  • Canada Ex-Central Banker Mark Carney Launches PM Bid

Canada Ex-Central Banker Mark Carney Launches PM Bid

Mark Carney, the former governor of Canada’s central bank, on Thursday launched his bid to succeed Justin Trudeau as Liberal Party leader and prime minister, immediately becoming a frontrunner in the race.

The 59-year-old Harvard- and Oxford-educated economist kicked off his campaign at a hockey rink in Edmonton, Alberta where he grew up.

“I’m doing this because Canada is the best country in the world, but it still could be even better,” Carney told a crowd of supporters.

Pitching himself as an outsider and an unconventional politician with strong economic chops, he vowed to get the Canadian economy “back on track” and beat back Donald Trump’s tariffs threat.

Carney is expected to go head-to-head with his friend, former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, who is scheduled to announce her leadership bid on Sunday.

Freeland’s surprise resignation in December, after clashing with her boss over how to respond to Trump’s threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports, precipitated a political crisis that saw Trudeau last week announce he was quitting too.

Whoever wins the leadership will automatically become prime minister and inherit a party that is 20 points behind the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre in the polls. They could also face snap elections as early as March.

A relative unknown to most Canadians, on Thursday Carney immediately went on the offensive against Poilievre, accusing him of putting forward “bad ideas, naive and dangerous ideas.”

At the same time, the former UN special envoy on climate action acknowledged that Canada’s climate measures such as a carbon levy — which Poilievre wants to scrap — have not worked for all Canadians.

Meanwhile, in a recent appearance on “The Daily Show” Carney playfully pushed back at Trump’s unlikely plan for Canada to become the 51st US state, telling host Jon Stewart: “We’re not moving in with you.”

“We can be friends,” he added. “Friends with benefits.”

Stewart responded that he felt like Carney was breaking up with him during the interview.

  • Eyeing SUV leadership to regain 50% share, says Suzuki Motor’s Toshihiro

Eyeing SUV leadership to regain 50% share, says Suzuki Motor’s Toshihiro

Maruti Suzuki India aims to regain 50% market share in the passenger vehicle segment in India, and become the top sport utility vehicle maker in the country, said Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Suzuki Motor – the parent of the Indian carmaker. However, Suzuki did not share the timeline for achieving these goals.

“We are making efforts, with the aim of reviving our market (share)… We would like to acquire top market share in the SUV segment and we would like to revive our market share to 50%,” Suzuki said, addressing the media ahead of Bharat Mobility Show 2025.

At the end of 2024, Maruti Suzuki had a market share of 40-41% in the passenger vehicle segment. This is the lowest market share recorded by the company in almost a decade. Sales of small cars–which account for the majority of Maruti Suzuki’s volumes–have declined over the last few years on account of rising input costs, a change in customer preference, and higher regulatory costs.

In the car segment—i.e., hatchbacks and sedans—Maruti Suzuki has a share of over 67%, and in the van segment, the company has over 90%. However, at the end of 2024, the above segments accounted for less than 30% of the Indian passenger vehicle market. In the remaining sales, comprising SUVs, Maruti Suzuki had a share of only 27%.

This week, Autocar Professional exclusively reported that India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, plans to launch close to half a dozen utility vehicles in the next two to three years. The company’s portfolio may see 10 new models including upgrades to existing models. The launch pipeline includes models ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, and these utility vehicles will have various powertrains, including petrol, CNG, hybrid, and EV.

Maruti Suzuki aims to flood the market with a new range of SUVs and multi-purpose vehicles to expand the choices for prospective buyers moving to competitive models, and to regain lost share due to moderation in affordable car sales. The automaker is scheduled to launch its first electric passenger vehicle ‘e Vitara’ tomorrow, on the first day of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. The e Vitara will take on the Tata Curvv, Mahindra BE 6, and the yet-to-be-launched Hyundai Creta EV.

Maruti Suzuki is scheduled to launch its first electric passenger vehicle ‘e Vitara’ on the first day of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 tomorrow. The e Vitara will take on the Tata Curvv, Mahindra BE 6, and the yet-to-be-launched Hyundai Creta EV.

“In the case of SUV [market]…Maruti Suzuki got a little delayed…So therefore it is imperative for us to introduce new models in this segment, but it doesn’t mean that we are going to have less emphasis on sedans and hatchback…we would like to ensure that the sedans and hatchbacks of Maruti Suzuki…go further,” said Suzuki.

According to Suzuki, India’s largest automaker remains focused on capturing the two-wheeler customers who are looking to upgrade to a four-wheeler.

“Capturing customers who are upgrading from a two-wheeler is very important for us. These kinds of customers in India are more than 1 billion, so we would like to focus first on this category,” Suzuki said.

On the small car segment, Suzuki expects growth to return, banking on two-wheeler owners upgrading to a four-wheeler.

“I don’t think the small car would cease to exist. People are likely to shift from a two-wheeler to a new car, and they would need a good car in the small car segment,” he said.

SpaceX Succeeds In ‘Catching’ Starship Rocket A Second Time

SpaceX succeeded Thursday in once more catching the descending first-stage booster of its Starship megarocket in the “chopstick” arms of its launch tower, a stunning engineering feat it first accomplished in October.

The gleaming stainless-steel booster carefully lowered itself using its thrusters, prompting cheers and applause from the SpaceX mission control team at Starbase, in Boca Chica, Texas.

