A second-year student, Abhinav Panday, at IGIMS tragically died following a road accident, sparking student protests
NEW DELHI: A second-year student at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna, Abhinav Panday, died early Thursday morning after suffering injuries in a road accident. The incident has led to student protests, with claims that the college did not provide timely medical help. According to students, Abhinav sustained injuries three days earlier when his motorbike hit a road divider. Upon returning to the campus, he was allegedly denied admission to the IGIMS hospital, prompting his peers to take him to Paras Hospital. “When he returned to college injured, he was not provided a bed. So, we took him to Paras Hospital. His condition was fine the first day, but it started deteriorating the next day. He then died at the hospital,” one student said to media. Students also claimed that when they approached the college for help with an ambulance and reimbursement at around 2:30 am, the college director arrived late and behaved rudely. They added that IGIMS later agreed to allot a bed to Abhinav, but by that time, his condition was too serious to move him from Paras Hospital. Since then, IGIMS students have been protesting, demanding better medical services and accountability from the administration. “We demand better medical facilities so that not only students but everyone can be provided improved medication and care,” a student said to media.
