Bollywood actor Samir Soni has publicly criticized social media influencer Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry, for allegedly consuming alcohol near the revered Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu, calling it a “crime” and a reflection of troubling cultural shifts. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, led to an FIR being filed against Orry and seven others, including a Russian national, for violating local laws that strictly prohibit liquor and non-vegetarian food in the area to preserve the shrine’s sanctity.

Samir Soni’s Strong Condemnation
Speaking exclusively to Republic India, Samir expressed his dismay, stating, “This looks like a very innocuous thing—so what if he does that? But if you dig deeper, it is wrong on so many levels. It’s wrong in the sense that you are committing a crime—you are drinking where you are not supposed to.” He spoke about the insensitivity of Orry’s actions, adding, “You are being insensitive by drinking in a place like Vaishno Devi, where people walk for miles to reach the temple. It is incredibly irresponsible, and you are gloating about it as if you have done something good. And then you call yourself an influencer? It’s a reflection of the society we live in—where, at the cost of gaining more likes and views, you can talk rubbish if you want. The more absurd you are, the language used, and you consider it ‘cool.’ That is what worries me.”
Concerns for Cultural Values and the Next Generation
Samir’s concerns extend beyond the act itself, touching on broader cultural implications. As a father to his 12-year-old daughter, Ahana Soni, he questioned the impact of such behavior on younger generations. “If she listens to all this, I wonder—what is happening to our culture and our people? I feel as a generation, we have failed, and we have also failed to stop such people and tell them that it is not cool to use abusive language or crack these kinds of jokes,” he added.
While the controversy continues to unfold, Orry, who is typically very active on social media, has remained conspicuously silent since the incident came to light. Several Bollywood celebrities, including those often associated with Orry like Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday, and Sara Ali Khan, have yet to comment on the matter.
The FIR against Orry and his group was filed after a complaint highlighted their alleged consumption of alcohol at a hotel in Katra, the base camp for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.