  • US “Confident” Gaza Ceasefire Implementation To Start Sunday

US “Confident” Gaza Ceasefire Implementation To Start Sunday

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced confidence that the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza would begin Sunday, as Israel awaited a cabinet vote and accused Hamas of backtracking.

“I am confident, and I fully expect that implementation will begin, as we said, on Sunday,” Blinken said at a farewell news conference Thursday.

Blinken said that he and other officials of President Joe Biden’s administration, which ends Monday, were on the telephone to try to resolve issues in the ceasefire announced Wednesday through mediator Qatar.

“It’s not exactly surprising that in a process, in a negotiation, that has been this challenging and this fraught, you may get a loose end. We’re tying up that loose end as we speak,” Blinken said.

Blinken’s opening remarks were disrupted by two activists who regularly show up at press briefings. Both were asked to leave, with one of them shouting slogans as he waited for State Department security to remove him.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cabinet was set to vote on the deal on Friday. At least two cabinet members have voiced opposition to the ceasefire.

Netanyahu’s office has accused Hamas of reneging on key parts of the agreement, suggestions denied by the Palestinian militant group — as new Israeli strikes before the ceasefire kill dozens in Gaza.

In a highly unusual arrangement, an envoy from President-elect Donald Trump took part in the final negotiations on the ceasefire side-by-side with an incumbent official in Biden’s White House.

Asked about Trump claiming he sealed the deal, Blinken said: “The important thing is not who gets the credit; the important thing is getting the results.”

“Virtually everything that now needs to be implemented under the agreement will be implemented under the Trump administration,” Blinken said.

“It was very important for the parties to know that the Trump administration stood behind the agreement that we negotiated.”

Asked whether the Biden administration will leave without any determination on whether Israel has carried out human rights violations, Blinken said: “In Gaza, we faced a uniquely challenging situation in trying to make final determinations.”

“Uniquely in Gaza, besides having a population that’s been trapped there that has nowhere else to go, you have an enemy that embeds itself in and among civilians, houses, hospitals, mosques, schools,” Blinken said.

He spoke after Israel has been accused repeatedly by rights groups and the United Nations of violations in Gaza. On Thursday Human Rights Watch called out Israel for committing “crimes against humanity” and possibly “genocide” during the war.

Blinken also defended his own record on human rights, pointing to statements and sanctions against extremist Israeli settlers over violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

  • 119-Year-Old Brazilian Woman Stakes Claim As World’s Oldest Person

119-Year-Old Brazilian Woman Stakes Claim As World’s Oldest Person

Two months away from what she says is her 120th birthday, Deolira Gliceria Pedro da Silva, a great-grandmother from the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is rushing to be recognized as the world’s oldest living person by the Guinness World Records.

The institution currently features another Brazilian, Inah Canabarro Lucas, a nun from the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul as the oldest living person at 116 years, but Deolira’s family and doctors are confident that she will soon take the religious woman’s title.

“She is still not in the book, but she is the oldest in the world according to the documents we have on her, as I recently discovered,” said Deolira’s granddaughter Doroteia Ferreira da Silva, who is half her age.

The documents show that Pedro da Silva was born on March 10th 1905 in the rural area of Porciuncula, a small town in the state of Rio. She now lives in a colorfully painted house in Itaperuna, where her two granddaughters Doroteia, 60, and Lidia Ferreira da Silva, 64, take care of her.

The grandmother is also supervised by doctors and researchers who are interested in how she outlived the average life expectancy in Brazil, which currently sits at 76.4 years, by more than four decades.

“Mrs. Deolira, in 2025, will be 120 years old. She is in a good general state of health for her condition, she is not taking any medication,” said geriatric doctor Juair de Abreu Pereira, who checks up on Pedro da Silva frequently and is assisting her family in the process with Guinness World Records.

In a statement, Guinness said it couldn’t confirm receiving Pedro da Silva’s application, because it receives many from people around the world who claim to be the oldest living person.

Major floods in the region almost twenty years ago destroyed most of Deolira’s original documents, her doctor said. That may pose a challenge for the official recognition of her age.

Even if her age is not precise, Pedro da Silva is certainly older than 100 years, according to Mateus Vidigal, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo who has studied her case as part of a project to understand the super elderly population of Brazil.

“Mrs. Deolira has not been excluded from the study, but there is this fragility which is the lack of documentation that is approved by those organizations,” Vidigal said, referring to vetting institutions such as the Guinness World Records.

Pedro Silva’s healthy diet and sleeping habits are key to her longevity, according to Dr. Pereira. To this day, she has a good interaction with her family and likes eating bananas.

“I wish I could get to her age and be like that,” Ferreira da Silva, her granddaughter, said. “While we have high blood pressure and diabetes, she does not have any of that.”

  • ‘Mulholland Drive’ And ‘Twin Peaks’ Director David Lynch Dies At 78

‘Mulholland Drive’ And ‘Twin Peaks’ Director David Lynch Dies At 78

David Lynch — the singular and surreal director of “Mulholland Drive” and television’s “Twin Peaks,” who depicted the darkness lurking beneath the wholesome surface of American life — has died. He was 78 years old.

An enigmatic artist who turned his hand to arthouse and blockbuster film, television, painting and music, Lynch was considered first and foremost one of US cinema’s great auteurs.

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” read a statement on his official Facebook page.

