  • ‘You Let 1 Lakh Vehicles Pollute…’: BJP Targets Arvind Kejriwal Over Report

‘You Let 1 Lakh Vehicles Pollute…’: BJP Targets Arvind Kejriwal Over Report

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Sirsa has accused Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP – in power before the BJP won the February election – of allowing more than 1.08 lakh vehicles to run on city roads despite each emitting carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) beyond permissible limits.

Mr Sirsa also accused Mr Kejriwal and his AAP of corruption related to tenders for purchase of public (CNG) buses and the installation of ‘anti-smog towers’, claiming a sum greater than Rs 87 lakh had been “wasted”. He also claimed Rs 22 crore had been spent on a ‘missing’ smog tower.

These, and other lapses in pollution control mechanisms, led to the annual deterioration of air quality in Delhi, Mr Sirsa declared, speaking after a Comptroller & Auditor-General report – that audited the AAP’s battle against air pollution – was tabled by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The AAP has not yet responded to these charges.

The CAG report highlighted failures of the AAP government in controlling vehicular emission, such as not keeping data about the type and number of vehicles plying on Delhi roads and assessment of emission loads. It also flagged a shortage of buses and other options that would allow commuters to overcome last-mile connectivity issues and use public transport.

Mr Sirsa later told reporters the Delhi government at the time had been told of the need for 11,000 buses but, instead, fleet size was reduced by more than 20 per cent.

The CAG report also red-flagged irregularities in the issue of PUC (pollution under control) certificates for vehicles, unreliable air quality monitors, and poor enforcement of the law.

On the PUC issue, the report said in many cases, multiple vehicles were issued certificates from the same testing centre at the same time, sometimes within a minute of each other.

This should not be possible since each pollution test can take several minutes.

It was also pointed out that between 2015 and 2020, nearly 4,000 diesel vehicles were found to have exceeded emission norms but were still certified as ‘compliant’, allowing them to be used.

The Delhi government at the time, the CAG report further said, also lacked data about the number, type, and emission loads of vehicles on city roads, which meant it could not come up with source-specific plans to tackle what is an annual and dangerous air quality crisis.

Vehicular emissions are “major contributors” to the air pollution crisis, the CAG report said, noting also the lack of data about benzene levels, or means to reduce these, at fuel stations.

The report also pointed to a number of other concerns, including the failure of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to record data for as many as 16 hours a day, including of lead in the air and real-time information about sources of pollutants, leading to skewed final analysis.

There is “a pressing need” for the Delhi government to now take “comprehensive steps to address gaps in air quality monitoring and vehicular emission control measures”, the CAG said.

The CAG report is one of 14 the new BJP government has said will be tabled in the Delhi Assembly as part of an ‘audit’ of the previous administration. Eight, including a report on the liquor excise policy scam that roiled the AAP before the February election, have been tabled.

The BJP returned to power in Delhi in style, winning 48 of the city’s 70 Assembly seats in the election. The AAP, which had won over 60 in each of the past two polls, was left with 22.

Mr Kejriwal, the AAP’s supreme leader, and his right-hand man, Manish Sisodia, both of whom had been jailed in connection with the liquor policy scam, both lost their seats.

  • Police Cast Doubt On Injury Claims As Prince Andrew’s Accuser Virginia Giuffre Says She Has “Days to Live”

Police Cast Doubt On Injury Claims As Prince Andrew’s Accuser Virginia Giuffre Says She Has “Days to Live”

Police have issued a critical update concerning Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking victim Virginia Giuffre, who, after a car crash, stated she had only four days left to live.

The Western Australia Police Force (WAPF) confirmed receiving a report of a “minor crash” involving a bus and a car north of Perth on March 24.

However, Kylie Whitely, Acting Western Australia Police Commissioner, said no injuries were reported. “There were no reported injuries as a result of the crash,” the Western Australia police spokesman said in a statement, the Telegraph reported.

In an Instagram post shared on Monday, 41-year-old Virginia Giuffre claimed she was struck by a school bus travelling at 110 km/h (68.3 mph) and had been given just four days to live. She also shared a photo that appeared to show her lying in a hospital bed with extensive facial bruising, including a black eye.

Giuffre stated that she was being transferred to a specialist hospital in urology, which treats kidney and other organ-related conditions. Expressing her final wish, she wrote: “They’ve given me four days to live, transferring me to a specialist hospital in urology. My last wish is to see my three children one last time.”

Reflecting on the crash, she added: “No matter what your car is made of, it might as well be a tin can when a school bus comes at you at 110 km/h while you’re slowing down for a turn.”

A WAPF spokesperson told The Mirror that the crash, which occurred in Neergabby on March 24 just after 3 p.m., was reported by the bus driver the following day. The car sustained approximately AUD 2,000 in damage, and no injuries were reported.

