  • Lokayukta seeks detailed report on alleged irregularities in Urban Development Department

The Karnataka Lokayukta has directed the Urban Development Department (UDD) to submit a detailed report on alleged irregularities related to postings in the Directorate of Municipal Administration, despite a vacancy rate of nearly 50%.

According to the order, the Lokayukta has instructed a probe into the allegations and demanded a comprehensive report. The directive follows a complaint filed by social activist Jagadish M.S., who alleged that despite the high vacancy rate, the department continues to pay salaries to employees who have not yet been assigned postings, resulting in financial loss to the public exchequer.

The complaint further claims that the UDD has disbursed approximately ₹4 crore in salaries to employees on a waiting list without being assigned official duties. Additionally, it alleges that in some cases, junior officers have been posted in positions meant for senior officials, reportedly due to favoritism. This lack of experience, the complaint states, is hampering effective administration.

The Lokayukta’s directive follows a preliminary review of submitted documents, which suggested potential misuse of authority within the department.

  • AIADMK walks out of Assembly objecting to Minister P.K. Sekarbabu’s remarks

Tense moments prevailed in the Assembly for a few minutes on Thursday, after members of the AIADMK and the DMK exchanged angry gestures over certain remarks made by Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) P.K. Sekarbabu.

Eventually, the AIADMK staged a walkout over the issue.

During Mr. Sekarbabu’s reply to the Demand for Grants for the HR and CE Department for 2025-26, AIADMK deputy floor leader R.B. Udhayakumar objected to some remarks. Speaker M. Appavu allowed him to speak.

However, the Minister made certain remarks, which Mr. Udhayakumar and his party members strongly opposed, evoking equal reactions from the DMK members. Some AIADMK members were seen moving beyond the Opposition benches towards the Treasury benches.

The Chair directed the Opposition members to return to their seats. Leader of the House Duraimurugan pacified the members. Mr. Sekarbabu also clarified that his remark was misunderstood.

Though the AIADMK members returned to their seats, Mr. Udhayakumar sought to speak after Mr. Sekarbabu completed his speech.

Since the Chair declined, Mr. Udhayakumar led his party legislators to stage a walkout.

A few religious gurus, including Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar, visited the Assembly and watched the proceedings from the VIP gallery, as the Demand for Grants for the HR and CE Department were taken up on Thursday.

  • No entry fee at ASI monuments on April 18 due to World Heritage Day: Ministry of Culture

World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18th April to honour and protect cultural and natural heritage. Currently, there are 3,698 monuments and heritage sites under ASI protection across the country.

    New Delhi:

In a special initiative to celebrate World Heritage Day, the Ministry of Culture has announced that no entry fee will be charged at monuments protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on April 18. The move is intended to encourage public engagement with India’s rich cultural heritage.

Currently, there are 3,698 monuments and heritage sites under ASI protection across the country. These include some of India’s most renowned landmarks such as the Taj Mahal in Agra, Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, and the ancient ruins of Nalanda University in Bihar.

World Heritage Day on April 18

“By waiving off entry fee, the ASI hopes to promote greater public engagement around the importance of conservation and management of our built heritage and how citizens can play an active role in keeping our heritage preserved,” the Culture Ministry said in an official statement.

World Heritage Day, officially known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, is observed annually on April 18 across the globe. The occasion serves as a reminder of the value of historical structures and the importance of their preservation for future generations.

Reinforcing the importance of this initiative, the ministry noted, “With 3,698 monuments and sites under its protection, the ASI is offering this opportunity to reconnect with the country’s historical legacy and architectural marvels.”

The ministry also highlighted this year’s theme for World Heritage Day—‘Heritage under Threat from Disaster and Conflicts’. The theme seeks to raise awareness about the vulnerability of heritage sites to natural calamities, climate change, human negligence, and conflict-related damage. It aims to educate the public about proactive steps that can be taken to safeguard these sites.

“As per the fundamental duties laid down in the Constitution, it is our collective responsibility to protect these invaluable heritage sites and do our bit to preserve them,” the statement added.

The Culture Ministry expressed hope that the free entry initiative would not only boost footfall at these monuments but also foster a deeper sense of appreciation and responsibility among citizens for India’s cultural and architectural heritage.

  • Dawoodi Bohra delegation meets PM Modi, welcomes ‘Waqf Amendment Act’ | Video

Centre assured the Supreme Court that key provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, including the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards and provisions on de-notifying Waqf properties, will not be given effect to for some time.

    New Delhi:

A delegation from the Dawoodi Bohra community met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (April 17) to express their gratitude for the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, calling it a long-pending demand of the community. They said that it was a long-pending demand of the community. They reposed faith in PM’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’.

    Who are Dawoodi Bohras?

The Dawoodi Bohras are a Muslim community primarily from West India, with members settled in over 40 countries worldwide. The Dawoodi Bohra community traces its heritage to the Fatimid Imams, direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, in Egypt. The Dawoodi Bohras throughout the world are guided by their leader known as the al-dai al-mutlaq (unrestricted missionary), who first operated from Yemen and then, for the last 450 years, from India.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court took note of the Solicitor General’s assurance that no appointments to the Waqf Board or Council will be made until the next hearing. The court also stated that existing Waqf properties, including those registered by the user or declared through notification, will not be identified. The Solicitor General said that the Waqf Act is a considered piece of legislation and that the Centre has received a large number of representations regarding the classification of land as Waqf. He added that staying the entire Act would be a severe step and sought one week to submit a reply.

