Landlords ripping off LA fire victims, says Selling Sunset star

Landlords have been illegally raising prices due to the Los Angeles wildfires, says Selling Sunset star Jason Oppenheim.

The LA property mogul, who owns the luxury real estate brokerage at the centre of the Netflix reality show, said one client had been asked for thousands over the original asking price to rent a home – despite California’s anti “price gouging” laws.

It comes as LA officials warned anyone caught “taking advantage” of the disaster by scamming or burgling wildfire victims would be prosecuted.

Thousands of people have lost homes in LA and displaced victims say they are facing sky-high rental prices and hotel fees.

Oppenheim said his business was offering its services for free and had received dozens of calls from people who had lost homes.

Speaking on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, he described sending a client to visit a property where the landlord had previously been asking for $13,000 per month in rent.

“[My client] offered $20,000 a month and he offered to pay six months upfront and the landlord said ‘I want $23,000’,” he said.

“There are price gouging laws in California, they’re just being ignored right now, and this isn’t the time to be taking advantage of situations.”

The 47-year-old added that the disaster had been “emotional for everyone”.

He said: “Everyone has tears in their eyes all day long, literally from the smoke but also just because it’s emotional to see people struggling like this.”

California authorities have warned businesses against illegally hiking the price of items more than 10% above their pre-disaster cost.

On Saturday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta also said he had seen landlords raising prices illegally.

“You cannot do it. It is a crime punishable by up to a year in jail and fines,” he said.

“This is California law [and] it’s in place to protect those suffering from a tragedy.”

    ‘A lot of scams’

Price gouging is just one example of the criminality that has emerged amid the disaster, which has killed at least 16 people.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna warned those thinking of committing burglary or “white collar crime or a scam” that police and prosecutors were watching.

Meanwhile LA police chief Jim McDonnell said “people will go to all ends to be able to do what it is they want to do to exploit the victims of this tragedy”.

Mr McDonnell said there “are a lot of scams” and warned those who want to help to donate “with caution”.

He encouraged people to conduct careful research to find reputable organisations, recommending using resources such as Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau, and urged residents to report fraud.

“Together we can prevent further harm and protect the generosity of our community,” he said.

Meanwhile Mr Luna, the county sheriff, said there had so far been approximately 29 arrests amid the fires, including a man posing as a firefighter to burgle a home.

He said police were “eager to prosecute” anyone who had “taken advantage of our residents during this very difficult time” and specifically warned against “white collar” scams.

On Saturday, police in LA said the number of arrests for looting was “continuously growing”.

Yet despite the malfeasance of some, LA mayor Karen Bass said more than 13,000 people have donated over $6m (£4.9m) to California’s Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund since the fires began on Tuesday.

An off-duty police officer has died after she was struck by a lorry while helping at the scene of an earlier crash.

PC Rosie Prior, 45, had stopped to help Ryan Welford, 41, from Knaresborough, and was standing on the verge of the A19 at Bagby in North Yorkshire, when they were hit by a lorry at 08:55 GMT on Saturday.

They died at the scene. A teenage boy who was a passenger in Mr Welford’s car is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Mr Welford’s family said he was a “hard-working and loving father, husband, son and brother”.

“He will be greatly missed by his family and friends,” they said.

Ms Prior had joined North Yorkshire Police more than two years ago because “she wanted to help people,” Mr Forber said.

“Rosie epitomises the very best of British policing, she put the safety of others before her own safety,” he said.

“Yesterday morning, she wasn’t on duty on a shift, she was off duty, and she came across the road traffic collision on the A19 and she stopped to help.

“She got out and like many police officers up and down the country put herself on duty.”

He said his thoughts were with the family of Mr Welford and that it was a “deeply traumatic and heart-breaking event for everyone involved”.

Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said the deaths of Ms Prior and Mr Welford were a “profound tragedy”.

“This brave officer’s passing serves as a reminder of the risks that our dedicated police officers face every single day in the line of duty,” she said.

The Bishop of Kirkstall, the Right Reverend Arun Arora, paid tribute to Ms Prior and Mr Welford, saying their friends and families were in his thoughts.

He told BBC Radio York: “They will be in our prayers and our condolences to them at this time.”

