  • Supreme Court or ‘Super Parliament’? VP Dhankhar flags judiciary ‘overreach’

NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday issued a sharp rebuke to the judiciary for overstepping its mandate, specifically questioning recent moves to direct the President on legislative matters. He called Article 142 a “nuclear missile” in the judiciary’s arsenal which is “available to the judiciary 24 x 7.”
The Vice President also raised concerns over the handling of the case involving Justice Yashwant Varma, following reports of semi-burnt sacks of cash discovered at the judge’s official residence in Delhi.
“You cannot direct the President. The only authority under the Constitution to interpret the law lies with a bench of five or more judges under Article 145(3),” he said.
Also read: VP takes on SC over deadline for President to decide on Bills
“President being called upon to decide in a time-bound manner, and if not, it becomes law. So we have judges who will legislate, who will perform executive functions, who will act as super Parliament, and absolutely have no accountability because law of the land does not apply to them,” the VP added.
Expressing concern over the perceived erosion of the separation of powers, he added: “The legislature, judiciary, and executive must operate within their domains. Any encroachment by one risks destabilising the entire system.”
“Time has come for our three institutions, Legislature, Judiciary, and Executive, to blossom. And they blossom best when they operate in their own area. Any incursion by one in the domain of the other poses a challenge, which is not good. It can upset the balance,” Dhankhar said.
Speaking at the valedictory event of the 6th Rajya Sabha Internship Programme, Dhankhar questioned the absence of a formal investigation in the Justice Verma case, saying that the rule of law must prevail irrespective of an individual’s position.
“Let me take the incidents that are most recent. They are dominating our minds. An event happened on the night of the 14th and 15th of March in New Delhi, at the residence of a judge. For seven days, no one knew about it. We have to ask questions to ourselves: Is the delay explainable? Condonable? Does it not raise certain fundamental questions? In any ordinary situation–and ordinary situations define rule of law–things would have been different. It was only on 21st March, disclosed by a newspaper, that people of the country were shocked as never before. They were in some kind of limbo, deeply concerned and worried at this explosive, alarming expose,” he said.
Dhankhar criticised the lack of a First Information Report (FIR) in the case, noting that while anyone in India can be booked without prior approval, special permission is required to initiate proceedings against judges.
He pointed out that this is not a constitutional safeguard, stating that immunity under the Constitution is reserved only for the President and Governors.
“An FIR in this country can be registered against anyone–any constitutional functionary, including the one before you. One has only to activate the rule of law. No permission is required. But if it is judges–FIR cannot be straightaway registered. It has to be approved by the concerned in judiciary. But that is not given in the Constitution. The Constitution of India has accorded immunity from prosecution only to the Hon’ble President and the Hon’ble Governors. So how come a category beyond law has secured this immunity? Because the ill-effects of this are being felt in the mind of one and all. Every Indian, young and old, is deeply concerned. If the event had taken place at his house, the speed would have been an electronic rocket. Now, it is not even a cattle cart,” the VP said.

Instagram Blend Feature With Personalised Content Suggestions Launched: How it Works

The blend feature on Instagram (tap to expand)

Instagram says a blend is an invite-only feed that allows users to see a customised feed of Reels via a DM chat. This feed is personalised for each other, based on their activity on Instagram. Users need to invite a friend to join a blend. Once a request is accepted, any Reels sent to the chat will notify users and the blend will be updated.

As part of the feature, users who have joined a blend will see who each Reel is suggested for, even when Reels are sent via DM. While viewing Reels in a blend, users can respond via a message bar at the bottom of the screen, or quickly react with emoji. Users can also see a blend icon in their DMs, which appears at the top of the chat window, next to the audio call and video call buttons.

Gadgets 360 tried out the blend feature on Instagram, and the feature works as advertised. We were able to join a blend after receiving a request, which is delivered as a DM. Tapping the Join button enables the feature for both users, and either member can leave the blend at any time.

  • Microsoft Is Reportedly Testing Copilot for Gaming Xbox Assistant

Microsoft has reportedly begun internally testing Copilot for Gaming, its under-development artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot for Xbox gamers. As per the report, the AI app is currently available to the company’s employees. The Redmond-based tech giant unveiled the Xbox Copilot in March and showcased some of its features. It is expected that once the initial phase of testing is complete, the company will publicly test the AI chatbot with Windows Insiders. Notably, the AI-powered assistant can offer in-game assistance, game tips, and answer user queries about games.

Copilot for Gaming Enters Testing Phase

The Verge reports that Microsoft employees can now access the Copilot for Gaming AI assistant and try out its features. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the publication claimed that the company is testing an early version of the feature within the Xbox mobile app. The assistant is said to be able to access the user’s Xbox account and answer queries based on the data.

The early version of Copilot available to the tech giant’s internal team reportedly comes with several features. Users are said to be able to ask queries about their Xbox achievements, game recommendations, and assistance to clear levels and complete games. The AI assistant can reportedly also download and install games on the Xbox console based on natural language prompts.

