The Trump administration wants to bring down the US trade deficit with India and hopes to have a fair bilateral trade deal with New Delhi in place in 2025, Trump administration officials said ahead of a summit between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

Donald Trump, on Elon Musk’s meeting with PM Modi, said, “They met. I assume he wants to do business in India. But India is a very hard place to do business in because of the tariffs. They have the highest tariffs”.

Us President Donald Trump, before a bilateral meeting with PM Modi, announced reciprocal tariffs and said, “…Traditionally, India is right at the top of the pack pretty much. There are a couple of smaller countries that are actually more but India charges tremendous tariffs. I remember when Harley Davidson couldn’t sell their motorbikes in India because of the fact that in India – the tax was so high, the tariff was so high.:

” I think they built a factory in India in order to avoid paying the tariffs. And that’s what people can do with us. They can build a factory here, a plant or whatever it may be here and that includes the medical, that includes cars, that includes chips and semiconductors,” he said.

During a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed India’s reforms, including furthering ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’.

US President Donald Trump complained that the European Union was “absolutely brutal” in its trade relations with the United States.

US President Donald Trump inked plans Thursday for sweeping “reciprocal tariffs” hitting both allies and competitors, in a dramatic escalation of an international trade war that economists warn could fuel inflation at home.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he had decided to impose the reciprocal duties, telling reporters that US allies were often “worse than our enemies” on trade issues.

The levies would be tailored to each US trading partner and consider non-tariff factors including value-added tax (VAT).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk discussed strengthening collaboration between Indian and US entities in innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development, sources told NDTV. 

Their discussion also touched on opportunities to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and good governance.

Sources told NDTV that discussion between the Prime Minister and MR Waltz “touched upon ways to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with a focus on strategic technologies, as well as defense industrial cooperation and civil nuclear energy with an emphasis on small modular reactors, and counterterrorism.”

They also discussed international and regional issues of mutual interest.

PM Modi met Indian-American billionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in Washington after he met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk at Blair House.

The Prime Minister will later go to the White House to meet US President Donald Trump. Tariffs, US-India defence deals, and immigration issues are expected to be a part of the Prime Minister’s meeting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla CEO and the US’ Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief, Elon Musk, at the Blair House ahead of his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.

PM Modi met US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz in Washington DC today. He will be meeting Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy later during the day before his meeting President Donald Trump.

Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi will aim to build on defence sales to ensure they prioritize US technology and the two sides are moving toward signing a new defence framework.

Donald Trump will hold a press conference at 11.30 pm IST tonight, and he may announce new reciprocal tariffs. This comes hours before he is slated to meet Prime Minister Modi in White House.

This time, the tariff issue will be front and center, said Richard Rossow, head of the India program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. “It’s going to be a boxing match,” he said. “I think India is willing to take a few hits, but there’s a limit.”

During Donald Trump’s first term as US President, he and PM Modi shared an amicable bond, exchanging hugs and compliments. While the US gave a rousing welcome to PM Modi at a 2019 event in Texas, Trump’s Ahmedabad visit in 2020 too saw great fanfare.

Known to have shared perceptions of China and radical Islam, and their leaderships styles characteristic of strongmanship and economic nationalism, a stream of compliments have often figured in their comments about each other. While Trump once called Modi the “nicest human”, Modi has called the US President his “dear friend”.

Will this camaraderie help during the talks between the leaders, as India looks to find a middle-ground with the US after Trump’s hardline stance on trade and immigration?

The prime minister’s visit to the American capital comes days after the Trump administration deported 104 Indians in handcuffs and shackles on a military aircraft that sparked outrage in India.