The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and deputy mayor of policing, fire and crime said they were “devastated” by the deaths of Ms Prior and Mr Welford.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and Jo Coles, deputy mayor, said in a joint statement: “Our hearts are broken for them and their families.

“Rosie’s commitment to serving the public, even when off duty, shows she was the very best of us.”

“It is with immense grief and sorrow that the Police Federation of England and Wales offers its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the two people, including PC Rosie Prior, who were killed in a tragic collision on A19,” she said.

Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton Kevin Hollinrake said he would be “working with the relevant authorities to understand how this tragedy occurred and to explore what steps can be taken to prevent such incidents in the future”.

“The safety of our roads and those who serve on them is a priority, and we must do everything possible to prevent further loss of life.”

North Yorkshire Police issued an appeal for witnesses and urged motorists with dashcam footage to get in touch.

The staff member, aged in her 50s, was attacked at Royal Oldham Hospital

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a nurse was seriously injured in a stabbing at a hospital.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was left with life-changing injuries in the attack at Royal Oldham Hospital’s A&E department at about 23:30 GMT on Saturday.

Greater Manchester Police said officers believe a member of the public attacked her with a sharp instrument which was not a knife. She remains in hospital for treatment.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and remains in police custody.

Det Sgt Craig Roters appealed for information, adding: “We know that news of this nature will come as a shock.

“The local community can expect to see an increase in police presence while we carry out enquiries, but they are also there to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have.”

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said on X nurses “should be able to care for patients without fear of violence”.

His post added: “My thoughts are with the nurse and her loved ones following this horrific attack at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

“Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence.

“We’re in touch with the Trust and will update further as we can.”

    ‘Hospital remains open’

Heather Caudle, the chief nursing officer at Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust – which covers Oldham – said staff were “incredibly shocked and saddened by last night’s incident and our focus is on supporting the colleague involved and their family”.

She added: “Our thoughts are also with colleagues and patients who were there at the time of the incident and for whom this has been distressing and frightening.”

She said they were working with police and all services at the hospital would remain open.

In a social media post, Oldham West MP Jim McMahon, who is also a minister for local government, expressed his shock at what he described as “a senseless attack”.

He said his thoughts were with the staff member, her family and friends and wished her a full recovery.

Rahul Easwar seeks pre-arrest bail from Kerala High Court

Activist Rahul Easwar on Sunday sought anticipatory bail from Kerala High Court, apprehending arrest on allegations of cyber harassment by a woman actor who had recently filed a complaint against Boby Chemmannur alleging that he made sexually coloured remarks about her on social media.

No case had been registered against Mr. Easwar so far, although the actor lodged a complaint against him with the Ernakulam Central police. Mr. Easwar is learnt to have sought anticipatory bail on the concern that he might be included as a co-accused in the case registered against Mr. Chemmannur, who was arrested and remanded.

In his petition, Mr. Easwar termed that his remarks were constructive criticism, did not contain slanderous language, and that his right to criticise the actor was protected under fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. He added that his comments were solely focused on her choice of attire, which he argued could attract attention, particularly from the younger generation. Mr. Easwar further contended that he had specifically stated through news channel discussions that Mr. Chemmannur should apologise to the actor for his remarks.

Farmers urge Chandrababu Naidu to stop construction of ethanol factory in village

Farmers from Arugolanu, a village in Bapulapadu mandal in Krishna district, and human rights activists met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday (January 11), seeking his intervention to stop the construction of an ethanol factory in the village.

    M. Venkata Ratnam and K. Raghava Rao, who represented the farmers, and G. Rohith from the Human Rights Forum (HRF) met Mr. Chandrababu Naidu at the TDP central office in Mangalagiri to draw his attention to the issue.

In a petition, they explained that the factory, coming up on 15 acres and having a production capacity of 200 kilo litre per day (KLPD), is located close to their fields and just about 200 metres from the Veeravalli Channel 1 of the Eluru Canal.

As per the Environment Clearance (EC), dated November 2, 2022, the factory is permitted to draw 800 KLPD from the canal for its everyday requirements. The farmers and activists, however, pointed out that the canal, which gets water from the Prakasam Barrage, has lean flows for 3-4 months a year.

Moreover, the canal does not have any flow in the months of March, May and June, said the farmers, quoting from information they received about flows in Veeravalli Channel through a Right to Information (RTI) Act application. Given the situation, “how can the factory meet its daily requirements of 800 KL[P]D?” they asked in the petition.

