Based on a plea alleging lack of solid waste management facilities in Kollancode Municipality in Kanniyakumari district, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for a report from authorities.
SHRC member V. Kannadasan sought the report from Kanniyakumari Collector, Director of Municipal Administration, and Regional Director of Municipal Administration within three weeks.
Complainant S. Sadish of Kanjampuram, in his plea, alleged that 33 wards of Kollancode Municipality lacked solid waste management facilities though several habitations, markers, restaurants, wedding halls, places of worship, and educational institutions, among others, were in the area.
The Municipality has not arranged for facilities for solid waste management and several pleas in this regard did not yield results, the complainant alleged, adding that though citizens paid tax for solid waste management, there has not been a single area in 33 wards where garbage could be disposed.