“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”

The cause and location of death were not specified. Lynch, who lived in Los Angeles, had suffered from emphysema after years of heavy smoking.

He emerged on the US indie scene with his groundbreaking 1977 horror “Eraserhead,” a creepy and now cult classic shot on a shoestring budget over five years because he kept running out of money.

Lynch acquired a devoted following with critically adored films including sadomasochist mystery “Blue Velvet” (1986) and surreal thriller “Mulholland Drive” (2001).

But he may be best remembered for his mesmerizing 1990s series “Twin Peaks,” which paved the way for many a prestige television drama to follow.

With four Oscar nominations, including a trio of best director nods, the filmmaker recognizable by his shock of white hair took home just one honorary statuette, in 2019.

    – ‘Fearless’ –

Tributes from across Hollywood were swiftly posted to social media.

“#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul and proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema,” wrote director Ron Howard.

“David Lynch, RIP. At least that’s what the horse wearing a fez just told me* in a dream. (*Backwards and in Swedish),” said comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, in a nod to Lynch’s highly surreal style.

Born in small-town Montana in 1946, the son of a US Department of Agriculture research scientist, Lynch travelled extensively around Middle America as a young man.

He attended fine arts colleges in both Boston and Philadelphia, where he studied painting.

A one-minute animated film caught the eye of the American Film Institute, where he began work on what would later become “Eraserhead.”

That was followed by 1980’s “The Elephant Man,” also shot in black-and-white and deeply tragic, but decidedly more mainstream and accessible. Lynch earned his first best director Oscar nomination.

Based on the diary of Joseph Merrick, the so-called “Elephant Man” born in the United States in 1862 with a condition that gave him a severely deformed physical appearance, it starred Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt.

An attempt to adapt sci-fi novel “Dune” into a blockbuster in 1984 would be one of Lynch’s less well-received efforts, though it still has its admirers.

Lynch pivoted back to his arthouse roots with “Blue Velvet,” about a young man who comes home from college and finds a severed ear. His investigation uncovers the sinister side of small-town America.

It starred Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper, along with his regular collaborators Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern, and is often heralded as his greatest work. It also earned Lynch’s second Academy Award nomination for directing.

After winning the top prize Palme d’Or at Cannes with “Wild at Heart” in 1990, Lynch turned his attention to television with “Twin Peaks,” which captivated and shocked American in equal measure from its 1990 launch.

The tale of a tight-knit northwestern town reacting to the rape and murder of a popular but troubled high school girl, it was years ahead of its time and far more sophisticated than most network programming even today.

But ratings plummeted as the show’s second season lost its direction after the purported meddling of ABC executives, and was cancelled. An even darker 1992 prequel film was initially panned by critics, but is now considered a classic.

    – ‘Singular and irreplaceable’ –

After returning to film with “Lost Highway” and “The Straight Story,” Lynch in 2001 made his second undisputed masterpiece, “Mulholland Drive, which brought Lynch his third best director Oscar nomination.

In a baffling world of hallucinations and cryptic happenings, Naomi Watts plays a naive actress who meets a mysterious brunette suffering amnesia, before everything gets inverted in an astonishing twist that still has fans arguing over its meaning to this day.

Film writer David Thomson called it “one of the greatest films ever made about the cultural devastation caused by Hollywood.”

Lynch’s final full-length feature film was 2006’s inscrutable “Inland Empire,” although he returned to the world of “Twin Peaks” with an acclaimed sequel series for cable network Showtime in 2017.

But he never retired, continuing to produce short films, music and paintings from his studio and home — appropriately located just outside Hollywood, on Mulholland Drive.

He regularly posted whimsical weather updates to his YouTube channel, underlining the optimistic and playful man behind his often troubling art.

“It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way,” said his family’s tribute Thursday.

“I join you in the depths of this grief, in love and in reverence and celebration of someone who is singular and irreplaceable,” wrote his “Twin Peaks” collaborator, singer Chrystabell.

  • ‘There’s no dignity in this’ – hospital A&E units under pressure

‘There’s no dignity in this’ – hospital A&E units under pressure

‘No dignity in this’, say staff on stretched A&E

“I’ve got no oxygen”, cries emergency department nurse Lisa Blackwell.

She calls for more supplies just as three ambulances are about to arrive at Chesterfield Hospital in Derbyshire.

The new state-of-the-art A&E unit was opened less than two years ago but is already at breaking point.

During several days of filming, BBC News saw 22 cubicles in the major bays full, with beds overflowing into the corridors.

“There’s no dignity in this,” says senior matron Stacie Russon.

An elderly lady has fallen on the slippery ice outside and has a large cut to her forehead. The blood is dripping down her cheeks. Her son gently tries to dab it away with a tissue as a nurse comes by with a blood pressure stand.

Her trolley is in a line of five banked up outside cubicles, while the patient on a bed in front vomits into a sick bowl.

Nationally, flu numbers are finally falling. The hope is that patient numbers would fall too – but the cold snap is posing problems.

“The cold and ice isn’t a good combination for elderly people,” says Dr Dan Crook, clinical co-lead in the emergency department.

One lady, Ann, had her leg crushed by her car after it slid on the ice and trapped her against the garage door.

“Some local school children heard me screaming and eventually gathered enough of them to push my car over and rescue me. They were amazing,” says Ann.