Data about the allocation of water (in tmcft) made for irrigation and non-irrigation purposes, including drinking and industrial needs, from the Veeravalli Channel shows that in 2019-2020, 0.43 tmcft was set aside for irrigation and 0.01 tmcft for both drinking and industrial purposes.

The factory may require anywhere between 4 and 8 litre of water for every 1 litre of ethanol. Given its production capacity per day, which is 2,00,000 litres of ethanol, the total water requirement per day would touch 16,00,000 litres, which would be around 0.02602 tmcft. The factory did not mention these points in the environmental clearance, the petitioners said.

Ethanol factories are marked under ‘red category’, which means they need to maintain a certain distance from habitations. However, a school is located within a kilometre of the factory, they said.

The farmers solely depend on the Veeravalli Channel for their irrigation as the groundwater is salty, the farmers and Mr. Rohith explained to the Chief Minister, requesting him to look into the matter and take necessary steps to stop the construction of the factory.

  • Sankranti spirit engulfs Hyderabad

    Sankranti spirit engulfs Hyderabad

With only one day left for Sankranti, commuters are facing long travel hours owing to massive jams on national highways and arterial roads criss-crossing the city. The festive energy was in full swing in Hyderabad on Sunday.

People flocked to sweet shops and kite stalls, and prominent transit points, including Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), Lakdi-ka-pul, Mehdipatnam, Ameerpet and Uppal, were choc-a-block with passengers, who were seen elbowing out others to find their way to their buses. The roads connecting these locations turned deep red on Google Maps and experienced bumper-to-bumper traffic.

    B. Akhil, 23, a software engineer working at Gachibowli missed the bus to his hometown Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh despite starting considerably earlier than the scheduled departure.

“Though the pickup point was only four kilometres from my place, I left 45 minutes before the bus was scheduled to depart and still failed to make it on time. I had to ask the driver to leave without me. I then took the Metro to Ameerpet and managed to get there in 30 minutes, while the bus only arrived an hour later. I finally boarded the bus at 11:45 p.m.,” Akhil shared.

Kireeti Prapulla, 23, also a software employee at Gachibowli had to take car sharing service to reach his native Rajahmundry, which cost him ₹4,000. “No other option was feasible. Buses and trains were booked out and the roads to reach them were jam-packed. We started around 10.30 p.m. and took the Outer Ring Road (ORR) instead of travelling through the city. Except for a line at the toll plaza, the ride was smooth,” Kireeti said.

Unlike the key transit points, the usually-packed city roads remained relatively empty as Sankranti holidays coincided with the weekend. “The morning was nostalgic for me and my father as it took us less than 50 minutes to cover 30 kilometres from Nacharam to Kondapur, which is usually a 1.5-hour drive. However, I spent over 20 minutes just to cover 200 metres at JBS which was filled with buses,” said K. Sushil, 27, a private employee.

    Low traffic

“There was less traffic across the city due to several factors, including the outflux of Andhra natives due to Sankranti and the long weekend. Apart from areas around Parade Grounds due to the kite festival, we expect the traffic to be smooth,” said N. Ashok Kumar, DCP Traffic-II Hyderabad. Around 800 traffic police officials (45-50% of the total workforce) are deployed at any given time for traffic management and enforcement, he added.

Markets, mainly across the heavily residential Secunderabad, were decked up with flowers, vegetables, kites and decorative items. Demand was heavy for pumpkin, vegetables and coconuts during the festive weekend.

  • Upset Over Being Replaced From His Seat, Delhi MLA Makes It To 3rd BJP List

Upset Over Being Replaced From His Seat, Delhi MLA Makes It To 3rd BJP List

BJP rushed to placate the outgoing MLA from Karawal Nagar after the ticket from his current seat was given to Kapil Mishra. Mohan Singh Bisht was then given a ticket from Mustafabad in the third list of candidates released on Sunday, ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly election.

Mr Bisht, who has won all except one assembly election from Karawal Nagar since 1998, had earlier said, “The BJP thinks they will field anyone and he will win. This is a big mistake. You have challenged the ‘samaj’ (his Uttarakhandi community), not Mohan Singh Bisht. The BJP will lose at least 8-10 seats because of this decision, including Karawal Nagar, Burari, Mustafabad and Gokalpuri.”

