  • Himachal weather update: IMD predicts heavy rainfall in several districts from April 18, check full forecast

Himachal Pradesh weather update: The weather office also stated that a strong western disturbance is expected to impact the state, resulting in light to moderate rainfall in most regions and heavy rainfall in higher altitudes.

    Shimla:

The Meteorological Department on Wednesday predicted heavy rainfall in various parts of Himachal Pradesh between April 18 and April 21 and said there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts on April 18 and 19.

The weather office also stated that a strong western disturbance is expected to impact the state, resulting in light to moderate rainfall in most regions and heavy rainfall in higher altitudes.

Speaking to ANI, Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the IMD’s Himachal Pradesh Centre in Shimla, said that the weather will change after two days with the approaching fresh Western disturbance on April 18.

“In the next 48 hours, the weather will remain mostly clear across the state. However, a very active western disturbance is expected to influence Himachal Pradesh from the afternoon of April 18 until the morning of April 21. Due to this system, we are likely to see intermittent rainfall across many parts of the state,” said Katiyar.

He added that light rain may occur today in Chamba and Kangra districts, but the main spell of rainfall will begin from April 18.

“There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the higher regions of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts on April 18 and 19. Some areas may receive rainfall between 6 to 12 cm. Because of this, we have issued an orange alert for these districts for April 18 and 19,” Katiyar further explained. Talking about the temperatures, he said that the temperatures will also decrease after the 18th in the region.

“Currently, daytime temperatures in most places are within the normal range, though a few areas are recording 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal. However, during the upcoming rain spell from April 18 to 21, we expect a significant drop in temperature, around 5 to 7 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state,” he added.

Commenting on the rainfall deficit in April so far, Katiyar said that there has been a deficit of rain in the month of April.

“Till April 15, Himachal Pradesh has received only 10 mm of rainfall, while the average for this period should be around 35 mm. That’s a deficit of nearly 70 per cent. However, this active Western Disturbance is expected to bring significant rainfall over the next few days, which will help bridge the deficit,” he said.

  • Waqf Act: Will Muslims be there on Hindu boards to violence can’t be used to pressurise, who said what in SC

SC told Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta that as far as Waqf-by-user is concerned, it’s difficult to register. You have a point; it is misused, but you cannot say there is no genuine Waqf by the user. CJI asks the Solicitor General how the government will register such ‘Waqfs-by-user’.

    New Delhi:

During the hearing of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 on Wednesday (April 16), the Supreme Court of India today asked the Central government whether Muslims will be allowed to be part of Hindu religious ‘trusts’. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, on how ‘waqf by user’ can be disallowed, as many will not have the requisite documents to get such waqfs registered.

As per details, no interim order has been passed, and the Supreme Court will hear this matter on Thursday (April 17) at 2:00 pm after a request from the respondents. Also, no notice has been issued in this regard.