Brad Edwards, who has represented Giuffre in past legal cases, described her condition as “very bad” but expressed hope that she would recover with proper medical care.

Originally from California, Giuffre now resides in Australia. She was a victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and has previously alleged she was trafficked to Prince Andrew. While Andrew has denied the claims, he reached an out-of-court settlement with her in 2022, which included no admission of liability.

  • As Trump Changes US Election Process, Talks Of 3rd Term, Democrats Sue Him

As Trump Changes US Election Process, Talks Of 3rd Term, Democrats Sue Him

Days before Donald Trump said he is “not joking” about aiming for a third term as US President, he used his presidential privilege of an executive order to introduce sweeping changes to America’s voting system. A move that has now forced opposition Democrats to sue him.

“It is simply not within the president’s authority to set election rules by executive decree,” a statement issued by advocacy group Campaign Legal Center stated after the lawsuit was filed in a US court.

Among the massive changes in the US electoral process ordered by President Trump, a few that have analysts concerned are requiring voters to register themselves by submitting documents proving their US citizenship, else not be eligible to vote; and limiting the counting of mail-in ballots that arrive after voting day.

The Democratic Party, upset over such changes – which may impact millions of voters, and potentially sway the election result – demanded that the federal court block the President’s executive order. “The President does not get to dictate the rules of our elections,” said the lawsuit filed in Washington by the Democratic National Committee, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and others.

Describing the changes as “radical”, the Democratic Party’s lawsuit against Trump said, “The executive order seeks to impose radical changes on how Americans register to vote, cast a ballot, and participate in our democracy – all of which threaten to disenfranchise voters,”

“None of this is legal,” it claimed.

DONALD TRUMP’S STAND ON US ELECTION PROCESS

Donald Trump, who signed the presidential order titled ‘Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections’ on March 25, called it “the farthest-reaching executive action ever taken”. He had said he has done so to secure the US election from “widespread rigging”.

Till date, Donald Trump does not agree with or acknowledge his defeat in the 2020 US presidential election. He has repeatedly questioned the integrity of the US electoral system. He has been very vocal about “massive election fraud” in the United States, particularly involving “absentee voting”.

A faction of legal experts, who back the Democratic Party lawsuit against Trump, have denounced the presidential order as “an abuse” of his power. These changes, they say, will “prevent millions of voters from casting their ballot”.

“The president’s executive order is an unlawful action that threatens to uproot our tried-and-tested election systems,” a statement issued by them says.

Donald Trump insists those who are coming to vote must register with proper documentation proving their citizenship – like a passport, for example. President Trump gave India’s example and credited the world’s largest democracy for having something called a voter card and Aadhaar card, which ensures proper registration of voters.

TRUMP “NOT JOKING” ABOUT THIRD TERM

Though his current presidential order mentions nothing about proposing any changes to the number of terms a US President can have, Donald Trump has said he is actively considering a third term in office – which happened only once in US history, after which a two-term limit was introduced by way of a constitutional amendment.

The US Constitution limits the number of 4-year terms that a President can have to just two. These can be consecutive or non-consecutive, but cannot exceed two terms or 8 years. For Donald Trump to contest for a third term as President, his party will have to introduce a Constitutional amendment – which is difficult to achieve as it required sweeping support both in the US Congress as well as in a majority of the 50 states.

In a telephonic interview to NBC News, Donald Trump made his intentions clear. “No, I’m not joking. I’m not joking (about a third term as President).” However, he added that “it is far too early to think about it,” considering his second term in office has just completed two months.

On being asked how he plans to go ahead with it, President Trump simply said, “There are methods by which you could do it, as you well know,” declining to elaborate or give specifics of how or when he plans to do so.

To allow for a third term, Donald Trump and his party will have to change the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution. But a proposal to overturn a constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by the legislatures of three-fourths of the 50 US states.

Some Trump allies have floated the idea of keeping Trump in the White House beyond 2028. Donald Trump, who at 78 was the oldest US president at the time of his inauguration, would be 82 if he took on another four-year term following the November 2028 election.

    US PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY

America’s first president, George Washington, had set a precedent in 1797 by stepping down after serving two terms in office, but the two-term presidential limit was only formally codified more than 150 years later.

Only one US President – Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt – served more than two terms in the White House. President Roosevelt was elected four times – in 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944. His fourth term ended prematurely with his death on April 12, 1945. He was 63 at the time of his death.

Other former US Presidents, notably Ulysses S. Grant and Theodore Roosevelt, had sought a third term in office, but failed to win the nomination or re-election.