Later, Mr Bisht expressed confidence that he would win the Mustafabad seat for the BJP. “I met the national president and things were ironed out. I have assured that I will contest from Mustafabad and win the seat for the party,” Bisht told PTI. The MLA said he and the BJP had considerable support in Mustafabad and he has already attended two public meetings there.

Another protest at the Delhi BJP office voiced resentment over the candidate fielded from Tughlakabad. “Vikram Bidhuri Tum Sangharsh Karo; Modi Se Bair Nahi, Rohtas Teri Khair Nahi,” the protesters, including mostly youngsters, chanted as the party leaders tried to pacify them. In the second list of BJP candidates, Rohtas Bidhuri was fielded from the Tughlakabad seat.

A similar protest was also held by some party workers outside the Delhi BJP office against Mehrauli candidate Gajainder Yadav after the announcement of the first list of candidates earlier this month.

Mr Bisht is the only candidate announced as part of the third list of BJP candidates for the Delhi polls. In the first and second lists, 29 candidates each were announced. So far, the BJP has announced 59 candidates.

Elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly are scheduled on February 5, the counting of votes for which will be held on February 8. The elections will see the Aam Aadmi Party looking to retain power for the third consecutive term, despite many of its leaders being tainted by various cases. The BJP, out of power in Delhi since 1998, is making all-out efforts to return to the helm.

  • Delhi Air Quality: GRAP 3 restrictions revoked, children likely to return to schools

Image Source : PTI Air quality improves in Delhi, following a spell of rains

Delhi Air Quality: The air quality in Delhi improved on Sunday following a spell of rain in the national capital, prompting the Centre’s panel on Delhi-NCR’s air quality to revoke the Stage-III curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). After the rain, Delhi witnessed a drop in air pollution levels due to favourable meteorological conditions.

Light rainfall in and around Delhi triggered by a Western Disturbance — weather systems that originate in the Mediterranean region and bring winter rain and snow to northwest India — significantly improved the city’s air quality.  The national capital’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 278 at 4 PM on Sunday, 72 points below the 350-mark threshold for the implementation of Stage-III curbs, which include a ban on non-essential construction work.

    Schools may stop online classes

The management of Delhi’s schools that were running on hybrid mode now may take a call to end the online classes. Parents and students have the option to choose online education wherever available. Classes up to grade V are required to shift to hybrid mode under Stage 3.

“Owing to a WD (Western Disturbance) on 11th-12th January 2025, there were rains around Delhi-NCR and the AQI of Delhi has shown a significant improvement owing to the favourable meteorological conditions. The AQI of Delhi has been recorded as 278 at 4:00 PM today which is 72 points below the 350 mark to implement the Stage-III as per the extant directives of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. Further, the forecast by 2 | IMD predicts another WD (Western Disturbance) in the region around 14th-15th January 2025,” a statement released by the authorities read.

“The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and adjoining areas, in pursuance of the Hon’ble Supreme Court directions, issued a comprehensively Revised schedule of GRA vide its order dated 13.12.2024 for implementation with immediate effect by all concerned (available on CAQM website i.e., caqm.nic.in),” it added.

Under Stage 3, the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel cars (4-wheelers) is restricted in Delhi and nearby NCR districts. Persons with disabilities are exempt. Stage 3 also bans non-essential diesel-operated medium goods vehicles with BS-IV or older standards in Delhi.

During winters, the Delhi-NCR region enforces restrictions under GRAP, which categorizes air quality into four stages – Stage I (Poor, AQI 201-300), Stage II (Very Poor, AQI 301-400), Stage III (Severe, AQI 401-450), and Stage IV (Severe Plus, AQI above 450).

Unfavourable meteorological conditions, combined with vehicle emissions, paddy-straw burning, firecrackers, and other local pollution sources, lead to hazardous air quality levels in Delhi-NCR during winters.