Who said what inside the court? | Check full details here

CJI Sanjiv Khanna: We made it very clear who has filed the petitions and removed objections before 11:00 am on Wednesday (April 16), we will hear. Even in Hindu, the State has enacted the law. Parliament has enacted law for Muslims also. All ancient monuments, including Jama Masjid will remain protected. The legislature cannot declare any judgment or decree of court as void, you can remove the basis of law but you cannot declare any judgment or declare as not binding. Normally, two rules apply. courts do not pass interim order, except in exception. our concern is if waqf by user is denotified, there will be huge consequences. One thing is very disturbing: the ‘violence’. The issue is before the Court, and we will decide.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta: What is presented is not correct statutory scheme. I am Hindu, I create trust, I say all trustee will be Hindu. administration will be with charity commissioner. In Islamic law, it is dedicated to Allah for charitable purpose. there has to be a waqif who settles the trust, he would say it will be governed by Mutawali. Right by 1923, registration of waqf is mandatory- statutorily. even waqf by user cannot be unregistered. It was followed in 1995, where also, the waqf registration is mandatory. Mr Sibal points Mutawali will go to jail, he is going to jail since 1995.  I don’t know why those words have come. Ignore that part. There is a large section of Muslims who dont; want to be governed by Muslim Board. If a Muslim wants to do charity, he can do that through a Trust. Without I am assisting mylords with judgments…the boards tenure has not been made…all are public interest litigants, there is no Board or waqf before Mylords. There shouldn’t be a phenomenon that violence can be used to ‘pressurise’.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal: My submission upfront, what is sought through Parliamentary legislation is to interfere with the essential and integral part of faith. Referring to Article 25 and 26. If I want to set up waqf, I have to show I am practising Islam for 5 years. If I am born Muslim, why would I do that? My personal law will apply. S.3(A)(2)- create of waqf-alal-aulad shall not deny inherit to women. Who is the state to say about this? The inheritance in Islam happens after death, they are interfering before that. Central Waqf Council, under 1995, all nominees were Muslim. I have chart, all Hindu or Sikh endowments, the nominees are Hindu or Sikhs- its a direct violation. It is a parliamentary usurpation of 200 million. What is more Article 32 than reading Articles 25 and 26. This is not the case where Mylords should send us to the High Court. CEO has to be ‘Muslim’.

Senior Advocate Harish Salve: The challenge survives [to 1995 Act]. Your Lordship can decide whole matter, there is one pending before this Court. Both sides of the picture are there and mylords may decide finally. There is no need to call High Court petitions.

Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan: The basis of constitutional attack is, waqf is essential and integral to Islam. Religion, particularly, charity, is essential and integral part of Islam. Other aspects, i adopt Sibal’s argument. Earlier, CEO had to be Muslims, no longer its there.

Senior Advocate CU Singh: Please see Article 26, I am deviating from essential religious argument, its not important here. Please see the distinction draw- religious and charitable purposes, it does not have to answer the question of religious essential practice. Mylords, can hear us tomorrow (April 17).

Advocate Sanjay Hedge: You are from Punjab, you would know Amritsar was in non-Sikh control and it required a whole Akali Dal movement.

Senior Advocate Rajeev Shakdher: Originally Article 31 was removed, when can they tinker with the property? subject to morality, health, etc. they need probation period of 5 years to certify someone as Muslim.

Justice Viswanathan: Don’t mix, properties can be secular. Only administration of property can fall for, don’t repeatedly say essential religious practice. Don’t give trust example, the most likely would be the Hindu endowments, it is the Hindu community administering it. Read sub-section 9, appeal to the High Court.

    What is ‘waqf by user’?

It refers to a practice where a property is recognised as a religious or charitable endowment (‘waqf’) based on its long-term, uninterrupted use for such purposes, even if there is not a formal, written declaration of waqf by the owner.

  • Waqf Act: SC says undoing ‘waqf by user’ will have consequences, adds ‘you cannot undo the past’ | 10 points

Waqf Act: The Supreme Court proposed to pass an order that properties declared as waqf including ‘waqf by user’ will not denotified. Centre opposed it and sought a further hearing.

    New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday started a hearing on a bunch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and during the hearing of the matter, the apex court told Centre, ‘You cannot undo the past’.

During the hearing of the matter, Justice Khanna stated that when a public trust was declared Waqf 100 or 200 years ago and suddenly you say it is being taken over by the Waqf Board and declared otherwise, Mehra intervened and said that it means if one has a Waqf, it can be made into a trust, and there is an enabling provision for it. To this, Chief Justice remarked, “You cannot rewrite the past!”