Patients are also presenting with hypothermia.

Michael Alton, 83, is in the resuscitation bay. When he arrived his temperature had fallen to 30.6C (87F).

He was found by his neighbour, who decided that waiting for an ambulance would take too long and drove him in.

As bloods are taken, heating blankets work fast to try and bring his temperature back up to the normal range of around 37C (99F). He’s confused and weak.

A man lays in a hospital bed with a nurse speaking to him.
Nurses say Michael Alton was lucky to be found when he was

The beep of Dan Crook’s emergency pager signals another job and he rushes off to the ambulance arrival bay.

James Oakes is elderly, hypothermic and confused. The paramedics fear sepsis.

“He’s a farmer,” says Dan. “He’s soldiered on for a while but now he’s critically ill. We need to get his temperature and oxygen levels up fast.”

A patient like James should be seen in the resuscitation bay as well but it’s full.

Instead he’s assessed and stabilised in the ambulance area. It is only when he is eventually moved into a cubicle that the nurse has time to remove his muddy Wellington boots.

“How long will I be here for?” he asks. His animals need feeding. “I’ve never been to hospital before and I don’t want to stay here long.”

A patient lays in a hospital bed with nurses tending to him slightly out of focus
James Oakes arrived at hospital critically ill

Managing the flow through a hospital – that is, freeing up beds by moving on those who are ready to leave – is a vital and challenging task.

Dr Hal Miller, a medical consultant and chief executive of Chesterfield Royal, says up to 80 beds out of 540 are occupied by patients who are fit to leave but cannot because of issues at home or with social care.

Some of these patients have been admitted even though there is nothing fundamentally wrong – they just have nowhere else safe to return to.

“It makes it very difficult because it means we don’t have the capacity to look after people who need care most but when it’s 02:00 we end up looking after these people – it’s the right thing to do,” says Dr Miller.

The message from Chesterfield’s staff is that they are coping, just, and that they are offering safe care.

But they are clear it’s nowhere near where it should be and, through no fault of their own, the standard is falling short of what they were trained to provide.

  • Man who abused girlfriend before she took own life jailed

Man who abused girlfriend before she took own life jailed

Man who abused mum before she took own life jailed

Ryan Wellings had a previous conviction for “battering” an ex-girlfriend before he met Kiena Dawes

A father-of-three who psychologically and physically abused his vulnerable partner before she took her own life has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.

Fleetwood hairdresser Kiena Dawes was 23 when she died on a railway line in Lancashire on 22 July 2022.

The mother-of-one left a note on her mobile phone claiming she was “was murdered” and that her boyfriend, 30-year-old Ryan Wellings, was a “monster and a bully” who had “killed” her.

Wellings was cleared of her manslaughter by a jury at Preston Crown Court but convicted of assault and coercive and controlling behaviour relating to the abuse she suffered during her life.

A smiling Kiena Dawes, who has long brown hair and wears a long-sleeved black top, reaches towards the top of a Christmas tree while holding her baby daughter
Kiena Dawes said she wanted to stay alive for her daughter but had been “killed” by the abuse of her boyfriend

The assault charge, the court heard, referred to two weeks before her death when Wellings slammed a door into Miss Dawes head at their flat in Fleetwood, knocking her unconscious and leaving her covered in blood.

The attack happened in the presence of their screaming baby daughter.

Wellings was jailed for six years for the abuse of Miss Dawes, and an additional six months for an unrelated assault on his friend, a man called Scott Fletcher.

Miss Dawes’ mother, Angela Dawes, read a statement in court ahead of sentencing in which she described how his baby daughter had been “exposed to and experienced extreme domestic abuse and violence against her mummy”.

The victim’s brother, Kynan Dawes, also read a victim impact statement which said: “The world now knows what a monster he is.”

Wellings, a landscape gardener from Bispham in Lancashire, had previously been convicted of “battering” an ex-girlfriend before he met Miss Dawes, and also had convictions for burglary and criminal damage going back to his teenage years.

Paul Greaney KC, prosecuting, told the judge that although the jury did not convict Wellings of manslaughter, the court should sentence him on the basis his coercive abuse of Miss Dawes “set the scene for her death”.

“Kiena was caused to feel – on many occasions – serious alarm and distress,” he said.

“This had a substantial effect on her and caused her significant psychological harm.”

During his trial the prosecution had outlined how Wellings initially “swept Miss Dawes off her feet” when they met in January 2020.

Over the next two-and-a-half years, however, he was frequently violent including punching, strangling and dragging his partner to the floor.

Wellings had given Miss Dawes a black-eye while she was pregnant, and attacked her in front of children.

In notes on her phone detailing the abuse, Miss Dawes said on one occasion he had held her head underwater in her daughter’s baby bath, and on another had brandished an electric drill and warned he would “drill the teeth out of my mouth”.

Other terrifying threats including to scar her face with acid, and that if she reported him to police her baby would be taken away due to her mental health condition.

    ‘No remorse’

However John Jones KC, defending Wellings, argued that the relationship was not completely characterised by abuse.

“It’s wrong to say the coercive and controlling relationship was in existence throughout,” he said.

“There were good and bad times.”

Sentencing Wellings, Judge Robert Altham, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, branded the defendant “a clear danger to any partner” who had “shown no remorse”.

“Kiena Dawes was a popular, vivacious, friendly young woman,” he said.