The 22nd Amendment limiting a President to two terms in office was passed in 1947 – two years after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death – by two-thirds of the House of Representatives and two-thirds of the Senate.

It was ratified by three-quarters of the 50 US state legislatures in 1951.

  • ‘Was Plea Filed For Publicity?’ Court Denies Stay On Mohanlal Film Screening

‘Was Plea Filed For Publicity?’ Court Denies Stay On Mohanlal Film Screening

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday declined to issue any interim order putting on hold the screening of Malayalam film ‘L2: Empuraan’ starring superstar Mohanlal.

Justice C S Dias ordered to issue notice to the Centre and the Censor Board seeking their stand on the plea by Thrissur-native V V Vijeesh who has claimed that continuing to show the movie poses a risk of inciting communal violence and disturbing public order.

It listed the matter for hearing after the vacation.

The court also questioned whether the petition was filed in publicity interest by the petitioner.

During the brief hearing of the matter, the court also asked what was the problem when the Censor Board had certified the film for public viewing.

It also expressed doubts about the petitioner’s intention behind filing the plea.

It also pointed out that no case was filed anywhere against the movie.

The state government said that no case has been lodged against the film in Kerala.

Meanwhile, Antony Perumbavoor, one of the producers of the film, earlier in the day announced that the movie has undergone cuts to remove scenes of little over two minutes.

He said the decision to carry out the edit was a joint one of all the producers and actors, including Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, and it was not out of fear of anyone.

The movie has faced intense criticism from the Sangh Parivar with regard to some portions of the film.

‘L2: Empuraan’, the second part of the ‘Lucifer’ movie, a trilogy planned by the Prithviraj-Mohanlal team, has become a topic of hot debate over its critique of right-wing politics and the covert mention of the Gujarat riots.

On March 27, the day of the movie’s release, the Sangh Parivar vehemently criticised the film on social media, while the Congress and Left platforms celebrated the film for portraying the right-wing politics as “villainous”.

  • Bhojpur tops in earning revenue through fines against illegal sand mining

Ara: About 18% of the total revenue earned by the state through the mines and geology department in financial year (FY) 2024-25 came from Bhojpur, which earned over Rs 200 crore more than the target fixed for the district, according to a press release issued on Monday night. Furthermore, the Bhojpur district also topped all the districts in earning revenue through imposing fines for illegal sand mining in 2024-25.
“As against the target of Rs 448.84 crore revenue fixed by the state mines and geology, and finance departments for Bhojpur in 2024-25, it earned Rs 652.4 crore, thus earning about 145% more than the fixed target in the FY,” said the press release from the district magistrate’s (DM) office issued on Monday night.
A district official said Bhojpur has also generated Rs 23.59 crore, the highest revenue in the state through imposing fines against illegal sand mining.
Asserting that the stern action against illegal sand mining, transportation and storage will continue unabated, both Bhojpur DM Tanai Sultania and superintendent of police Raj have issued a stern warning against those found involved.
In 2024-25, 1,774 raids were conducted against illegal sand mining across Bhojpur, 268 FIRs lodged, and 118 accused arrested and 1,111 vehicles were seized, according to a joint statement by the mining department, district administration and police.
The district administration has given permits and licences for mining activities for a total of 38 sand ghats. The district mining department earned revenues primarily through royalties and fines. Out of the Rs 652.4 crore revenue earned by the Bhojpur district, Rs 607 crore has been earned as royalties on sand mining. • LJP(RV) blames Paras for ‘ill-treatment’ of Ram Vilas’s first wife

Patna: Union minister Chirag Paswan‘s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) on Monday blamed his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras for alleged mistreatment meted out to his late father’s first wife.
According to LJP (RV) state president Raju Tiwari, the wives of Paras and his deceased younger brother Ram Chandra Paswan recently tried to evict Rajkumari Devi from their ancestral house in Khagaria district.
The Union minister’s late father Ram Vilas Paswan had tied the knot with Rajkumari Devi more than 20 years before marrying his mother Reena, who was based in Delhi.
According to Tiwari, “As soon as our national president learnt of the episode, he asked his nephew Prince Paswan to visit their ancestral village Sahar Banni and take stock of the situation.”
“We have been told that the room allotted to Rajkumari Devi has been locked and she is being asked to leave. Paras, who claims to worship late Paswan, is behind the humiliation of bhabhi (sister-in-law), who is old and does not enjoy good health. But, we stand in her support,” said Tiwari.
No complaint has, so far, been lodged with the police in this regard and Paras, who heads the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party, could not be reached for comments.
The latest row could be seen as part of the tussle between Chirag Paswan and Paras over the “political legacy” of late Ram Vilas Paswan, one of the tallest dalit leaders of his generation.
Months after the demise of Paswan senior, the Lok Janshakti Party was split by Paras, who left Chirag isolated and went on to enjoy a berth in the Union cabinet.
Barring Chirag, all other LJP MPs, including Ram Chandra Paswan’s son Prince Raj, had then rallied behind Paras who had sought to portray himself as the true political heir to his late brother.