Check the top 10 developments of the hearing in the Supreme Court:

    1. The Supreme Court asked the Centre how ‘waqfs-by-user’ would be registered, as there may be a lack of documents.
    2. The Supreme Court also told the Solicitor General that if waqf-by-user properties are denotified, it will be an issue.
    3. The apex court observed that any property declared waqf or any property declared waqf by the user or declared by the court shall not be de-notified.
    4. The CJI asked the Solicitor General about how the government will register such waqfs-by-user and what documents they will have. “It will lead to undoing something. Yes, there is some misuse, but there are genuine ones, also. If you undo it, then it will be a problem,” the court said.
    5. The Supreme Court also expressed concern over violence taking place over the Waqf (Amendment) Act. “The one thing that is very disturbing is the violence that is taking place. The issue is before the court, and we will decide,” the CJI said.
    6. The Supreme Court said it will continue its hearing on Thursday on a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
    7. The Centre recently notified the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which got the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on April 5 after its passage from Parliament following heated debates in both houses.
    8. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. It was cleared by the Lok Sabha with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.
    9. As many as 72 petitions, including those by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and Congress MPs Imran Pratapgarhi and Mohammad Jawed, have been filed challenging the validity of the Act.
    10. The Centre, on April 8, filed a caveat in the apex court and sought a hearing before any order was passed in the matter. A caveat was filed by a party in the high courts and the apex court to ensure that no orders are passed without hearing it.

  • Infinix Note 40 Series Confirmed to Get Android 15-Based XOS 15 Update in This Quarter

Infinix has announced that its Android 15-based XOS 15 update will be available for Infinix Note 40 series soon. The Chinese tech brand unveiled its version of custom Android 15-based OS last month. Notably, the Infinix Note 50 series smartphones were the first handsets to ship with XOS 15. The update includes several new features, including Dynamic Bar for showing alerts and notifications, Vogue Portraits for personalising home screen wallpaper and AI assistant Folax.

The Transsion Holdings subsidiary, via its global X handle, announced the official rollout of XOS 15 on Wednesday. As per the post, the Infinix Note 40 series will gradually support the new XOS 15 user interface based on Andorid 15 starting this quarter (Q2). Models including Infinix Note 40 Pro+ 5G, Note 40 Pro 5G, Note 40 Pro, Note 40 5G, Note 40, and Note 40s are confirmed to receive the XOS 15 update.

The stable update will be rolled out in batches, so it is likely to take some time for it to reach all eligible smartphones. Infinix confirmed that the specific upgrade times for each model will be announced later with a few countries said to not support this update.

All models in the Infinix Note 40 series were launched with Android 14-based XOS 14 user interface. The brand released its XOS 15 interface last month. The Infinix Note 50X 5G, which launched in March, was the first device to run XOS 15 out of the box in India. The Infinix Note 50s 5G+, which is scheduled to go official later this week, is also confirmed to ship with this new custom skin.

The XOS 15 offers a revamped user interface with customisable animations and font styles. It has a Game Mode for optimising gaming performance and settings, and a Vogue Portraits functionality for customising wallpapers. The update includes a Dynamic Bar feature with support for Google Maps, Smart Panel, and PC Connection. It comes with the One-Tap Infinix AI functionality and offers several AI-based features like On-Screen Awareness, AI Wallpaper Generator, AI Note, Circle to Search, Writing Assistant and Infinix’s AI assistant, Folax. There is also a new AIGC Portrait Mode that enables users to create their fun avatars in multiple scenarios and templates in real time.

  • Anthropic Is Reportedly Working on a Voice Mode Feature for Claude

Anthropic Is Reportedly Working on a Voice Mode Feature for Claude

Anthropic is reportedly working on a voice chat feature for its in-house artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Claude. According to the report, the AI firm is planning to launch the feature, dubbed ‘voice mode’, as soon as this month. While rivals such as OpenAI and Google have already added a dedicated voice mode in their chatbots, ChatGPT and Gemini, Anthropic has so far only focused on the text interface. The report comes just weeks after the AI firm released a new education plan, similar to OpenAI’s Edu subscription.

Claude to Reportedly Get a Voice Mode

According to a Bloomberg report, the San Francisco-based AI firm is gearing up for the launch of the new voice mode feature. Citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter, the publication claimed that the rollout of the feature could begin in April itself. The feature will be first available to a small subset of users. These plans could change, however.