This version of Copilot for Gaming is said to support both text and voice as input. The chatbot can also respond via speech, and there are multiple options of voices to choose from, the report claimed. Some of the voice options reportedly include energetic, wise, chill, and heroic. Microsoft is said to be working on adding Copilot characters, an animated version of the chatbot, but it is not available in the version being tested by the company’s employees.

Microsoft is also said to be working to add Copilot Vision to the AI assistant. With this capability, the chatbot can process visual information on the screen as the user plays games, and offer in-game assistance in real-time. Eventually, the tech giant plans to make Copilot for Gaming available across different interfaces, including the Xbox console.

  • Split Fiction on Switch 2 Can Be Shared With Nintendo Switch Players via GameShare, Says EA

Split Fiction on Nintendo Switch 2 will let players on the original Switch join in via GameShare, Electronic Arts has said. The GameShare feature, announced alongside the Switch 2, allows two players, who own a Switch 2 or the Nintendo Switch, to share a single copy of a compatible game over a local wireless connection. A Nintendo Switch 2 owner will be able to share Hazelight’s acclaimed co-op title with another user on the Switch via GameShare. Split Fiction is coming to Nintendo’s new console as a launch title on June 5.

Split Fiction on Switch 2 and Switch

In a blog post detailing Split Fiction’s Nintendo Switch 2 features, EA confirmed that Switch owners will be able to receive and play the game locally alongside a Switch 2 user.

“GameShare will enable Nintendo Switch 2 owners to invite another player to play together over a local wireless connection using just one copy of the game. This “other player” can be not only a Nintendo Switch 2 owner but a Nintendo Switch owner as well,” the blog post read.

Earlier when EA had announced Split Fiction for the Switch successor, it had said the co-op title could only be shared with another player on their Nintendo Switch 2.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo, too, has said that only Switch 1 compatible games can be shared to the hybrid console from a Switch 2. “Only Nintendo Switch 2 systems can share games, but any Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch can receive them. Nintendo Switch systems can only receive games that are compatible with Nintendo Switch,” the page explaining GameShare feature on the Nintendo website reads.

EA’s confirmation on Split Fiction being playable on the Switch via GameShare, however, runs contradictory to Nintendo’s description, as the game will not be native to the Nintendo Switch. The game has been announced for the Switch 2 but is not launching on the original Switch.

Split Fiction is also confirmed to support Friend’s Pass and Cross Play on the Nintendo Switch 2. Friend’s Pass, a feature in Hazelight Studios’ co-op games, lets two players play the game together online, with only one of those players needing to own a copy. With cross play, players will be able to experience the game together across PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch 2 with the help of an EA account.

Switch 2 pre-orders for Split Fiction will begin on April 24, with the game priced at $49.99. It will release on the Switch 2 as a launch-day title on June 5. Split Fiction launched on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X on March 6

Tata Elxsi, a global leader in design and technology services, has announced a major strategic multi-year deal worth €50 million with a prominent European-headquartered automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The partnership will see Tata Elxsi become a key engineering partner in the development of platform and application solutions across software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms, electrification, body and chassis systems.

As part of the agreement, Tata Elxsi will establish a dedicated Global Engineering Centre to support the OEM’s software platform roadmap and brand-aligned software engineering initiatives. Tata Elxsi was selected for its deep domain expertise in key automotive areas such as electrification, body & chassis, infotainment, and cybersecurity. The company’s robust track record in delivering automotive software solutions and operating global delivery hubs for top OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers was also a significant factor in the selection.

Harvard refused to give in to Donald Trump’s demands which would have curbed their independence, but now they will not get federal funds. The Department of Homeland Security has now sought the detailed records of Harvard’s foreign student visa holders’ illegal and violent activities from the university — in a scathing letter. If the university does not comply by April 30, 2025, it will not be allowed to take international students as the department would stop the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), it said. The SEVP certification allows universities to issue the forms students need to apply for visas to enter the US international students made up more than 27 per cent of Harvard’s enrolled students for the 2024-25 year, according to the university’s data.
A Harvard spokesperson told The Harvard Crimson that despite the letter, the university stands by its previous statement that the university “will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.”
“We will continue to comply with the law and expect the Administration to do the same,” spokesperson Sarah E Kennedy O’Reilly said.

Trump vs Harvard: Here’s what happened so far

On March 31, 2025, the Trump administration announced a review of approximately $9 billion in federal grants and contracts to Harvard, including $8.7 billion in multi-year grant commitments and $255.6 million in contracts. The administration cited Harvard’s alleged failure to protect Jewish students from antisemitic discrimination and its promotion of “divisive ideologies” over free inquiry.
This was not a Harvard-only measure, as many other Ivy League schools acquiesced in the administration’s decision.
But Harvard president Alan Garber rejected the demands and said those violated Harvard’s First Amendment rights.
Trump administration froze $2.2–$2.3 billion in federal research grants to Harvard. It has also moved to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
“Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning, and should not be considered on any list of the World’s Great Universities or Colleges,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
“Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds.”