The Supreme Court stated that it had earlier noted some aspects of the legislation as positive and reiterated that there can be no complete stay of the Act at this stage. The court also said that it does not want the current status to be altered while the matter is under its consideration. The bench reiterated that the objective is to maintain the existing situation without changes while the matter remains under judicial review. Several petitions were filed in the apex court challenging the Act, contending that it was discriminatory towards the Muslim community and violated their fundamental rights. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5 (Saturday), following its passage by Parliament after heated debates in both Houses.

Trump blocked Israeli plan to strike Iran nuclear sites: report

U.S. President Donald Trump scuppered an Israeli plan to strike Iranian nuclear sites, the New York Times reported on Wednesday (April 16, 2025), as Washington attempts to reach a deal to curb Tehran’s weapons program.

The United States and Iran, which have not had diplomatic relations for more than 40 years, are seeking a new nuclear deal after Mr. Trump pulled out of a landmark agreement during his first term.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are due to meet in Rome on Saturday (April 17, 2025), a week after they held the highest-level Iranian-U.S. nuclear negotiations since the collapse of a 2015 accord.

In March, Mr. Trump sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urging talks but warning of possible military action if they failed to produce a deal.

Mr. Trump administration officials revealed to the New York Times that Israel had sought Washington’s assistance to carry out an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in May 2025.

According to the Times, the plan and its possible maneuvers were under consideration for months.

But during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House last week, Mr. Trump told the Israelis he would not support an attack. The President instead publicly announced the direct talks with Tehran.

Iran has consistently denied that it is seeking nuclear weapons, but has stepped up its nuclear capacities since Mr. Trump scrapped the 2015 agreement.

The latest International Atomic Energy Agency report noted with “serious concern” that Iran had an estimated 274.8 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, nearing the weapons grade of 90%.

  • Russia blames Ukrainian air defence missiles for destruction of India pharma warehouse in Kyiv

Days after a major warehouse of the Indian pharmaceutical company Kusum Healthcare was destroyed in a missile attack in Ukraine’s capital, the Embassy of Russia in New Delhi has blamed the incident on “Ukrainian air defence missiles”.

In a statement issued on Thursday (April 17, 2025), the embassy also claimed that the Ukrainian armed forces are using civilian infrastructure to hide military equipment like artillery pieces and rocket launchers.

PDP hits back at NC over Article 370, cites ‘deals with BJP’

    Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Peoples Democratic Party hit back Thursday at National Conference (NC) for blaming it over the abrogation of Article 370, accusing the latter of striking secret deals with BJP while defending PDP’s alliance with the saffron party as open and principled.
The row erupted after former RAW chief AS Dulat claimed in his book “The Chief Minister and the Spy” that NC president Farooq Abdullah secretly supported the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, although he publicly denounced it as a betrayal.
J&K CM Omar Abdullah questioned PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s endorsement of Dulat’s forthcoming book, asking if she also accepts what the spymaster wrote about her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in an earlier work.
In his 2015 book “Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years”, Dulat wrote that Sayeed loved his whisky and was once nicknamed “Mufti Whisky”. The RAW ex-chief described Sayeed as a regular bridge player at Delhi Golf Club and recounted how he would always insist on “one small” more, even after a drink.
“If Mehbooba Mufti believes everything Dulat writes is true, then should we also consider what he wrote about her father in his first book as true?” Omar said in Jammu. He accused Dulat of distorting facts to boost book sales. “When we have friends like this, then we don’t need any enemies,” he said.
NC reiterated its stand that the PDP-BJP alliance laid the groundwork for the constitutional change in J&K. The coalition govt was formed on March 1, 2015, and BJP ended the alliance on June 19, 2018.
“Whatever has happened in J&K since 2019 is because of the PDP-BJP alliance,” NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said, doubling down on the party’s narrative that has dominated its election campaigns since 2019.
Mehbooba countered that her party’s alliance with BJP was transparent and aimed at safeguarding Article 370. “Unlike NC’s history of betrayal and secret deals with Delhi since 1947, our alliance was open and based on a promise that Article 370 will be protected,” she said.
Dulat’s revelations underpin suspicions in J&K’s political circles over Abdullah, his son Omar, and NC MP Hasnain Masoodi meeting PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi days before the abrogation.
Mehbooba said Omar had approached Union home minister Amit Shah after the 2014 assembly elections to propose an NC-BJP alliance. “Many BJP politicians told us NC was ready to ally without any agenda while we were negotiating a formal agenda,” she said. “But my father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed insisted on a written agenda that preserved Article 370.”
The PDP-BJP agenda of alliance included a six-year freeze on Article 370 and a commitment to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s “Insaaniyat, Kashmiriyat, Jamhooriyat” doctrine.
PDP’s Waheed Para backed the party’s chief, saying: “Ours was an alliance to bring India and Pakistan closer to save lives in J&K, while NC entered into deals with BJP.”