Anthropic is reportedly planning to add three different voices to the feature that would be named Airy, Mellow, and Buttery. The latter is said to carry a British accent. Notably, the publication claimed that an app researcher who goes by the name “M1Astra” spotted the evidence of this in Claude’s iOS app’s code and shared it with the publication. No other details are known at this time.

While the report mentions the voice mode, it is unclear whether it will be a basic text-to-speech feature or if the AI voice will be human-like, similar to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. It is also not known whether the feature will be available to all users or if it will be reserved for the paid subscribers. The three voices likely differ in pitch, timbre, and intonation.

Anthropic is late to the voice chatbot party. In the last year, major AI-focused companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and even Apple have announced or released voice-based conversation features. Meta is also reportedly working on introducing a two-way voice chat mode in Meta AI.

However, Anthropic has not been idly waiting. The company has released several new features in 2025. Last month, the company’s researchers published a paper making breakthroughs in the thinking process of AI models. The AI firm also added the web search feature in Claude, and released the Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model with reasoning capabilities.

  • Android Smartphones Get Auto-Restart Security Feature With Latest Google Play Services Update

Android Smartphones Get Auto-Restart Security Feature With Latest Google Play Services Update

Google is rolling out a new security feature to Android smartphones that will automatically restart a user’s handset if it hasn’t been unlocked for a three-day period. This feature is designed to secure the data on a smartphone, preventing unauthorised access. The feature is also expected to be available on Android tablets. Apple rolled out a similar ‘Inactivity Reboot’ feature with iOS 18.1 in October 2024, which reboots an iPhone if it is left unattended for a 72-hour period.

Rebooting Android Phones to Protect Data From Unauthorised Access

The latest Google Play services v25.14 update that began rolling out on Monday includes a new feature that will reboot an Android smartphone automatically if it has been locked “for 3 consecutive days”. This means that if you haven’t unlocked your handset for a 72-hour period, it will automatically restart and you will be prompted to enter your passcode when you pick up your smartphone again.

When a smartphone is rebooted, all user data on the handset is encrypted and biometrics are disabled until a user enters their passcode. This is called the Before First Unlock (BFU) state, which prevents unauthorised access to user data. Once the passcode is entered, the user data is decrypted and biometric unlocking is enabled, and the device enters the After First Unlock (AFU) state.

By automatically rebooting an Android smartphone if it is left unattended for three days, Google can protect user data from being accessed by unauthorised parties, including thieves. BFU is enabled whenever a phone is rebooted, so a simple restart can help safeguard user information.

While Google’s changelog mentions the automatic restart feature is available for “Phone”, the same feature is likely to arrive on Android tablets. Google’s changelog also mentions that this will be an optional feature, which suggests that there might be a toggle to disable the feature.

A similar automatic restart feature was recently introduced by Apple with the iOS 18.1 update. If an iPhone running on iOS 18.1 or newer is left unattended for 72 hours, the handset will reboot to safeguard user data. The feature was discovered after smartphones seized by law enforcement rebooted on their own, thanks to the new ‘Inactivity Reboot’ feature.

Trump Ordered Musk Briefing Cancelled Over China Concerns: Report
According to Axios, President Trump personally intervened to cancel a planned top-secret Pentagon briefing on China that was scheduled for Elon Musk. The move came after a leak about the meeting triggered internal tensions within the administration.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly suspended two senior Pentagon officials, Dan Caldwell and Darin Selnick, amid an investigation into the leak. A senior official cited by Axios quoted Trump as saying, “What the f**k is Elon doing there? Make sure he doesn’t go.” The report suggests that Trump was concerned about perceived conflicts of interest due to Musk’s deep business ties with China.

While administration sources told Axios that “POTUS still very much loves Elon, but there are some red lines,” the incident reportedly highlighted growing discomfort over Musk’s frequent visits to the White House and his unpredictable social media activity.

The New York Times first reported on March 20 that Musk was scheduled for a China-related Pentagon briefing the next day. Hours later, Trump dismissed the report on Truth Social, calling it “Fake News” and “completely untrue!!!”

However, Axios claims the cancellation had already been set in motion prior to that post.
