not make it free for these 20 men as well?” he proposed, suggesting a universal free bus service similar to an airport shuttle.

“All over the world, subsidy and welfare is given to those who can’t afford. Here, we have women from two rich cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru, traveling free just because it is available. Is it sustainable? 6) Couldn’t the same freebie money be used for garbage clearance, pothole fixing in cities, providing water to farmers? Many more thoughts. But realized that we have entered the vicious cycle of freebies for votes. Tough to get out of it in the near future,” Mr Kumar said.

Mr Kumar shared the post on Wednesday. Since then, it has accumulated more than 1 million views. In the comments section, while some users agreed with Mr Kumar’s sentiments, others defended the policy as an essential step towards gender equality.

“For approximately 300,000 years since the dawn of humankind, women were largely confined to the home, tasked with raising children, caring for elders, and cooking, while men enjoyed the freedom to roam and explore. Was this fair?” wrote one user.

“we have so much diversity that any rule cannot be fair to all at any point in time. Nothing stops women who are capable to pay, but to set up a complex system to decide who should pay and who shouldn’t will not work. There is still so much disparity in workforce,” said another.

However, one user agreed with Mr Kumar saying, “Many of these ladies would have otherwise driven their cars or booked an ola outstation or cab to go to Mysore. Now they go from free on taxpayers money. I am against freebies for anyone – male or female.”

Another said, “Free bus travel should be for the poor, irrespective of men or women, and not for all. That makes sense.”

“At best, they could make it a 25% or 50% concession for intercity travel if they want to make it attractive during elections,” one user suggested.

  • How UGC Plans To Reshape Academic Careers By Making National Eligibility Test Optional

How UGC Plans To Reshape Academic Careers By Making National Eligibility Test Optional

The recent release of the draft UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment & Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges) Regulations, 2025, by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, marks a significant shift in the higher education sector. These proposed reforms promise to transform recruitment and promotion standards for academic staff, while potentially impacting the quality of education, academic standards, and career opportunities for aspiring professors.

Key Highlights Of Draft UGC Regulations 2025

    Flexibility In Teaching Careers

The draft regulations provide universities with greater flexibility in appointing and promoting teachers. Candidates who have qualified in NET/SET may now pursue teaching careers in subjects different from their academic background, with PhD specialisation being given priority.

    Inclusion And Holistic Evaluation

One of the standout features of the regulations is their focus on inclusivity and holistic evaluation. The reforms aim to reduce the over-reliance on scores, instead prioritising “notable contributions” from candidates, including those from arts, sports, and traditional disciplines. Additionally, the provisions support accomplished sportspersons and individuals with disabilities in entering the academic profession.

Promotion Of Indian Languages And Enhanced Governance

The regulations encourage the use of Indian languages in academic work and degree programmes. Furthermore, the draft seeks to enhance the governance of higher education institutions, proposing new eligibility criteria and transparency in the selection process for Vice-Chancellors.

Streamlined Promotion Process And Focus On Professional Development

A key change is the simplification of the promotion process, with a stronger emphasis on teaching, research output, and overall academic contributions. The regulations also promote continuous learning and skill enhancement for teachers through faculty development programmes.

    Direct Recruitment And Minimum Qualifications

Under the new guidelines, direct recruitment for academic posts like Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor will be based on merit, through an all-India advertisement and a selection committee. The minimum qualifications for Assistant Professor roles include a postgraduate degree (with at least 55% marks) and a PhD Candidates may also apply with qualifications from the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET).

Moreover, candidates who have pursued a PhD in a subject different from their undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications may still be eligible for teaching roles in the relevant discipline, subject to university approval.

    Assistant Professor (Academic Level 10):

A UG degree (NCrF Level 6) with at least 75% marks or a PG degree (NCrF Level 6.5) with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) and a PhD Degree (NCrF Level 8).

    Or

A PG degree (NCrF Level 6.5) with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) and qualification in the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, CSIR, ICAR etc. or a similar test like SLET/SET

    or

A PG degree (NCrF Level 7; e.g. M.E., M. Tech.,) with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade).

    Impact on Aspiring Professors

While these proposed changes may create more flexible opportunities for aspiring professors, they may also reduce the necessity of the National Eligibility Test (NET) as a compulsory requirement for Assistant Professor positions. This change could affect how academic institutions assess the eligibility and quality of faculty candidates, potentially influencing the academic standards and the path to a teaching career.

The draft UGC regulations represent a significant shift in higher education recruitment practices, reflecting a broader move towards inclusivity, flexibility, and an expanded definition of merit in academia. However, the full impact on the education system will depend on the feedback received during the consultation period and the final implementation of these guidelines.

  • How China Is Using Its Rice Cookers And Dish Washers To Save The Economy

How China Is Using Its Rice Cookers And Dish Washers To Save The Economy

China is expanding its consumer trade-in scheme to revive demand in the sluggish household sector. The move includes adding more home appliances to the list of products eligible for trade-in and offering subsidies for digital goods. Microwave ovens, water purifiers, dish-washing machines, and rice cookers are among the new additions to the scheme.

Consumers who trade in old goods will receive subsidies of 15-20%. Cellphones, tablet computers, smart watches, and bracelets under 6,000 yuan will also be eligible for a 15% subsidy. The government has allocated 81 billion yuan ($11 billion) for the program in 2025.

The trade-in scheme was initially launched last March, with a budget of 150 billion yuan funded through special government bonds. The program was used by 36 million consumers to buy 240 billion yuan worth of home appliances, driving 920 billion yuan of car sales.

China’s top economic planning body has said the schemes have already produced “visible effects” in boosting consumer spending. However, some economists have questioned whether the schemes will be enough to significantly increase consumer demand.

“The downside of such a policy is you are just pulling forward future demand,” Hui Shan, chief China economist at Goldman Sachs said. “If I’m going to replace my air conditioner once every 10 years, [you’re] pulling the next few years of demand into now.”

This trade-in scheme is also reminiscent of former US president Barack Obama’s “cash for clunkers” initiative, through which consumers could trade in old cars for new ones, post the 2008 global financial crisis.

However, Frederic Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC, said that such trade-in programmes are helpful only for a short-term goal and said that China would need more policies that would aid consumption for a sustainable change.

The expansion of the trade-in scheme comes as China faces challenges such as weak consumer demand and a deepening property crisis. In December, a key meeting of China’s leaders stressed the need for “vigorous” efforts to boost consumer spending. China is due to announce its 2024 economic growth figures next week, which Beijing expects to be around 5%.
