  • Decomposed Body Of Minor Found In Septic Tank In Odisha, 1 Arrested

Enraged villagers on Monday ransacked the house of the accused person (Representational)

    Bhubaneswar:

Tension prevailed at Ratanpur village in Delanga block of Puri district in Odisha on Monday following the recovery of the decomposed body of a minor boy from the septic tank, who had been missing since April 15.

Police have detained the suspect Pravakar Sahoo alias Bapi, one of the distant relatives of the minor victim, in the case.

Meanwhile, the enraged villagers on Monday ransacked the house of the accused person, demanding capital punishment for him. The villagers have been accusing the police of negligence in the incident and have demanded a speedy trial in the case.

As per local sources, the boy who died, Ashirbad Sahoo, the 11-year-old minor son of Manas Kumar Sahoo, had gone missing while playing near his residence at Ratanpur village under Delanga police limits in the evening on April 15.

The family members later lodged a missing report at the Delanga police station, suspecting the accused’s role in Ashirbad’s missing.

The police’s failure to trace the whereabouts of the missing child enraged the locals as thousands of villagers led by BJD leader and former MLA Rudra Pratap Maharathy staged a road blockade at Delanga market on Sunday.

The protesters, alleging the local police’s callous attitude and incompetence, demanded a Crime Branch probe into the missing case.

The local police had earlier detained the accused on the allegations of the boy’s family members, but later released him without taking any action against the accused, which further enraged the villagers.

Following the protest and road blockade, Puri police intensified their probe into the case and apprehended the suspect Bapi from the Tangi area of Khurdha district on Sunday.

The accused reportedly confessed to the police about committing the crime and dumping the minor’s body into a septic tank during interrogation.

The police later recovered the purported decomposed naked body of Ashirbad from the septic tank of a local villager late Sunday night. Locals alleged that the accused committed unnatural sex with the minor and later killed him to destroy all evidence regarding the incident.

Talking to IANS, a senior police official on Monday said that the accused had a business rivalry with Ashirbad’s father for a long time and might have killed the minor for it.

Reacting to the allegations of unnatural sex as the reason behind the ghastly murder, the senior police official said the postmortem report of Ashirbad can only confirm these allegations.

  • New south campus of Patna University to be built in Saidpur

New south campus of Patna University to be built in Saidpur

Patna: Patna University (PU) is planning to develop two separate campuses, a north and south campus, mirroring the structure of Delhi University. A master plan for the development of its south campus in the Saidpur area, which will be 4km away from the main academic campus, has already been submitted to the state govt.
PU’s development officer Khagandra Kumar told this newspaper on Monday that the south campus is supposed to have residential facilities for its teachers, university staff and hostels for the boys.
“The entire south campus in Saidpur is currently planned to be converted into a residential campus at a cost of ₹750 crore. For this, the proposal with the model has been sent to the state education department by the university for approval,” Kumar said.
He pointed out that the south campus will have hostels for accommodation of about 7,000 students. Besides, there will be separate residential buildings for the teachers and staff. “There will be a football ground in the middle of these buildings, a volleyball court as well as a mini market complex, where students will also get everything they require,” he said, adding that the marketing complex will be towards the Bazar Samiti campus.
Kumar added that the blueprint of the campus along with the architectural model of the residential premises and other amenities in the south campus have been prepared in the light of all modern requirements of students and teachers.
PU vice-chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh said the university has been constantly reminding the state govt about the proposed development of its south campus. “When fully developed, this complex will have five to six buildings of G+10 (of different shapes). While some of these buildings have been earmarked for boys’ hostel, others will provide accommodation for the teachers and staff of the university,” the VC said, adding that besides having sufficient space for sports and games activities, a swimming pool will also be constructed at the site. The entire campus will be developed as a ‘green campus’.
PU is already developing its main campus by constructing new administrative and academic complexes on Ashok Rajpath and constructing new hostels for foreign scholars and girl students.
PU’s former vice-chancellor Girish Kumar Chaudhary said CM Nitish Kumar had earlier assured him that the govt would provide all financial help for the development of PU’s new campus at Saidpur. PU had initially acquired about a plot of 35 acres of land at Saidpur for the development of its campus in 1956, but in 2017, seven acres of its land were transferred to the proposed science city developing in its vicinity.
PU internal quality assurance cell (IQAC) director Birendra Prasad said as the construction of the metro between the main campus and the south campus is already going on, students and teachers residing at Saidpur complex would not face any inconvenience in commuting from one end to the other. “Students will reach from the north to south campus within a few minutes,” he said.
As PU is approaching its second accreditation cycle by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), it is busy developing its entire campus. “The university will apply for its accreditation in the second cycle as soon as NAAC opens its portal,” Prasad said.