NEW DELHI: Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been fasting for 48 days, wrote a letter to various religious leaders, requesting them to ask the Central government to fulfil farmers’ demands, legal guarantee to minimum support price for crops.
Since November 26 last year, Dallewal, who serves as the convener of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), has been observing hunger strike at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana. He has consistently declined any medical assistance and his health has been continuosly deteriorating.
The letter mentioned the ongoing farmers’ protests at Khanauri and Shambhu border points over various demands during the past 11 months.
It mentioned the death of farmer Subhkaran Singh and injuries sustained by others during police interventions against their protest.
The letter also referenced a recent parliamentary panel’s recommendation for legal guarantee to MSP, stating that such a measure would “greatly benefit the farmers, rural economy and the country.”
The implementation of MSP guarantee legislation would enhance farmers’ purchasing capacity, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth, according to farmer representatives.
The farmers mentioned that letters were sent to the Prime Minister, Vice President and Supreme Court justices over the previous 48 days, “but no one paid any attention to our letter nor responded to it.”
“History is a witness to the fact that whenever a government goes astray from the right path, saints and religious leaders have worked to bring the government to the right path.
“We request you to ask the present government to fulfill promises made to farmers so that the farmers can get their rights and suicides of farmers can be stopped,” it said.
Since February 13, farmers affiliated with SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have established protest camps at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana, following security forces’ prevention of their planned march to Delhi.

The accused was produced before court on Sunday and sent to jail, the officer said.

  • Why Laurene Powell Jobs was not allowed to touch Kashi Vishwanath Shivling? Swami Kailashanand Giri explains

Swami Kailashanand Giri clarified lingering speculation around the visit, calling Powell Jobs “a daughter” and highlighting her deep respect for Indian spirituality.

Laurene Powell Jobs, philanthropist and wife of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, visited the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi on Saturday, accompanied by spiritual leader Swami Kailashanand Giri of Niranjani Akhara. The visit, marked by reverence and adherence to Indian traditions, also included prayers for the smooth completion of the upcoming Maha Kumbh.
Speaking to reporters outside the temple, Swami Kailashanand Giri clarified lingering speculation around the visit, calling Powell Jobs “a daughter” and highlighting her deep respect for Indian spirituality. “She is very religious and spiritual,” he said. “She wants to learn about our traditions and respects me as a father and Guru. Indian traditions are being accepted by the world.”
He also addressed the temple’s strict protocols, noting that Powell Jobs followed all customs. “Non-Hindus cannot touch the Shivling, and she saw it from outside. Traditions must be maintained,” he explained, adding that she would participate in the Maha Kumbh, including taking a sacred dip in the Ganga.
A global connection to Indian spirituality
Swami Kailashanand Giri also revealed that the Akhara is preparing to appoint its first Mahamandaleshwar from the USA, Maharshi Vyasanand. The new leader expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am honored to represent the Shankaracharya Parampara to the world.”
The temple visit, which included rituals and offerings, underscored the increasing global appeal of Indian spiritual traditions. “Today, we prayed to Mahadev for the successful completion of the Maha Kumbh,” the Maharaj added.
Maha Kumbh: A global gathering of faith
The Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, is set to host over 45 crore devotees in Prayagraj. Key bathing dates include January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of India’s 12 Jyotirlingas, has seen an exponential rise in devotees since the inauguration of Kashi Vishwanath Dham in December 2021. Powell Jobs’ visit reflects the growing global resonance of this sacred site.
Swami Kailashanand’s remarks captured the significance of the moment: “Indian spirituality is reaching every corner of the world, and this visit is a testament to that truth.”

  • 30-Year-Old Blind Woman Dies After Being Pushed In Fire Over Dowry In UP: Cops

30-Year-Old Blind Woman Dies After Being Pushed In Fire Over Dowry In UP: Cops

A 30-year-old blind woman died of burn injuries after she was allegedly pushed by her husband into a fire for dowry last month, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred in Sarai Mishrani village in Gopiganj area, where Sushma, sustained severe burns last month and died on Saturday, police sources said.

Based on a complaint by her father, Ram Murat Gautam, an FIR was lodged against her husband, Raju Gautam, under sections 304B (dowry death), 498A (cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Efforts are underway to catch the accused, who is on the run, Circle Officer Chaman Singh Chawda said.

He said Sushma, from Kaudhar village in Suriyawan, was married to Raju Gautam (35) under the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme on January 30, 2024.

Her family alleged that Raju, who had been married three times before and has two daughters from his previous marriages, was demanding cash and a motorcycle as dowry.

According to the FIR on December 13, 2024, Raju allegedly had his daughters light a bonfire and then pushed Sushma into it after an argument.