  • Crocodile Kills Beachgoer, Drags Victim Through Sea In Indonesia

A 51-year-old man was killed by a crocodile while swimming near Talise Beach in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, on March 27, according to The Metro. The victim, identified as Sadarwinata, was attacked while paddling in the water, despite warnings from onlookers who spotted the approaching reptile. Witnesses reported that the crocodile grabbed the swimmer and thrashed him violently before carrying his body away. A local rescue team responded to the incident and used a thermal drone to track the crocodile, which was seen in aerial footage holding the victim’s body in its jaws near the shore.

Deny Abrahams, senior commissioner of the city police, said, ‘According to eyewitness statements, the victim was swimming too close to the crocodile that was already visible around the location. They shouted to warn him, but the victim was in the water and didn’t hear.

‘The rescue efforts were carried out swiftly by the joint team. One of the members of the Central Sulawesi Police Mobile Brigade Corps was even forced to shoot the crocodile to make it release the victim.’

  • Analysis: Why Nitish Kumar Is In Control Despite Health Concerns

The BJP has once again reiterated its support for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally since the 1990s. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his two-day tour of Bihar last week, underlined the need for the BJP and the NDA to work unitedly to win the upcoming assembly election in the state.

Amit Shah and Nitish Kumar shared the stage in Patna and promised a flood-free Bihar in the coming five years.

This must have come as a relief to Nitish Kumar and senior leaders of his Janata Dal-United (JDU), who have been worried about their boss’ “unstable and erratic” behaviour in public of late. In his latest public misstep, that too at an event also attended by Amit Shah, Kumar was seen placing his arm around a woman’s shoulder at a function to mark the launch of central and state projects in Patna. This provoked a backlash from the opposition RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal).

The Chief Minister was also criticised after a viral video showed him laughing and talking during the national anthem at an international sports event in Patna on March 21.

The instances have given ammo to the opposition RJD and the Congress to target Kumar with their allegation that the Bihar chief minister is “not mentally or physically stable”. Describing his so-called condition as a matter of great concern for Bihar, opposition leaders say Kumar can’t be given another term in light of his health condition.

Of course, Kumar’s party, JDU, ally the BJP and others have publicly defended him.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi of Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), a Nitish ally in Bihar, asserted that there was “nothing wrong with him”.

With the opposition’s increasing attacks on Kumar, will the BJP have a rethink on fighting elections under him?

There is simply too much at stake.

    Opposition’s Target

This is not the first time Chief Minister Kumar has made headlines for a flub. Last year, while campaigning for the NDA alliance during the 2024 national election, he predicted that the NDA would win over 4,000 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha. The viral clip was widely used by RJD leaders to deride the veteran politician.

Kumar inadvertently clapped during a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs’ Day on January 30; the awkward moment was caught on camera.

All this is grist for the RJD, which has routinely put up posters mocking Kumar outside the home of former chief minister Rabri Devi – Lalu Yadav’s wife – in Patna.

The Congress and Jan Suraaj Party have also slammed Kumar and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Shah are projecting him as the NDA’s chief ministerial face for the 2025 polls despite knowing the state of his health.

However, sources say that Nitish Kumar was alert and agile during his two-month-long Pragati yatra that ended on February 21. He visited 21 north Bihar districts to interact with people and get feedback on his governance and developmental works. Kumar was seen to be completely in command while reviewing development works and announcing new projects across Bihar. He even took errant senior officers to task.

    Connect continues

Bihar has always been an electoral enigma for the BJP. Hindutva politics hasn’t worked in the deeply entrenched caste equations of the state.  Bihar’s political landscape requires crafting fragile coalitions and a careful balancing act, which no party in recent times has been able to make on its own.

In the 2020 Bihar polls, the JDU won only 43 of the total 115 seats it contested. The BJP outshone Nitish Kumar’s party by winning 74 of the 110 seats it contested. There are 243 seats in the Bihar assembly.

Now, with both Chirag Paswan (Lok Janshakti Party) and Upendra Kushwaha (Rashtriya Lok Manch) back in the NDA, the BJP is hoping for the NDA to perform better than in the 2020 elections.

Bihar’s caste arithmetic indicates that the JDU and BJP, along with allies Chirag Paswan, Jitan Manjhi and Upendra Kushwaha, have a considerable electoral edge.

Creating a hallowed place for himself in a state where his own Kurmi caste is just 2.87% of the total votes needed clever social engineering, which Kumar achieved through the caste census. He created new segments of castes and community combinations that went beyond the existing dominant groups.