“She had history of mental illness. Through no fault of hers, she was vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.”

Judge Altham described how Wellings followed a “pattern of assaulting and mistreating her and promising to change, only to do it again”.

“You disparaged her appearance and said her dead father would be ashamed of her, that she was fat and ugly and incompetent at her work”, he added.

Wellings smiled as he was taken down to the cells.

Angela Dawes earlier told the court she would raise her granddaughter, describing it as an “honour and a privilege”.

“[The child] has already asked me where her mummy is, I found it impossible to answer that question,” she said.

Marie, who has short dark brown hair and wears a black coat, speaks to the camera outside Preston Crown Court with a serious expression on her face.
Marie, from Advocacy after Fatal Domestic Abuse, said lawmakers need to “sit up and listen”

Campaign group Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse called for changes in the law to increase the maximum sentence for coercive and controlling behaviour and make it easier to bring manslaughter charges.

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, one of its advocates, Marie, said: “Although nothing is going to bring Kiena back, nothing is going to bring that little girl her mummy back, there are huge changes that need to be made in the law.”

Marie said in her experience the number of deaths where domestic abuse was a factor in someone taking their own life was beginning to overtake the number of domestic violence homicides.

“Decision makers need to sit up and listen to what’s happened today and what needs to be done moving forwards to protect victims of domestic abuse,” she added.

Film director David Lynch dies at 78, family says

David Lynch, the American filmmaker whose works include the surrealist cult classics Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has died aged 78.

Lynch’s death was announced on his official Facebook page by his family.

“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” the post said.

“But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ … It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

Lynch revealed in August last year he was battling emphysema, a chronic lung disease, from “many years of smoking”.

Considered by many a maverick filmmaker, he received three best director Oscar nominations throughout his career for his work on Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Mulholland Drive.

His last major project was Twin Peaks: The Return, which was broadcast in 2017, and continued the TV series that ran for two seasons in the early 1990s.

Fellow film director Ron Howard paid tribute to Lynch on social media, calling him a “gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema”.

Musician Moby, for whom Lynch directed the video for Shot In The Back Of The Head, said he was “just heartbroken”.

Many of Lynch’s films were known for their surrealist, dreamlike quality.

Eraserhead, his first major release in 1977, was filled with dark, disturbing imagery.

“While his imagination clearly has an eye for the viscerally potent, this remains an unremarkable feat by his later standards,” a BBC reviewer said of the film in 2001.

In a May 2024 interview with BBC Radio Three’s Sound of Cinema, Lynch described the process of working with late composer Angelo Badalamenti, who designed many of the soundscapes that accompanied his vision.

“And then I say, ‘no that’s still too fast, it’s not dark enough, it’s not heavy and foreboding enough,’” Lynch recalled.

He won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival for Wild at Heart in 1990.

His body of work was recognised at the Oscars in 2020 when he was given an honorary Academy Award.

The director said last year that, despite his emphysema diagnosis, he was in “excellent shape” and would “never retire”.

He added the diagnosis was the “price to pay” for his smoking habit.

But his condition deteriorated within months. In a November interview with People magazine, he said he needed oxygen to walk.

Born in Missoula, Montana, Lynch first began a career in painting before switching to making short films during the 1960s.

  • Israel Far-Right Minister Ben Gvir Says Will Quit Cabinet Over Gaza Deal

Israel Far-Right Minister Ben Gvir Says Will Quit Cabinet Over Gaza Deal

Israeli far-right police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir threatened on Tuesday to quit Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government if he agrees to a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal being negotiated at talks in Qatar.

Ben-Gvir, whose departure would not bring down Netanyahu’s government, urged Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to join him in a last-ditch attempt to prevent a ceasefire deal, which he described as a dangerous capitulation to Hamas.

“This move is our only chance to prevent (the deal’s) execution, and prevent Israel’s surrender to Hamas, after more than a year of bloody war, in which more than 400 IDF (Israel Defence Forces) soldiers fell in the Gaza Strip, and to ensure that their deaths are not in vain,” Ben-Gvir said on X.

Smotrich said on Monday that he objects to the deal but did not threaten to bolt Netanyahu’s coalition. A majority of ministers are expected to back the phased ceasefire deal, which details a halt to fighting and the release of hostages.

Ben-Gvir echoed remarks by Smotrich, who said on Monday Israel should keep up its military campaign in Gaza until the complete surrender of Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose Oct. 7 2023 attack caused the war.

About 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’ 2023 assault on Israel and more than 250 others were taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, more than 46,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials, with much of the enclave laid to waste and most its population displaced.

The United States, Qatar and Egypt have been mediating a ceasefire deal and agreements could be imminent, officials have said.

Some hostage families oppose the deal because they fear that the phased deal taking shape will see only some of the remaining 98 hostages freed and others left behind.

Successive surveys have shown broad support among the Israeli public for such a deal.

  • Blinken Brushes Off Trump Threats On Panama Canal

Blinken Brushes Off Trump Threats On Panama Canal

Outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday dismissed as bluster President-elect Donald Trump’s threats to seize the Panama Canal, instead anticipating a more traditional strategy of diversifying supply chains.

“On the Panama Canal, we have a treaty, we have a settled policy of many years, and that’s not going to change,” Blinken said at a farewell news conference.

“I think it doesn’t warrant spending a lot of time talking about it,” he said of Trump’s threats.

