Shah Rukh Khan pays respects to Manoj Kumar in a heartfelt note: “Made films that uplifted our country”

The Indian film industry is reeling from the loss of veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away on Friday at the age of 87. Among the many voices honoring his legacy, Shah Rukh Khan shared a touching tribute on X, celebrating Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to cinema. “Manoj Kumar ji made films that uplifted our country, our cinema, and focused on unity with unmatched sincerity. A legend in every sense. His films shaped an era and left a mark on our cinema. Thank you, sir. You will always be ‘Bharat’ to us,” Shah Rukh wrote.

A Cinematic Giant’s Farewell

Manoj Kumar, fondly dubbed ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic fervor, breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after battling age-related health issues. His death marks the end of an era defined by films like Upkar, Shaheed, and Purab Aur Paschim, which blended entertainment with messages of national pride.

Shah Rukh’s tribute carries added weight given their past tensions. Back in 2007, Manoj Kumar had taken issue with a scene in Shah Rukh’s Om Shanti Om, where the superstar’s character, Om Prakash Makhija, sneaks into a premiere using Kumar’s pass—a comedic jab at the veteran’s signature hand-over-face gesture. Kumar found it disrespectful and pursued legal action, seeking Rs 100 crore in damages when the unedited version resurfaced in Japan in 2013. Though he eventually dropped the case, the episode left a mark.

Previously, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar, among others, paid tribute to the late actor. Besides members of film fraternity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of India, Droupadi Murmu, had also extended their heartfelt condolences on social media.
