SHRC recommends ₹5 lakh compensation for death of woman during delivery

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Thursday recommended that the State government pay a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the husband of a woman who died after giving birth to a male child at primary health centre (PHC) in Mambakkam in August 2019.

The SHRC had taken suo motu cognisance of a report that month, which cited a complaint from the husband that a nurse and an ambulance driver had conducted the delivery. The woman suffered severe loss of blood and was taken to the Government Hospital at Arni, where she was declared brought dead. The Commission had sought a detailed report from the authorities concerned on the incident.

After going through the detailed report from the authorities, including the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, the Commissioni on Thursday said that it was categorically established that the patient, Jamuna, was admitted in time to the PHC but the treatment given to her by the nurse against medical ethics.

SHRC member V. Kannadasan also recommended that the State government issue directions to the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine to ensure round-the-clock availability of doctors at PHCs, especially to attend to pregnant women, and 108 ambulances in areas around PHCs.