At a freewheeling news conference this month in Florida, Trump refused to rule out using force to seize the Panama Canal and even Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.

Trump has pointed to rising Chinese influence in the Panama Canal, inaugurated in 1914 and built by the United States, mostly with Afro-Caribbean labor.

Panama took full control of the canal at the end of 1999 under a deal shepherded by late president Jimmy Carter, who saw a moral responsibility to treat Panama more respectfully.

Alluding to concerns about China’s clout in industry around the world, Blinken said that President Joe Biden’s administration has made “extraordinary progress” in seeking “a greater diversity of supply chains.”

“So that’s where the focus should be, and that’s where I expect the focus actually will be,” Blinken said.

But Marco Rubio, tapped by Trump as the next secretary of state, said at his Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday: “This is not a joke. The Panama Canal issue is a very serious one.”

He asked whether Chinese companies could take control of surrounding ports and, under orders of Beijing, decide to “shut it down or impede our transit.”

“This is a legitimate issue that needs to be confronted,” Rubio said.

  • Pierre Poilievre Speech LIVE | Canada’s Poilievre Rips into Liberals Over Capital Gains Tax Hike

Pierre Poilievre Speech LIVE | Canada’s Poilievre Rips into Liberals Over Capital Gains Tax Hike

Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, strongly criticized the Liberal government’s proposed hike to the capital gains tax, which is set to take effect on June 25, 2024. Poilievre condemned the increase in the capital gains inclusion rate from 50% to 66.67% for individuals earning over $250,000 in capital gains annually, arguing that it would have detrimental effects on various sectors of the economy.

Poilievre labeled the tax hike as a "job-killing tax" that would adversely affect healthcare, housing, agriculture, and small businesses. He stated, "Trudeau is hiking taxes on homebuilding during a housing shortage," and emphasized that this policy would drive away investment and jobs from Canada.

  • Hours After Killing Cash Van Guard, Robbers Shoot At Man In Another State

Hours After Killing Cash Van Guard, Robbers Shoot At Man In Another State

After shooting the guard of an ATM cash vehicle in Karnataka’s Bidar on Thursday afternoon and escaping with Rs 93 lakh in cash, two robbers opened fire at another person in Hyderabad hours later.

The latest victim, who works as a manager at a private travel firm, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. An alert has been sounded in the entire city and efforts are underway to arrest the accused, the police added.

The incident took place at Afzal Gunj area when the robbers were preparing to board a bus to travel to Raipur.

Sources said the two men arrived in Hyderabad on a bike after committing the murder and robbery in Bidar and then visited a private travel agency’s office to book tickets for a bus to Raipur.

The agency’s owner, Rais Ahmad, told reporters that the two men visited his office between 3pm and 4pm.

“One of them introduced himself as Amit Kumar. Their bus was scheduled to leave at around 7pm. We usually inspect luggage if we find anything suspicious. When our manager, Jahangir, asked them to open their bag, the accused took out a few bundles of notes and tried to bribe him. When Jahangir insisted on seeing the contents of the bag, the accused opened fire at him and subsequently escaped,” Mr Ahmad said.

Jahangir underwent a surgery and is recovering in a hospital, he added.

Earlier in the day, the two men shot dead an ATM cash vehicle guard and injured another as they looted Rs 93 lakh from the vehicle in Bidar. The incident took place in front of the State Bank of India’s (SBI’s) main branch in the city, where the van was parked to reload an ATM.

One of the guards in the vehicle, Giri Venkatesh, died on the spot, while another guard, Shivakumar, sustained injuries. Doctors said that Shivakumar is in a critical condition.

Before opening fire, the robbers threw chilli powder on the guards, police said. Although local residents raised an alarm, threw stones at them, and attempted to catch them, the robbers managed to escape.

  • Justin Trudeau Rules Out Contesting The Next Canadian Election

Justin Trudeau Rules Out Contesting The Next Canadian Election

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will not be running in the upcoming federal elections, scheduled for October this year. This decision comes after Trudeau stated last week that he would step down as Prime Minister as soon as his Liberal Party chooses a new leader. “In terms of my own decisions, I will not be running in the upcoming election,” Trudeau said during a press conference in Ottawa.

Trudeau expressed uncertainty about his future after leaving politics, stating, “As to what I might be doing later, I honestly haven’t had much time to think about that at all. I am entirely focused on doing the job that Canadians elected me to do in an extraordinarily pivotal time right now.” He also met with Canada’s premiers, the ambassador to the US, and some federal cabinet ministers to discuss how Canada would respond to Trump’s tariff threats.

After serving as Prime Minister for over nine years, Trudeau faced pressure from the opposition and within his party to resign. This pressure intensified after the resignation of his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland. Trudeau announced, “I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process”.

The process to replace Trudeau has not officially begun, but some well-known Liberal faces have started announcing their intentions to run. Interested candidates must notify the party and make an initial payment by January 23, and the party’s new leader will be announced on March 9. Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland are expected to be leading contenders.

Trudeau will remain Prime Minister until the Liberal leadership election concludes in March and plans to serve as a member of Parliament until the next federal elections are held. However, he will cease to be an MP in the new Parliament if he does not contest and win in the election.

  • Myanmar Militant Group Leader Among 5 Arrested In Transnational Arms Bust: Mizoram Police

Myanmar Militant Group Leader Among 5 Arrested In Transnational Arms Bust: Mizoram Police

The leader of a Myanmar-based militant group was among five people who were arrested by the Mizoram Police in what they said was one of the largest arms bust in the northeast state.