Despite her critical injuries, Raju did not seek medical help and later abandoned her at her sister’s home in Janaki Nagar, Prayagraj, on December 15, 2024.

Sushma’s family took her to multiple hospitals for treatment, but her condition did not improve. On Saturday, they brought her to the Gopiganj Community Health Centre, where she died during treatment.

Chawda said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and an investigation is underway.

  • Shark Attack Survivor Crowdfunds For Prosthetic Hand After Insurance Company Refused To Pay

Shark Attack Survivor Crowdfunds For Prosthetic Hand After Insurance Company Refused To Pay

A Virginia woman who lost her hand in a shark attack in Florida is crowdfunding for a prosthetic after her insurance denied coverage. Elisabeth Foley, 45, from Ashland, was critically injured in the June 7th attack.

“All of a sudden I looked behind me and saw this thing that looked like a torpedo,” Foley told Boston 25. She spent years in Massachusetts before moving to Virginia. “It was a huge mass.”

She attempted to kick at the shark, and that’s when she first felt the pain-the shark had attacked her lower leg, the Independent reported.

Foley recalled reading about punching a shark to drive it away. As she began swinging, the shark dragged her underwater, and she feared for her life.

When she resurfaced, she realised her hand was gone.

The attack left Foley requiring extensive medical care, including the amputation of her left mid-forearm and treatment for injuries to her midsection. She spent 60 days in the hospital before finally returning home two months later.

Despite her recovery, Foley continues to endure the aftermath of the attack. She has been advised to undergo multiple surgeries to repair nerve damage and reconstructive procedures.

Now, medical experts recommend a myoelectric prosthetic hand-an advanced device that would enable her to perform more specialized tasks and regain greater functionality.

Foley was set to receive her new prosthetic hand on Christmas Eve, but her insurance company reportedly refused to cover the costs, claiming the device was not medically necessary. The specific insurance provider was not disclosed.

“It felt like a punch in the gut because I just want to get back to normal,” Foley told NBC Boston.

Determined to move forward, Foley began fundraising and launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $73,000 to cover the cost of the prosthesis. As of Thursday, the campaign had reached 81% of its goal, with over $59,260 raised.

“Elisabeth’s medical team has strongly recommended a myoelectric prosthetic hand, a specialized device that is powered by the residual muscles in the arm sending signals to the device which causes the prosthetic wrist and hand to perform specialized tasks,” the page read.

“Without this hand, Elisabeth faces a future marked by limited skills, stunted mobility and a diminished quality of life.”

  • No BJP Leader Asked Ramesh Bidhuri To Apologise To Me Or Priyanka Gandhi: Atishi

No BJP Leader Asked Ramesh Bidhuri To Apologise To Me Or Priyanka Gandhi: Atishi

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who is seeking re-election from Kalkaji in next month’s Assembly elections, on Sunday hit out at her rival BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri for his alleged remarks on her family made last week.

In an interview with PTI Videos, Atishi also claimed that her crowd-funding initiative launched on Sunday morning generated Rs 17 lakh in donations within just 10 hours.

Atishi, who defeated BJP’s Dharambir Singh in 2020, said she will proceed to file her nomination for the February 5 polls at the district magistrate’s office after praying at the Kalkaji temple and at a gurdwara.

On her BJP rival’s recent remarks, Atishi said, “Bidhuri has shown his character. Within 24 hours of getting a ticket, he made an indecent comment on Priyanka Gandhi. In the next 24 hours, he abused me and my family from Prime Minister Modi’s stage at a rally.” At a ‘Parivaratan’ rally of the BJP in Rohini last week, Bidhuri targeted Atishi for dropping her surname and went on to say that she “changed her father”.

“Not a single BJP leader has said that Bidhuri was wrong, or asked him to apologise to Pryanka Gandhi or me (for his remarks),” Atishi said.

“This means the BJP supports Bidhuri’s indecent language and the abuses he hurled at women. Had they not, they would have said he was wrong and asked him to apologise to Priayanka Gandhi and me. But they did not do so,” she added.

Before targeting Atishi, Bidhuri had stoked a controversy by claiming that he would make roads which are like Congress leader “Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks” in his constituency, a comment for which he later expressed regret.

Atishi, who launched her crowd-funding campaign to contest the polls on Sunday, called the initiative an “example of honesty”.

