Patna: A notorious criminal, carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh, was arrested along with three of his associates after an intense encounter with the police under Naubatpur police station area of Patna district in the wee hours of Sunday.
Police received information that Bharat Singh alias Chandrashekhar, wanted in several criminal cases in Patna and Bhojpur districts, was hiding in Sheikhpura village along with his associates. Acting on the tip-off, a special police team from Patna reached the village to conduct a raid around 11pm on Saturday. The criminals started firing as soon as they saw the police, and in retaliation, the police also fired and nabbed the miscreants. Around 8-10 shots were fired from both sides. The other arrested individuals include Rohit Kumar Ram, wanted for a double murder, Suraj Kumar, and Shivam Kumar, said a police officer.
Three country-made pistols, a gun, a country-made carbine, 16 live cartridges of 7.62×25 MM, four live cartridges of 9 MM, five empty bullet casings, ten live cartridges of 315 bore, three pistol magazines, two carbine magazines, four routers (dongles) with SIM cards, six cellphones, and five phone chargers were recovered from their possession.
Superintendent of police (Patna West) Sharath RS told the media persons on Sunday that Bharat, who hails from Sheikhpura village is on the Patna’s top 10 list and has a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on his head, with a proposal for an additional Rs 3 lakh reward. The operation was led by Deepak Kumar, sub-divisional police officer II of Phulwarisharif, and SHO Rajneesh of Naubatpur, he said.
The SP said that the team conducted continuous raids based on technical inputs, and on Saturday evening, they learned of Bharat’s presence in Naubatpur. “After verifying the information, a raid was conducted, resulting in Bharat’s arrest along with his three associates. During the raid, the criminals fired at the police, who returned fire in self-defence. No one sustained any injuries in the encounter,” Sharath said.
Bharat is the brother of the district’s top notorious criminal Jatha alias Kala Nag. Jatha was murdered two years ago. After his murder, Bharat was running the gang. There are 13 cases registered against him for murder, robbery, extortion, and Arms Act violations.
Earlier on March 21, there was an encounter between the police and criminals in the Maner police station area, in which Dahi Gop’s main shooter and notorious criminal Sonu Kumar was shot. He was undergoing treatment in the police custody.