The weapons were for trade between the Myanmar-based militant group Chin National Front (CNF) and the United People’s Democratic Front, a militant group active in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The police in a statement said the operation highlighted the transnational character of arms smuggling in the region.

“Five accused have been arrested in connection with this arms seizure. Among those detained is a notable leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group based in Myanmar. The arrest of such a high-profile individual is a significant achievement in counter-insurgency operations in the state of Mizoram,” the state police said in the statement.

“This operation highlights the transnational character of illegal arms dealings and emphasises the ongoing threats to regional stability… With this catch, a serious threat to regional peace and stability has been neutralised,” the police said.

The operation was carried out “in partnership with a sister intelligence agency”, the police said. The weapons seized from the outskirts of Saithah village in Mamit district included six AK series assault rifles, over 10,000 rounds and 13 magazines.

    A case has been filed.

In September 2022, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) searched two locations in Mizoram’s Aizawl in a case linked to the recovery of 2,400 kg of explosives, including 1,000 detonators and 4,500 metres of fuse wires. During the searches, incriminating material including mobile phones and bank documents were seized from the premises of the suspects.

Investigation found the explosives were to be sent to Myanmar-based militant group Chin National Front (CNF).

Mizoram is one of the states in the northeast that shares a border with Myanmar and Bangladesh. With ethnic rebels fighting the junta in Myanmar, over 40,000 refugees have taken shelter in Mizoram. The local population on both sides of the border has ethnic affiliations.

Sunita Williams steps out on spacewalk after seven months in orbit

One of NASA’s two stuck astronauts got a much welcomed change of scenery on Thursday (January 16, 2025), stepping out on her first spacewalk since arriving at the International Space Station more than seven months ago.

Sunita Williams, the station’s commander, had to tackle some overdue outdoor repair work alongside NASA’s Nick Hague. They emerged as the orbiting lab sailed 420km above Turkmenistan.

“I’m coming out,” Ms. Williams radioed.

Plans called for Ms. Williams to float back out next week with Butch Wilmore. Ms. Williams and Mr. Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s new Starliner capsule last June on what should have been a weeklong test flight.

But Starliner trouble dragged out their return, and NASA ordered the capsule to come back empty. Then SpaceX delayed the launch of their replacements, meaning the two won’t be home until late March or early April — ten months after launching.

It was the first spacewalk by NASA astronauts since an aborted one last summer. U.S. spacewalks were put on hold after water leaked into the airlock from the cooling loop for an astronaut’s suit. NASA said the problem has been fixed.

This was the eighth spacewalk for Ms. Williams, who has lived on the space station before.

  • UK’s Starmer arrives in Ukraine for security talks with a pledge for a ’100-year partnership’

UK’s Starmer arrives in Ukraine for security talks with a pledge for a ’100-year partnership’

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Ukraine’s capital on Thursday (January 16, 2025) with a pledge to help guarantee the country’s security for a century, days before Donald Trump is sworn in as U.S. president.

The British government says Mr. Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will sign a “100-Year Partnership” treaty in Kyiv covering areas including defense, science, energy and trade.

Mr. Starmer’s unannounced visit is his first trip to Ukraine since he took office in July. He visited the country in 2023 when he was opposition leader, and has twice held talks with Mr. Zelenskyy in London since becoming prime minister.

On a gray and frosty morning, Starmer was greeted at Kyiv railway station by the U.K. ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris, and Ukraine’s envoy to London, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

The U.K., one of Ukraine’s biggest military backers, has pledged 12.8 billion pounds ($16 billion) in military and civilian aid since Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago, and has trained more than 50,000 Ukrainian troops on British soil. Mr. Starmer is to announce another 40 million pounds ($49 million) for Ukraine’s postwar economic recovery.

But the U.K.’s role is dwarfed by that of the United States, and there is deep uncertainty over the fate of American support for Ukraine once Trump takes office on Jan. 20. The president-elect has balked at the cost of U.S. aid to Kyiv, says he wants to bring the war to a swift end and is planning to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, for whom he has long expressed admiration.

Kyiv’s allies have rushed to flood Ukraine with as much support as possible before Trump’s inauguration, with the aim of putting Ukraine in the strongest position possible for any future negotiations to end the war.

Mr. Zelenskyy has said that in any peace negotiation, Ukraine would need assurances about its future protection from its much bigger neighbor.

Britain says its 100-year pledge is part of that assurance and will help ensure Ukraine is “never again vulnerable to the kind of brutality inflicted on it by Russia,” which seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and attempted a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The deal commits the two sides to cooperate on defense — especially maritime security against Russian activity in the Batlic Sea, Black Sea and Sea of Azov — and on technology projects including drones, which have become vital weapons for both sides in the war. The treaty also includes a system to help track stolen Ukrainian grain exported by Russia from occupied parts of the country.

“Putin’s ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level,” Starmer said ahead of the visit.

“This is not just about the here and now, it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century, bringing together technology development, scientific advances and cultural exchanges, and harnessing the phenomenal innovation shown by Ukraine in recent years for generations to come.”

Mr. Zelenskyy says he and Mr. Starmer also will discuss a plan proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron that would see troops from France and other Western countries stationed in Ukraine to oversee a ceasefire agreement.

