Three persons arrested for selling fake gold biscuits in Arani

Three persons were arrested on Thursday for selling 10 pieces of fake gold biscuits, which weighs around 10 grams, to a drama artist at a new bus terminus in Arani town in Tiruvannamalai a few days ago.

Police said the arrested persons were identified as Shagul Hameed, 67, a native of Nagapattinam, Zakir Hussain, 51, and Ayub Khan, 48, residents in Vellore.

Initial inquiry revealed that victim K. Loganathan (63), a local drama artist, came to the bus terminus in Arani town to board a bus to his daughter’s house in Sennananthal village on March 7. He was intercepted by the gang, requesting him to arrange a tourist van on rental basis for business purposes.

The gang promised to give Loganathan a decent commission for the work. After convincing him, the gang pleaded that they cannot pay him in cash. Instead, they have only gold biscuits, which have high market value.

Loganathan believed their words and purchased 10 pieces of fake gold biscuits. In return, he gave two sovereigns of gold ring and Rs 8,500 cash to the gang. When he checked with a local pawn broker, Loganathan found the gold biscuits were fake. Based on a complaint by him, Arani Town police arrested the gang in Vellore. A case was registered. The gang was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
