‘A disgrace’: Donald Trump targets Harvard university amid $2.2 billion funding freeze

Trump calls Harvard University ‘a disgrace’

US President Donald Trump intensified his administration’s ongoing clash with Harvard University on Thursday, labeling the Ivy League institution “a disgrace” as federal agencies take unprecedented steps against its funding, tax status, and ability to host international students.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump delivered a scathing rebuke of the university, citing what he called its failure to uphold American values. “I think Harvard’s a disgrace,” Trump said calling them “obviously antisemitic”.
Further talking about the reports that the Internal Revenue Service was planning to remove Harvard’s tax-exempt status, Trump addressing the press at the White House claimed to not know the status of their findings. He did not think a final ruling had been made, and indicated other schools were under scrutiny. “I’m not involved in it. It’s being handled by lawyers. I read about it just like you did,” he said about the reports. However, talk about the exemption he said, “Tax-exempt status, I mean, it’s a privilege. It’s really a privilege, and it’s been abused by a lot more than Harvard.”
Then naming other universities he went on to say, “When you take a look whether it’s Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, I don’t know what’s going on, but when you see how badly they’ve acted and in other ways also. So we’ll, we’ll be looking at it very strongly.”

‘A disgrace’: Donald Trump hits out at Harvard University

The scriticism came after the Department of Homeland Security formally ordered Harvard to provide detailed records on foreign students allegedly involved in “illegal and violent activities.” In a separate action, the administration canceled two federal grants worth $2.7 million and froze over $2 billion in additional funding for research and academic programs.

Harvard, the oldest and wealthiest university in the United States, became a primary target after refusing to comply with federal demands to discipline student activists, revise admissions policies, and monitor international students for ideological alignment with “American values.”
In an open challenge to the government, Harvard President Alan Garber declared Monday that the university would not submit to politically driven demands, citing constitutional protections. “Harvard will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights,” the university said in a statement.
Earlier, Trump has also questioned whether Harvard should retain its tax-exempt status as a nonprofit, writing on Truth Social that the university’s actions may violate laws governing charitable institutions. While federal law bars the president from directly initiating an IRS investigation, officials confirmed that a review into Harvard’s tax standing was underway before his remarks.
Former Harvard President and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers condemned the effort, calling it “an abuse of executive power,” as quoted by Reuters.
The administration’s aggressive stance has sparked alarm across academia, especially among international students. At Harvard, where 27% of students come from abroad, many expressed fear that their legal status is in jeopardy.
“Harvard without its international community is simply not Harvard,” said Leo Gerdén, a Swedish senior studying economics and government. “We feel like targets, and it’s terrifying.”
With tensions escalating and institutions like Columbia University following Harvard’s lead in defying government pressure, the standoff appears far from over. “This is not just about Harvard,” said democracy professor Archon Fung. “It’s about whether academic institutions can remain independent in the face of political coercion.”

ED raid at Bengaluru breeder’s house shows Rs 50cr wolfdog story fake

BENGALURU/HYDERABAD: A dog breeder who claimed to have acquired a Cadabomb Okami — a wolfdog which is a rare hybrid of a wolf and a Caucasian Shepherd — from London for Rs 50 crore was raided by Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials Thursday. Their investigation revealed his claims were untrue.
Famous for their muscular physique and guarding nature, Caucasian Shepherds are ideal companions for protection, but the Okami’s wolf-like features makes it stand out.
Raids were carried out at the JP Nagar III Phase residence of the dog breeder in Bengaluru. According to ED sources, they did not come across any such dog, nor documents to support its purchase.
“Acting on reports of potential violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema), the ED carried out a search operation at the breeder’s residence, only to find no trace of the exotic canine, Cadabomb Okami. It is clear. No dog, no supporting documents to show its purchase,” a source said.
Some photographs of the Okami had gained significant traction across various platforms, lending credence to the person’s claims. However, the sleuths found that the images presented as proof were of someone else’s canine.
“No documentation existed for international payments, importation permits, or any proof of the claimed Rs 50 crore spending. The entire incident was revealed to be an elaborately orchestrated attempt to gain public attention. All his claims are fake,” the source added.
    Key highlights:

    • The Enforcement Directorate raided a Bengaluru dog breeder’s JP Nagar residence over alleged FEMA violations linked to the claimed purchase of a rare Cadabomb Okami wolfdog for ?50 crore.
    • Officials found no evidence of the exotic canine, nor any documentation to support the claimed international transaction, import permits, or ownership.
    • The breeder allegedly used images of another dog to fabricate the story, which officials called a “publicity stunt” with no basis in fact.