“I need Rs 40 lakh to contest the polls which is .0005 per cent of the budget of our government. AAP is a party that never earned even a single penny dishonestly and that is why we still seek donations from the people to fight the elections,” she said.

The campaign launched at 10 am raised Rs 17 lakh by 8 pm in the form of small donations worth Rs 100 and similar amounts, which show the donors were commoners wishing to support AAP, she claimed.

“I hope the target will be met in coming days,” she said.

Amid BJP’s claims that AAP was helping illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas staying in Delhi to become voters to use them as vote banks, Atishi hit back by questioning the security on the borders under the BJP-led Central government.

“Amit Shah should tell from where these Bangladeshis and Rohingyas came. He is responsible for border security and stopping infiltration through the India-Bangladesh borders,” she said.

“How did the Rohingyas reach Delhi? What does it speak of the law and order and security arrangements if they managed to reach Delhi after crossing the borders and passing through many states. If Rohingyas have reached Delhi, only the BJP is responsible for it,” Atishi said.

Talking about her re-election bid from Kalkaji, she said the constituency was her “Karmbhumi” for the last five years where people considered her as their own “daughter and sister”.

Expressing hopes of getting the wholehearted support of the voters this time as well, Atishi said she developed the constituency by treating its residents like her own family.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly will go to polls on February 5. The results will be out on February 8.

  • EU foreign ministers to tackle Syria sanctions relief at end of month

EU foreign ministers to tackle Syria sanctions relief at end of month

European foreign ministers will meet at the end of January to discuss the lifting of sanctions on Syria, the EU foreign policy chief said on Sunday (January 12, 2025) in Riyadh ahead of a meeting of top Middle Eastern and Western diplomats and Syria’s new foreign minister.

Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, said the foreign ministers would convene in Brussels on Jan. 27 in an effort to decide how the 27-nation bloc would relax sanctions on Syria.

After 13 years of civil war, Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in a lightning offensive by insurgent forces led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) a month ago. The group has since set up a caretaker government in Damascus.

Any European decision to ease sanctions would be conditional on the new Syrian administration’s approach to governing, which must include “different groups” and women and “no radicalisation”, Ms. Kallas said, without elaborating.

“If we see the developments going to the right direction, we are ready to do the next steps…If we see that it’s not going to the right direction, then we can also move back on this.”

Sunday’s (January 12, 2025) conference, the first such meeting of Western and regional leaders hosted by regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia since Assad’s ouster, comes as Damascus urges the West to lift sanctions to help international funding flow more freely.

The U.S., Britain, the European Union and others imposed tough sanctions on Syria after a crackdown by Assad on pro-democracy protests in 2011 that spiralled into civil war. But the new reality in Syria has been complicated by sanctions on HTS – and some leaders – for its days as an al Qaeda affiliate.

Germany, which is leading the EU’s discussion on sanctions, on Sunday (January 12, 2025) proposed allowing relief for the Syrian population, but retaining sanctions on Assad allies who “committed serious crimes” during Syria’s war.

“Syrians now need a quick dividend from the transition of power, and we continue to help those in Syria who have nothing, as we have done all the years of civil war,” German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock told reporters in Riyadh.

She said Germany would provide a further 50 million euros for food, emergency shelters and medical care.

The United States on Monday (January 13, 2025) issued a six-month exemption of its sanctions for transactions with governing institutions in Syria to try to ease the flow of humanitarian assistance and allow some energy transactions.

British foreign minister David Lammy joined the Riyadh talks along with ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, as well as the U.N. special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.

Discussions would focus on support for the interim Syrian authorities, “including mechanisms to hold the Assad regime to account for the war crimes they perpetrated against the Syrian people,” the U.K. foreign office said in a statement.

  • Bangladesh summons Indian envoy over border tensions

Bangladesh summons Indian envoy over border tensions

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry on Sunday (January 12, 2025) summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma over border tensions.

In an official press release Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin said the Government of Bangladesh had “deep concern“ over the recent activities of the Border Security Force (BSF) of India along the Bangladesh-India Border, to the High Commissioner of India H.E. Pranay Verma at his office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The development came hours after Dhaka alleged that India was trying to construct fences at five locations along the Indo-Bangla border, in violation of a bilateral agreement.

