A man from Kotagiri was arrested by the Nilgiris district police on Monday after he defrauded residents of the district by falsely claiming that he worked for the Kotagiri panchayat and that he could get them government jobs.
The scam came to light during the weekly grievances redress meeting held at the district collectorate on Monday, when one of the people who fell victim to the scam approached the District Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru. He told her that the man from Horasholai near Kotagiri, identified as Mano, had alleged that he worked as the Assistant Director of Kotagiri panchayat and that he could get people government jobs in exchange for money.
The Collector informed the Nilgiris District Superintendent of Police, N.S. Nisha, about the alleged scam and asked her to investigate. The inquiry was led by a DSP of the Nilgiris police. During investigations, they learned that the accused took ₹5 lakh from the complainant, claiming that he could get a job for his son.
He had also forged identity cards and appointment letters issued by the government. The police also learnt that the man had defrauded 10 other victims out of a total of ₹ 51 lakh in cash. The District Crime Branch police have registered a case against Mano and have arrested him, the police said.
The Nilgiris district administration appealed to local residents to not fall victim to such claims made by potential scammers and urged people to report such incidents through telephone to the police in the mentioned phone numbers – 97898-00100 and 94981-01260.