‘Uska jaane ka time aa gaya’: Sehwag’s message to Rohit

    Rohit Sharma (BCCI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma’s scores in the ongoing Indian Premier League season read: 0, 8, 13, 17, 18, and 28. The Mumbai Indians stalwart, who has led the franchise to five IPL titles, is currently enduring a rough patch with the bat.
On Thursday, skipper Hardik Pandya brought Rohit in as an Impact Player against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the veteran batter’s struggles continued. He managed just 26 runs before being dismissed by Pat Cummins.
In six innings so far, Rohit has scored only 82 runs at a disappointing average of 13.66.
His lean run has drawn sharp criticism from former India opener Virender Sehwag, who didn’t mince words. Sehwag cautioned Rohit about protecting his legacy and even suggested that it might be time for him to consider stepping away from the format.
“If you look at Rohit’s IPL numbers in the last 10 years, he scored more than 400 runs only once. So he is not the kind of player who thinks that I need to score 500 or 700 runs. If he thinks, he might. When he became the Indian captain, he said that he wanted to be the player who wants to cash in on the powerplay and take the chances, so he wanted to make all the sacrifices alone, but he is not considering the fact that at the end of the day when he is not performing, it is your legacy that is getting hurt,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
“Ab uska jaane ka time aa gaya, (It’s already time for him to retire), and before retiring, you would want to give fans something to remember you by, and not moments that force them to think, why are they not dropping him,” he said.
“Take 10 balls extra, but at least play and give yourself a chance. He has been getting out to that pull shot many times against the back of the length deliveries. So he should decide that in one innings he will not play the pull shot at all. But who will explain it to him? There should be someone telling him to play normal cricket. When I was there, Sachin, Dravid or Ganguly used to tell me to play normal cricket,” he added.

    Poll

Is it time for Rohit Sharma to retire from IPL?

A disciplined performance from the bowling unit, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and captain Hardik Pandya, powered Mumbai Indians to a four-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a low-scoring clash at the Wankhede Stadium.
Will Jacks emerged as the standout performer for Mumbai, picking up two key wickets and contributing a crucial 36 with the bat to steer the team to their second consecutive victory in IPL 2025.
This marked Mumbai Indians’ third win of the season, taking their tally to six points and lifting them to seventh place in the standings—breaking free from the congestion of teams stuck at four points near the bottom. Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, remain on four points.

  • Wait over, PU reopens hostel doors for boys

Patna: After nearly a year, Patna University (PU) will finally reopen the doors of its boys’ hostels, with old boarders to be given preference while allotting rooms in the first phase, likely to happen in a week’s time.
A decision to allow hostel accommodation was taken during a meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh. Anil Kumar, PU dean, students’ welfare, proctor Manoj Kumar, registrar Shalini and superintendents of all postgraduate hostels attended the meeting.
It was decided that in the first phase, hostels would be allotted to those boys who were earlier occupying rooms, and were asked to vacate the same by the university administration in the wake of the brutal murder of B N College student Harsh Raj in the last week of May 2024. Old boarders can apply for hostel allotment between April 21 and 26.
“Old boarders will have to submit fresh applications and deposit the requisite fee for getting accommodation in hostels. The process will be completed within a week,” said dean Kumar.
In the second phase, fresh allotment will be made only after admissions in the 2025-26 academic session get over. It, however, was decided that rooms in Faraday House of Patna Science College, and Jackson and Minto hostels of Patna College will not be allotted to the students at present as they are under repair. It was further decided that only bona fide students of the university will be allowed to occupy rooms in the university hostels, said the dean.
There are 26 hostels under Patna University, 20 for boys and the rest for girls. The hostels can accommodate 1,400 boys and 998 girls.
After the murder of Raj on Patna Law College campus in May last year, the then governor-cum-chancellor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, had asked the district administration as well as university authorities to get all the boys’ hostels vacated, taking a strong view of the deteriorating law and order, and frequent clashed among the boarders.
The boarders of all the hostels were compelled to seek accommodation in private lodges of the city.
When the new academic session of the PU commenced last year, no hostel accommodation was given to the freshers either.
The PU administration, on its part, wrote to the office of the chancellor on several occasions for according his permission to allot hostels to the needy students, but the latter did not permit the university to do so. At best, he allowed the university administration to provide hostel accommodation only to the girls.
