Gaya: The Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) has reinforced the ban on plastic items within the premises of the world heritage Mahabodhi Mahavihara. A notification in this regard was issued by BTMC secretary Mahashweta Maharathi on Thursday.
The notification, a copy of which has been sent to the Mahavihara security in-charge, heads of all temples, monasteries and institutions, hotel associations, tour and travel operators and the tourist guides’ association in Bodh Gaya, states, “BTMC has decided to reinforce the earlier decision to strictly ban the entry and use of polythene bags, plastic-wrapped biscuits, chips and all plastic items inside the premises of Mahavihara with immediate effect.”
“As an alternative, all are requested to use environmentally friendly paper and cloth bags, bamboo baskets, terracotta bowls and handmade snacks for offerings, in the interest of keeping the Mahavihara premises clean and free from waste management issues,” she added.
To enforce the ban, the BTMC secretary has asked security personnel to ensure that no visitor enters the Mahavihara with prohibited items beyond the security checkpoints. She has also urged visitors to comply with the restrictions and assist in their strict implementation.
The BTMC administration has taken initiatives such as installing solar panels at the Mahavihara and its office to promote the use of green energy.
During the tourist season, from Oct to March, thousands of tourists and devotees visit the Mahavihara. Devotees participate in the annual Buddhist events held under the sacred Bodhi tree. On many occasions, they carry plastic water bottles, biscuits or snacks packed in plastic, which will now be prohibited.