Bhagalpur has 5,649 nonagenarian voters, efforts on to boost voting percentage: DEO

Bhagalpur: Bhagalpur district has altogether 5,649 nonagenarian voters enrolled on the electoral roll, as per the updated list of district election cell on April 19, 2025.
“Out of the total 5,649 elderly voters in the age group of 90 years and above, 733 will be casting their votes for Bihpur assembly, whereas 745 in Gopalpur, 477 in Pirpainty (SC), 858 in Kahalgaon, 668 in Bhagalpur, 1247 in Sultanganj and 931 in Nathnagar assembly segments,” said Sweta Kumari, district election officer (DEO) on Monday.
Recently, senior district officials held a meeting with the election officials and representatives of the political parties, seeking suggestions about the arrangements to be made for the nonagenarian voters, besides increasing the voting percentage in different assembly segments.
Deputy development commissioner (DDC), Pradip Singh, said that Bhagalpur district witnessed low voting percentage in the parliamentary elections in 2024 in comparison to 2020. Therefore, steps should be taken to increase the voting percentage, he said.
“Awareness programme is being run for the cross sections of the society, including the 90-plus voters to participate in the voting process,” the DDC said, while seeking cooperation from common people, including political parties’ workers.
In a comparative analysis of the statistics about voting percentages of 2020 and 2024 assembly elections in the district (assembly segment wise), it was found that the voting percentage in 2024 polls was relatively less compared to 56.96% in the assembly segments in the district for the assembly elections held in 2020.
Referring to addition and deletion of names in the electoral roll, the DDC informed that 13,513 applications were submitted for addition of names in the electoral roll in the form (prapatra) 6 and 5379 applications for deletion of names in the form 7, besides 9,880 applications for rectification in the voter details in the form 8 have been received till April 18.
The DEO, when contacted by TNN on Monday, said that efforts were underway to increase the voting percentage in the assembly segments of the district for the forthcoming assembly elections. “We will make efforts so that nonagenarian voters cast their votes in large number. We will reach out to the families to motivate their senior family members to cast their votes in the forthcoming election,” she said.

  • Army veterans outraged after IAF officer assaulted in Bengaluru: ‘Does he have to learn every language?’

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Aditya Bose and his wife Squadron Leader Madhumita were assaulted in a road rage incident in Bengaluru.

    New Delhi:

Army veterans have voiced strong condemnation over the alleged assault of IAF Wing Commander Aditya Bose and his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita, in Bengaluru. What began as a road rage incident reportedly turned into a conflict over language. Veterans are now raising concerns about whether defence personnel should be expected to learn the local language of every state they are posted in.

In a post on X, former Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General (retd) KJS Dhillon pointed out that a defense officer is typically posted to 10-15 different states throughout their service. He questioned whether it is necessary for these officers to learn the language of each state before they can lay down their lives protecting the nation, including its people.

“Banglore – Always knew it as a beautiful city with wonderful ppl living in peace & harmony. A defence forces officer gets posted to 10 – 15 states during his service … Does he have to learn the language of each state before he lays down his life protecting his Nation including the people of that state?” he said.

Major Manik M Jolly (retd) expressed his concern, stating that the “speak Kannada” issue is really getting out of hand. “This – speak Kannada- thing is really getting out of hands ! A serving Wing Commander posted in DRDO, Bangalore was attacked viciously now. Soldiers serve across the nation doing their duties. It’s shameful that a state would treat them this way,” he wrote on X.

“Absolutely shameful. But just saying so won’t do. The culprits have to be brought to book and an example set. Also the Centre needs to consider legislating on methodology to control and eliminate such regional and linguistic fanaticism. Enough is enough,” said another army veteran.

Wing Commander Aditya Bose and wife assaulted

Wing Commander Bose shared a video and information about the entire incident. However, the Bengaluru police arrested the accused in the case.

According to Wing Commander Bose, the incident was reported on April 18, 2025, while the couple was en route from the DRDO colony in CV Raman Nagar to the airport when a biker allegedly stopped their car and began hurling verbal abuses in Kannada. After this, the situation escalated when the biker noticed the DRDO sticker on their vehicle, leading to further derogatory remarks directed at both him and his wife, Bose said.

After he came out of the car to address the confrontation, Bose was reportedly struck on the forehead using a key by the biker, resulting in profuse bleeding. He also stated that other individuals on the road joined the initial attacker, with one person picking up a stone and hitting him on the head.

As the violent incident unfolded, the officer recorded a video while he was injured, his face and neck covered in blood.

The wing commander in the video said: “A bike came from behind and stopped our car. The guy started abusing me in Kannada. When they saw the DRDO sticker on my car and said ‘You DRDO people’ .. . they also abused my wife. The moment I got out of my car, the biker hit me with a key on my forehead, and there was blood.”

He also stated that he stood at the scene, shouting and questioning how citizens could treat a member of the armed forces in such a way. He also expressed resentment, pointing out the irony of being attacked despite serving in the defense of the nation.

After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the Bengaluru police took note of the incident and were working to verify the details. Moreover, the police were also trying to establish contact with the victim to investigate further.