He said, “Such activities particularly the unauthorised attempt to construct barbed wire fencing and the related operational actions by BSF, have caused tensions and disturbances along the border.” He emphasised that the construction of barbed wire fences without proper authorisation undermines the spirit of cooperation and friendly relations between the two neighbouring countries. He hoped that the upcoming BGB-BSF DG Level Talks would be able to discuss the matter at length.

Referring to the recent killing of a Bangladesh citizen at Sunamganj by BSF, the Foreign Secretary said the Bangladesh Government strongly resented these acts of killing and called for urgent action by the Indian authorities to stop the recurrence of such incidents and conduct enquiries into all these border killings and take actions against those responsible. He mentioned that it is also a matter of grave concern that despite repeated firm commitments from the Indian authorities to pursue a non-lethal strategy and to stop killings, such incidents of killing have been continuing.

He also called upon the Government of India to advise all concerned authorities in India to refrain from any provocative actions that could escalate tensions along the shared border.

Mr. Uddin also said, “Bangladesh believes that such issues should be resolved through constructive dialogue, in accordance with existing bilateral agreements, and in a way that upholds peace and tranquillity along the border.”

Mr. Verma was seen entering the ministry around 3:00 p.m. His meeting with foreign secretary Jashim Uddin lasted approximately 45 minutes.

While no official statement was released by the interim government regarding the discussions, officials confirmed that the envoy has been summoned.

  • Imran Khan moves Lahore HC for post-arrest bail in eight cases linked to May 9 riot

Pakistan’s incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan has moved the Lahore High Court seeking post-arrest bail in eight cases related to the May 9, 2023 violence, including the attack on the residence of a senior army officer.

The separate bail petitions were filed before the LHC on Saturday.

In November last year, Lahore’s anti-terrorism court had denied bail to Khan in these cases.

Khan, 72, in his petitions argued that the prosecution has failed to establish his involvement in the May 9 violence, which occurred following his arrest.

On May 9, 2023, violent protests erupted after the arrest of Khan by paramilitary Rangers from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. His party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander house), Mianwali airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob.

Khan said he was implicated in the May 9 cases as a result of a “well-orchestrated plan merely to harass and humiliate him for political reasons”.

He said the sole allegation against him in these cases is of “abetment”, which has been supplemented by the prosecution most vaguely.

“The trial judge overlooked the fact that frivolous and baseless allegations related to the May 9 events have already been rejected due to inconsistencies in the story of the investigating agency. I have been facing unprecedented political victimisation for the last two years. The May 9 cases are yet another effort by the state/police to implicate me in a criminal matter under the sole allegation of abetment,” he argued and pleaded before the LHC to set aside the trial court’s decision and grant post-arrest bail to him.

Khan is reportedly named in 12 cases related to the May 9 events, though he has already secured bail in four of them.

The LHC is likely to take up Khan’s petition on Monday. Khan has been in jail in multiple cases since August 2023.

  • Presentations, Lunch At Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue: PM Modi Spends Day With “Young Friends”

Presentations, Lunch At Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue: PM Modi Spends Day With “Young Friends”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spent around six hours with young leaders, ten of whom gave presentations on various topics ranging from sustainable development to integrating technology with agriculture.

The Young India Leaders Dialogue was held from 10 am till 4 pm as part of PM Modi’s Viksit Bharat (Developed India) vision, aiming at the country’s development by 2047. “A developed India will be the one that is empowered economically, strategically, socially and culturally,” he added.

Around 3,000 young minds from across the country participated in these discussions, where Mr Modi also presented some ideas of his own. He also urged the youth to step out of their comfort zones to achieve these objectives. Achieving ambitious goals requires the active participation and collective effort of every citizen of the nation, he added.

PM Modi emphasised the need for setting big goals, citing the examples of US’s rise following the 1930s economic crisis and Singapore’s rise. He also cited examples of India succeeding in becoming an open defecation-free country, and the management of the coronavirus pandemic.

PM Modi urged the youth to become catalysts for change, drawing from the innovative ideas shared throughout the day.

Discussion of ideas was also held during a lunch the Prime Minister held with the youth leaders, among them young girls from the North East region.

The Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue aimed to break the 25-year-old tradition of holding the National Youth Festival in a conventional manner.