“The opposition knows well that any personal attack on Kumar will backfire, further consolidating his vote base,” says Ravi Upadhyay, senior journalist.

The outcome of the Bihar caste survey unveiled in October 2023 reflects Kumar’s support base and vote share. The survey revealed that OBCs (other backward classes) and EBCs (extremely backward classes) constitute a whopping 63 per cent of the state’s total population which, per data, stood at 13.07 crores. Of this, the EBC bloc was the largest social segment, accounting for about 36% of the population. Apart from his ‘Luv-Kush’ (Kurmi-Kushwaha) voters, Kumar has many supporters among the EBCs and Mahadalits.

“In the current social-political scenario, NDA is set to sweep this year’s assembly elections in Bihar,” says Nikhil Anand, national general secretary, BJP OBC Morcha.

Therefore, the BJP still considers Kumar a worthy ally who will help win another term in Bihar. The party believes that any anti-incumbency is trumped by the fallout of RJD’s “jungle raj”, still fresh in the minds of people. Comparatively, the BJP believes, Kumar’s 20-year rule has seen some governance in terms of law and order, implementation of schemes for women and poor sections, and infrastructure development like roads and bridges, etc.

Yet, the BJP has kept the JDU guessing. PM Modi, despite calling Nitish Kumar the ‘Laadla Mukhyamantri’ (favourite chief minister) on February 24 during his Bihar tour, didn’t declare Kumar as the coalition’s chief ministerial candidate as the JDU had hoped.

On March 4, at a BJP meeting in Patna attended by state observer ML Khattar and state in-charge Vinod Tawde, a section of party members discussed their future with JDU.

Amit Shah is cognisant of the BJP’s limitations in Bihar, and that is behind his message encouraging party workers to set a long-term “goal of two to three decades for a strong BJP rule in Bihar”.

The BJP is well aware of the reality that it can’t contest polls in Bihar without Nitish Kumar and form a government on its own, for now.

  • Icelandic Village Evacuated After Lava Spews From Volcanic Eruption

A fishing village in southwest Iceland was evacuated Tuesday after lava began spewing from a volcanic eruption, the eighth to hit the region since the end of 2023.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said “an eruption has started on the Sundhnuksgigar Crater Row” north of the fishing village Grindavik.

Live video feeds showed lava spewing out of a fissure in the ground.

The meteorological agency said a helicopter would be dispatched “to confirm the exact location and size of the eruption”.

The IMO warned earlier that an eruption could be imminent as “an earthquake swarm” began in the early morning on the in a similar fashion to previous eruptions.

The swarm was followed by deformations and pressure changes in boreholes operated by energy company HS Orka.

“Both independent measurements were a clear sign of the onset of a magma intrusion,” the IMO said.

Broadcaster RUV reported that authorities had begun evacuating Grindavik.

An eruption hit the area as recently as November, which in turn was the seventh eruption in a year.

Most of Grindavik’s 4,000 residents were evacuated in late 2023, shortly before the first volcanic eruption in the area.

Since then, almost all the houses have been sold to the state, and most of the residents departed.

RUV said the region’s police commissioner, Ulfar Ludviksson, reported that recently, around 40 houses in Grindavik were occupied by residents.

Volcanoes on the peninsula had not erupted for eight centuries until March 2021, when a period of heightened seismic activity began.

Volcanologists warned that volcanic activity in the region had entered a new era.

Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, more than any other European country.

It is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a fault in the ocean floor that separates the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and causes earthquakes and eruptions.

  • Shopping center, walking trails: Yamuna banks at Sarai Kale Khan, Wazirabad to get a makeover soon | DETAILS

Shopping center, walking trails: Yamuna banks at Sarai Kale Khan, Wazirabad to get a makeover soon | DETAILS

The total area under the Yamuna redevelopment plan in this stretch spans 1,660 hectares. Out of this, 740 hectares have already been developed, including Asita East and West, Kalindi Aviral (which encompasses Baansera Park), Vasudev Ghat, Amrut Biodiversity Park, and Yamuna Vatika near Rajghat.

The Yamuna River stretch in Delhi is undergoing a major makeover. Around a dozen spots along the 22-kilometer-long stretch from the Wazirabad to the Okhla barrages will be turned into parks, ghats, cafes, and hike trails, becoming major tourist attractions.

Five such public places have already been developed in the last two years and six more will be added to the list as part of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA)’s plan in the next couple of years, the Indian Express has reported.

