The executive order was signed on January 20, 2025, and proposed that children born in the U.S. would no longer automatically receive citizenship if their parents were undocumented or present on temporary visas, unless at least one parent was a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. This policy change was set to take effect on February 19, 2025, but has now been halted pending further legal review.
