Farmers told to procure bills of sale from seed sellers in the Nilgiris

The Deputy Director of Seed Inspection, Coimbatore, operating under the Directorate of Seed Certification has cautioned farmers to mandatorily procure bills of sale from seed sellers.

In a press release, Deputy Director S. Revathi said that farmers in Coonoor, Kotagiri, Udhagamandalam and Gudalur were known for growing quality mountain vegetables, also known as “English vegetables.” As the sowing season was about to begin shortly, many farmers were preparing to purchase carrot, beetroot, potato as well as other seeds for sowing. They were urged to procure the seeds from certified shops and dealers.

They were also discouraged from purchasing any seeds from shops that were not certified. When purchasing the seeds, the farmers were also urged to inquire about the suitability of the seeds for growing them in prevailing weather and soil conditions and to ask for bills of sale from the sellers. The bills should have the name of the seeds, variety, batch numbers and expiry dates clearly mentioned, the press release added.

Carrot and beetroot farmers were urged to consult their local officials from the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops when purchasing the seeds. Any middle-men selling seeds without certification, or indulging in seed hoarding would face action under the Seed Control Order, 1983, Seeds Act, 1966 and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, the press release added.

Shops selling seeds must clearly indicate the cost of the seeds and available quantities to the public. Seeds should be made available to farmers without any hindrances, while seeds should also be stored correctly. Any complaints about deviance from the established rules can be reported to the seed inspector via phone at 8105549018, it was stated.