Yamuna banks revamp: Location of new tourist spots

The total area under redevelopment in this stretch spans 1,660 hectares. Out of this, 740 hectares have already been developed, including Asita East and West, Kalindi Aviral (which encompasses Baansera Park), Vasudev Ghat, Amrut Biodiversity Park, and Yamuna Vatika near Rajghat.

Among the new projects, the riverfront near Sarai Kale Khan—developed on the site of the old Millennium Park Bus Depot—is expected to have the most public interaction.

Additionally, the national capital will soon see the Kalindi Biodiversity Park adjacent to the DND Flyway, the Mayur Nature Park near the Nizamuddin Bridge, and a new eco-tourism area near Rajghat.

The DDA’s biggest challenge will be connecting all 11 projects through a network of walkways and cycle tracks.

Piazza, park, shopping: Delhi’s first riverfront at Sarai Kale Khan

Delhi is set to receive its long-awaited Yamuna riverfront at the site of the former Millennium Park Bus Depot near Sarai Kale Khan. Spanning 25 hectares along a 200-meter-wide stretch of the Ring Road, the new development will feature a central piazza, a topiary park, a local shopping center inspired by the one in Sunder Nursery, two parking areas, and a river promenade.

Originally built to accommodate up to 1,000 buses for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Millennium Park Bus Depot faced opposition from environmentalists at the time of its construction. Initially intended as a temporary facility for the duration of the Games, it continued to serve as a bus parking area until at least 2020. The land was finally handed over to the DDA in 2023.

    Challenges: Encroachment on floodplains

The report cited a senior government official as saying the project is facing hurdles as many parts of Yamuna floodplains are encroached upon and also due to other existing projects coming in the way of linking all the riverfront which is the end goal.

“For now, we aim to complete all 11 projects. The linkage will be planned after,” the official added.

    Environment conservation measures by DDA

The changes go beyond aesthetics. The DDA has drawn inspiration from the existing biodiversity park at Wazirabad, incorporating depressions designed for water storage.

The agency has also prioritised the planting of native trees and grasses, with some species-specific to certain sections of the stretch. A DDA official involved in the project noted, “The true success of this project will be measured by how well the natural features we’ve integrated can withstand floods, as they do in parts of the river that remain untouched. The grasses and plants typical of riverine ecosystems differ significantly from those found in the Ridge area, and they won’t survive in the floodplain.”

In line with orders from the National Green Tribunal, the Delhi High Court, and the Supreme Court, the DDA is also issuing eviction notices to residents living on the floodplains, including those in Mayur Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan, and shanties near the DND Flyway. These directives emphasise that no encroachments will be permitted on the floodplains.

Waqf Bill: BJP issues three-line whip to Lok Sabha MPs to be present in Parliament tomorrow

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will respond to the debate and seek the House’s approval for Waqf Amendment Bill’s passage.

The Waqf amendment bill will be taken up for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha tomorrow i.e. April 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in Lok Sabha to be presented in the session. The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting was held today, and an eight-hour discussion is allotted for the Waqf Bill. However, Congress demanded a 12-hour discussion. This led to a heated exchange in the meeting between the government and the opposition side, leading to a walkout by the opposition.

BJP issues a whip to MPs

In a three line whip to all BJP MPs, the party stated, “All BJP Members in Lok Sabha are hereby informed that some very important Legislative Business will be taken up for passing in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the 2nd April 2025. All Members of BJP in Lok Sabha are, therefore, requested to be positively present in the House throughout the day on Wednesday, the 2nd April 2025 and support the Government’s stand.

Union Home Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said that the centre wants discussion on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which will be introduced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday after the Question Hour. Rijiju informed that an eight hour time has been decided for discussion in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting of Lok Sabha which can also be extended.