Mr. Zelenskyy has said any such proposal should go alongside a timeline for Ukraine to join NATO. The alliance’s 32 member countries say that Ukraine will join one day, but not until after the war. Mr. Trump has appeared to sympathize with Mr. Putin’s position that Ukraine should not be part of NATO.

As the grinding war nears the three-year mark, both Russia and Ukraine are pushing for battlefield gains ahead of possible peace talks. Ukraine has started a second offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, where it is struggling to hang onto a chunk of territory it captured last year, and has stepped up drone and missile attacks on weapons sites and fuel depots inside Russia.

Moscow is slowly taking territory at the cost of high casualties along the 600-mile (1,000-kilometer) front line in eastern Ukraine and launching intense barrages at Ukraine’s energy system, seeking to deprive Ukrainians of heat and light in the depths of winter. A major Russian ballistic and cruise missile attack on regions across Ukraine on Wednesday compelled authorities to shut down the power grid in some areas.

“He Had Documents…They Killed Him”: OpenAI Whistleblower Suchir Balaji’s Mother

OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, have killed my son in order to hide something they want nobody to know, said Poornima Rao, mother of whistleblower and former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji. He had documents against them and what they are up to, she said in her latest tirade against the tech giant.

In an explosive interview to American commentator Tucker Carlson, Ms Rao made some stunning claims and serious charges over her son’s death and the opacity and secrecy in the world of Artificial Intelligence.

Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment in November, shortly after he had turned a whistleblower against AI-giant OpenAI. He had publicly raised ethical concerns about the ChatGPT maker’s practices before his death. After an initial investigation, authorities had concluded that his death was an act of suicide. However, his family has since called for an FBI investigation, highlighting several lapses and alleging that Balaji was murdered.

In the interview, Ms Rao recalled that the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had declared that her son died by suicide. However, when they asked her if she feels he could have killed himself and if he was depressed recently, she told them “My son celebrated his birthday a day before he died. What more do we need to give on account that he was in a happy mood?” She added that he had even received his birthday gift from his father the same day he was later found dead.

Making a grave allegation against OpenAI, Ms Rao said on record that “My son had documents against OpenAI. They attacked him and killed him,” adding that “some documents were missing” after his death.

She further accused the ChatGPT maker of hushing up the investigation and any possible witnesses, saying “Everybody is suppressed, nobody is ready to come up and tell the truth. Even the attorneys have been made to say that it is a suicide.”

Elon Musk shared Suchir Balaji’s mother’s interview with Tucker Carlson on his X handle, calling it “Extremely concerning”.

Continuing her diatribe against OpenAI, Suchir Balaji’s mother accused the authorities of an unconvincing response and a botched up investigation, saying “It took them (authorities) more than 14 minutes to determine the cause of death and tell me that it was a suicide.”

She even slammed the police for holding on to information and not being transparent about it. “I knew that my son was dead by looking at the white van,” she said, adding that the cops kept making excuses to delay the information. “In the evening, they returned the keys to me and told me that I could pick up the body tomorrow,” she said.

In an earlier post on social media platform X, the mother had said that Suchir Balaji’s “apartment was ransacked” and there was apparently a “sign of struggle in the bathroom”. She also claimed that there were bloodstains which were found. “Someone hit him in bathroom. There were blood spots,” she said, concluding that “It was cold blooded murder declared by authorities as suicide.”

Suchir Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years. He resigned in August, 2023 after expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s shift to a for-profit model. According to his mother, this shift was a key factor in his decision to leave and turn whistleblower. He had even given an interview to the New York Times raising concerns over the ChatGpt maker.

The San Francisco Police Department has reportedly reopened the case as an “active investigation,” but it has not shared further details. Meanwhile, Suchir Balaji’s parents have said, “We demand the FBI step in to uncover the truth.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was delivering his final comments to the media prior to the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, addressing reporters on the status on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire that is expected to halt the Gaza war, at least temporarily. During his speech, two reporters were removed as they interrupted Blinken’s comments to scream about the situation in Gaza.

  • Airfares Sky High, Railways To Run Two Special Trains For Coldplay Concert

Airfares Sky High, Railways To Run Two Special Trains For Coldplay Concert

Two special trains being run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on January 25 and 26 by Western Railway are set to provide relief for those wanting to attend concerts of renowned rock band Coldplay amid skyrocketing airfares between the two cities.

An official on Thursday said though the two trains are “winter specials” as per the directive of the Railway Board, these are being operated to clear the extra rush of passengers in view of the Coldplay concerts on January 25 and 26 at Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat.

“Both the trains will depart from Bandra Terminus at 6:15am and reach Ahmedabad at 2pm on January 25 and 26. On the return leg, the trains will leave from Ahmedabad the next day at 1:40am and arrive at Bandra Terminus at 8:40am. These trains will halt at Borivali, Vapi, Udhna, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara and Gertapur in both directions,” the official said.

Other officials said airfares have soared between the metropolis and Gujarat’s largest city due to the concerts, while trains on the route are also full.

Even these two ‘winter specials’ might not be sufficient if the popularity of Coldplay and the past experience of the railways with the cricket world cup were anything to go by, these officials pointed out.

For the Coldplay concerts to be held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18, 19 and 21, the organisers have booked Full Tariff Rate (FTR) suburban locals for the attendees.
