Ara: Bhojpur SP Raj has asked all SHOs in the district to ensure strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, which prohibits underage driving. Under Section 199A, guardians and vehicle owners who allow minors to drive can face hefty fines or imprisonment. As a deterrent, police on Thursday evening fined a 16-year-old bike rider Rs 25,000 in the KG Road locality under Nawada police station.
“The police patrol team spotted a minor school-going boy riding a bike on KG Road. As per Bihar traffic rules, underage driving attracts a Rs 25,000 fine. The boy was asked to comply and he duly deposited the fine at the district transport office (DTO),” Nawada SHO Vipin Bihari said.
He added, “This penalty will deter other underage drivers in the district. We have noticed an alarming rise in minors driving bikes and other vehicles, leading to frequent accidents. However, when we take action, the public sympathises with them due to their age. The SP has instructed us to show no leniency as underage drivers pose a serious risk to themselves and others.”
To raise awareness, the Bhojpur SP has issued a detailed list of traffic fines under Bihar’s traffic rules. The highest fine –Rs 25,000 – is for underage driving. Rash driving, using a phone while driving, and driving without a licence incur Rs 5,000 fines. Offences like driving without insurance, flouting govt orders or overspeeding light motor vehicles attract Rs 2,000 penalties. Riding without a helmet or seatbelt, triple-riding on bikes and similar violations result in Rs 1,000 fines while parking violations, missing number plates and using dark window tints on four-wheelers incur Rs 500 fines.