  • OPINION | No vacancy at the top: Modi will continue to lead

OPINION | No vacancy at the top: Modi will continue to lead

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut had claimed that PM Modi will retire at the age of 75, as per the BJP’s tradition. However, RSS has put a full stop to all speculations about the possibility of the retirement of PM Modi.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday put a stop to all speculations in social media about the possibility of the “retirement” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, while reacting to Modi’s visit to RSS headquarters in Nagpur on Sunday, had said that Modi was “retiring” as PM in September this year and the RSS wants a change in leadership. Raut went to the extent of saying that Modi’s successor would be a Marathi from Maharashtra. Responding to this, senior RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi said, “No such discussion took place, nor was there any thinking over this issue, the entire topic is baseless.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also scotched all such speculations, saying, “The nation wants Modi to become the Prime Minister again in 2029 and there is no question of choosing a successor now”.  It is a fact that there is no dearth of people who want to remove Modi from the post of Prime Minister. Those who could not defeat him in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections, sometimes placed bets on China or the US. They also placed bets on farmers or Muslims expecting that he would be removed from power. Some worthies even expressed hope that Modi would retire voluntarily and go to the Himalayas to “meditate.” Nobody can stop daydreamers. During elections, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal had said that Modi was seeking votes in order to make Amit Shah the PM. The voters kicked out AAP from power. For the last few weeks, there have been speculations in social media about a “rift” between RSS leadership and the Prime Minister. There were speculations that the RSS leadership was unhappy with Modi. There is a proverb in Hindi, “Sau Sunar Ki, Ek Luhar Ki” (literally meaning, a single blow of a blacksmith is equal to a hundred blows of a goldsmith). By visiting the RSS headquarters in Nagpur on Sunday, Modi, in a single stroke, put at rest all such speculations. Today a fresh speculation was floated. If some people have this wishful thinking about removing Modi, nobody can stop them. The reality is: Narendra Modi will complete his tenure easily, and if he gets the electoral mandate again, he will again become the PM in 2029. There is neither any alternative nor any successor or Number Two. I would rather say, there is nobody from number 1 to 10 who can replace Modi. All speculations about Modi “retiring” and choosing a successor are baseless. It is Modi who will decide till what time he would continue to lead the BJP. Judging by the toil that he is putting in, there seems to be no chance for anybody else in the next five to ten years. To put it bluntly, there is no vacancy at the top. Modi has always proved speculators and guessers wrong, time and again. This time too, they would be proved wrong again.

RSS: Controversy over Aurangzeb’s tomb is unnecessary

Senior RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi said on Monday that the recent controversy relating to the demand for removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s grave was “unnecessary”. Joshi said, “Aurangzeb died here. His tomb has been there for several centuries and shall continue to remain so. It won’t make any difference. There is no need to waste time on this. There is no point in making it a political issue”. Bhaiyyaji Joshi’s remarks came a day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena  chief Raj Thackeray said, Aurangzeb’s grave should remain where it is, but all structures erected around the grave must be removed. Raj Thackeray even suggested placing a notice board near the grave on which it must be written, “Here lies a man who tried to destroy Marathas”. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, Aurangzeb’s tomb is an ASI protected site, and the grave shall remain there. “But nobody will be allowed to glorify Aurangzeb”, he added. The most interesting remark came from Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi. It was Azmi’s remark, several weeks ago, praising Aurangzeb as a “justice loving emperor” that fuelled the controversy. On Monday, Abu Azmi said, he did not commit any sin. The fact is: by glorifying Aurangzeb, Azmi has hurt himself. He was suspended for the session in the Assembly and is facing several  cases in court. He forgot that the people of Maharashtra will never tolerate anyone who praises the Mughal ruler who fought against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The sentiments of Maharashtrians for Shivaji should not be challenged.

Will Nepal become a Hindu state with a King?

Nepal is on the boil after pro-monarchist agitators turned violent following clashes with security forces in Kathmandu. Surprisingly, a former Maoist, Durga Prasai is leading the agitation. The former King of Nepal Gyanendra Shah has supported the agitation. Several leaders and journalists have also joined the movement. The chief of Nepal Bachau Mahasangram and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party leader Ms. Rama Singh alleged that Maoists, by giving false promises, ended monarchy and have brought the nation to economic disaster in the last 17 years. At least 100 protesters have been detained by police. Agitators alleged that they were staging a protest when police, from the roof of a high-rise building, fired tear gas shells. Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s government has decided to act tough and has blamed the former King for inciting protests. Oli alleged that ex-King Gyanendra Shah was inciting people to indulge in violence.  The ground reality is quite different. There have been 14 governments in Nepal during the last 17 years. K P Sharma Oli became Prime Minister four times, while former Maoist leader Pushpa Dahal Kamal Prachandra and Sher Bahadur Deuba, each became PM twice. For 17 years, no single party got majority, and after every elections, governments were formed through coalitions.  Those who came to power used power to misappropriate money from the exchequer. The people of Nepal are now dejected. They are demanding a return to the old system of monarchical democracy.  81 per cent of the population in Nepal is Hindu. Nepal was a Hindu state 17 years ago. The pro-monarchy protesters are also demanding that Nepal be again declared a Hindu state.

‘Misusing his face’: Tejashwi Yadav accuses BJP of ‘controlling’ Nitish Kumar

NEW DELHI: RJD leader and key rival to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav, on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the ruling NDA in Bihar, alleging that Kumar’s face is being “misused” while the BJP holds control over the government.
Speaking to ANI, Tejashwi said, “I have even worked with the chief minister. I am concerned about seeing him in this condition… But people are misusing his face. BJP is controlling, they have hijacked. They are imposing their manifesto as per their wish.”
Targeting JD(U) leader Lalan Singh, he further added, “It is clear that Lalan Singh belongs to BJP, mentally as well as physically. He belongs to BJP by his heart and mind. CM’s face is only being used.”
Addressing a press conference on the same day, Tejashwi sharpened his attack on the BJP, claiming that the people of Bihar are prepared to vote out the government that has ruled for two decades.
“You all know that elections are going to be held in Bihar. Whether it will happen or not is in the hands of BJP when the BJP signals the Election Commission, then elections will be held. But this time, the people of Bihar have made full preparations to give a reply to the 20-year-old government, and this time the people have made up their mind and this time, change is going to happen. All the BJP leaders from across the country will visit Bihar. BJP has a tradition that these people visit the state where elections are held, although this is their own decision,” he said.

‘Chandrababu Naidu is in favour of Muslims’: TDP announces support for Waqf Amendment Bill

    TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu

NEW DELHI: Chandrababu Naidu‘s Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a key ally of the NDA government at the Centre, has announced support for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill ending days of speculation on the legislation which several opposition parties and Muslim organisations are opposing calling it unconstitutional and against the interests of the community.
“The whole Muslim community is waiting for the Waqf Amendment Bill to be tabled. Our party will support it. Chandrababu Naidu has already mentioned that we will work in interests of the Muslim community. Tomorrow, the bill will be tabled, only then we will make any comments on it. I assure you that Chandrababu Naidu is in favour of Muslims,” TDP national spokesperson Prem Kumar Jain said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, also called the ‘Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development (UMEED) Bill’, will be tabled in Lok Sabha tomorrow. The Bill aims to address key challenges in the management of Waqf properties by introducing reforms such as digitisation, enhanced audits, improved transparency, and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties.
For the BJP, which lacks majority in Lok Sabha, TDP’s strong backing comes as a big boost to its effort to get the Bill passed in the Budget session. The BJP asserts that the Bill will benefit the poor Muslims.
Shouldn’t be implemented with retrospective effect: JD(U)
Another key ally of the BJP, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) has demanded that the bill should not implemented with retrospective effect and hoped that the government would consider it.
“Nitish Kumar has been working in Bihar for the last 19 years. During this time, the work he has done for the Muslim community is also visible. Our party had said that it should not be implemented with retrospective effect, and we hope that the government will consider it… As long as Nitish Kumar is in politics, the interests of the people will be protected,” JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha said.
“A delegation of the Muslim community met Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and expressed their concerns regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Nitish Kumar asks party representatives to raise these concerns in the JPC and party representative Dileshwar Kamait raised these concerns in the JPC. Surely, these suggestions must have been taken into consideration as well,” party leader Rajeev Ranjan said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on April 2 (Wednesday) soon after the Question Hour and will be followed by a comprehensive and detailed discussion extending up to eight hours, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday.
“Some members wanted six hours, others wanted four hours. However, the Opposition demanded 12 hours for the discussion, but a broad consensus was reached for an eight-hour-long discussion on the bill,” the minister for minority affairs said.
“Depending on the sense of the House, the Speaker could take the decision to extend it as well,” he added.
Kiren Rijiju had earlier briefed BJP spokespersons on the Waqf Amendment Bill at the party’s headquarters yesterday. During the meeting, Rijiju presented a detailed overview of the bill, highlighting its benefits for the Muslim community. Rijiju asserted that the bill doesn’t interfere with religious institutions’ freedom and is designed to give rights to those who previously lacked them. The bill aims to reform Waqf management, enhancing transparency and digitization.

NEW DELHI: Gold smuggling accused actor Ranya Rao on Tuesday approached Karnataka high court for bail, days after a sessions court in Bengaluru rejected her plea for relief, news agency ANI reported.
Rao’s lawyer BS Girish submitted the petition, which the high court will take up next week.
The rejection by the sessions court of Rao’s bail plea was the third for the Kannada actor, who also faced setbacks in the Special Court for Economic Offences, followed by a magistrate court.
Rao, stepdaughter of K Ramachandra Rao, a DGP-rank officer of Karnataka Police, was apprehended at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport following her arrival from Dubai, on March 3. Authorities found gold bars concealed in a belt she was wearing.
The actor is accused of smuggling 14.2 kg gold worth Rs 12.56 crore.
Authorities suspect a “wider” smuggling network, as Ranya was found to have visited four trips to Dubai within 15 days before her arrest.
Sahil Jain, a Ballari-based gold dealer, is the second individual arrested in the case. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Jain for allegedly helping Rao dispose of the smuggled gold and share the proceeds.
He was taken into custody on March 27.

It is now confirmed to make a comeback and launch a range of new premium smartphones in the country. These smartphones will be manufactured locally in India. Apart from production, the brand is eyeing to build a nationwide service network to ensure customer support.
