  • ChatGPT Studio Ghibli Image Generation Now Available To Free Users

ChatGPT’s image generation feature is now available to free users, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said. The decision came after days of an unprecedented response to the new feature, generating AI images, particularly the iconic Studio Ghibli-inspired art, on social media.

Until now, the AI image generation feature was available only to paid subscribers under the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans. Free users were restricted to generating a maximum of three images per day. Following the feature’s massive popularity among premium users, OpenAI has extended it to all free-tier accounts.

Sam Altman wrote on X, “ChatGPT image gen now rolled out to all free users.”

Before the announcement, he said he wanted “everyone to use it.” “We will not do anything silly like saying that you can’t use our open model if your service has more than 700 million monthly active users. We want everyone to use it,” he wrote on X.

The rollout began on March 26, and as of April 1, all ChatGPT users – regardless of subscription – can now access the tool. The feature is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.

Mr Altman said the rollout of image generation to free-tier users triggered an explosive surge in new accounts. He said, “The ChatGPT launch 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments I’d ever seen, and we added one million users in five days. We added one million users in the last hour.”

Earlier, Mr Altman, in response to the mounting pressure on OpenAI’s infrastructure, appealed to users, saying, “Can y’all please chill on generating images? This is insane, our team needs sleep.”

To manage the situation, OpenAI introduced temporary rate limits on image generation. Mr Altman explained the issue in another post saying the number of requests had put immense strain on the company GPUs (graphics processing units) and were “melting.”

How To Use Image Regeneration In ChatGPT

    1. Generate an initial image using a text prompt.
    2. Modify the prompt (like, “Make the sky red instead of blue”).
    3. Hit the “regenerate” option to get an updated version of the image.
    4. Compare and refine – repeat the process until the desired result is achieved.
  • Hyderabad University Land Row Widens, BJP Team Stopped From Visiting Campus

Hyderabad University Land Row Widens, BJP Team Stopped From Visiting Campus

A BJP delegation was blocked from visiting the Hyderabad Central University campus this morning after the students protesting against the redevelopment of 400 acres of land near the university clashed with the police in Congress-ruled Telangana.

Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, the BJP’s floor leader in the Telangana assembly who would have led the delegation, told news agency PTI that the police did not let him step out of his house – that too without providing any notice. Other BJP leaders were also stopped from leaving their houses, he claimed.

Videos showed the police detaining BJP MLAs outside their state headquarters to prevent them from proceeding towards the university.

Read: Explained: The Congress-BRS Row Over 400 Acres Near Hyderabad University

“The government can bring money from wherever it wants, but it cannot generate another land adjacent to the university. They should withdraw their thoughts of selling those 400 acres of land,” BJP MLA Payal Shankar told ANI.

The BJP’s entry into the matter widens the political row after the BRS accused the police of manhandling the protesting students.

The government has made a heavy police deployment around the university campus as the Students Union vowed to continue the protest and boycott their classes until bulldozers and police personnel were removed from the campus.

They have also demanded a written assurance from the government that the land would be formally registered under the university.

Read: Tension At Hyderabad University Over Bulldozers On Land Next To Campus

The government, which claims ownership of the land adjacent to the university campus, had reportedly issued an auction proposal to set up an IT park. It had asserted the redevelopment would bring in investment, but students insist this would cause environmental damage, killing the flora and fauna.

The situation escalated on Sunday when bulldozers arrived to flatten the land. The students raising “go back” slogans climbed atop the heavy machines, which led to a face-off with the police. Dozens were detained but later released.

Justifying the police action, an official accused the students of obstructing government officials from carrying out their work.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy earlier said the land had no connection to the university and the students were being instigated. As the matter took a political turn, the BRS trained its guns at the Congress, accusing their top leader Rahul Gandhi of spreading hatred on the pretext of “Mohabbat ki Dukaan”.

“The government knew Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were Holidays, which is why they chose to cut down 400 acres forests killing green space and wildlife. Students of University of Hyderabad are requesting environmentalists to speak to save the HCU forests,” said BRS MLA KT Rama Rao yesterday.

Chota Char Dham Yatra: Uttarakhand’s 4 Sacred Temples For A Soul-Stirring Journey

Perched in the mystical mountains of Uttarakhand, the Chota Char Dham Yatra is far more than just a sacred journey — it’s a perfect mix of devotion, adventure, and awe-inspiring scenery. Whether you’re looking to seek blessings or simply soak in the raw beauty of the Himalayas, this pilgrimage to four revered temples — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — offers an experience like no other. From gushing rivers and snow-capped peaks to age-old legends and spiritual serenity, every step of this journey feels both humbling and exhilarating, making it a must for seekers of both faith and unforgettable travel moments.

Also Read: Navratri 2025: 8 Must-Visit Durga Temples In India For The Spiritual Souls

Here Are Uttarakhand’s 4 Most Reverred Temples:

    1. Yamunotri

The Yatra kicks off at Yamunotri, the source of the sacred Yamuna River. Surrounded by rugged peaks and glaciers, the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna is a sight to behold. The highlight? The natural hot springs of Surya Kund, where devotees cook rice and potatoes as an offering to the goddess. The trek to Yamunotri, often braved by ponies and palanquins, is both challenging and rewarding, with the roar of the river keeping you company along the way.

    2. Gangotri

A few hours’ drive from Yamunotri lies Gangotri, the legendary birthplace of the Ganges. Perched at 3,100 metres, this temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is steeped in mythology — it’s believed that King Bhagirath’s penance brought the river down from the heavens. While the temple itself is serene, the true spectacle is the Bhagirathi River, flowing fiercely through the rocky terrain. A short trek to Gaumukh, the glacier from which the Ganges originates, is a spiritual experience like no other, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

    3. Kedarnath

Kedarnath, the most remote of the four temples, is where faith and endurance go hand in hand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this 12th-century stone temple stands against the backdrop of snow-clad mountains, creating a picture-perfect setting. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is no easy feat, but every step is worth it when you finally catch sight of the temple. Pilgrims believe that touching the Kedarnath lingam washes away lifetimes of karma, and after witnessing the sheer beauty of the place, it’s hard not to feel spiritually moved.

    4. Badrinath

The final stop is Badrinath, a vibrant town nestled between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a colourful contrast to the stark, icy surroundings. Legend has it that Adi Shankaracharya established the temple in the 8th century, and it has remained a beacon of devotion ever since. The hot springs of Tapt Kund, just outside the temple, offer a welcome respite from the cold, while a visit to Mana, the last village before the India-Tibet border, adds an extra touch of adventure to the trip.

Weather In Darjeeling (Best Time To Visit Darjeeling):

Darjeeling’s weather is as charming as its scenery, but timing your visit right makes all the difference. The best months to visit are March to May (spring) and October to November (autumn) when the skies are clear, and the temperature is just right for sightseeing. Winters (December to February) bring chilly weather, sometimes dropping below zero, making it ideal for those who love the cold. Monsoons (June to September) are beautiful but unpredictable, with heavy rainfall and frequent landslides, so unless you enjoy misty, rainy days, it’s best to avoid this season.

    How To Reach Darjeeling:

    By Air

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport, about 70 km away. From there, taxis and shared cabs are easily available for the three-hour scenic drive up to Darjeeling.

    By Rail

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest major railway station. From NJP, you can take a direct taxi or board the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train), a slow but charming journey through the hills.

    By Road

Buses and shared jeeps run regularly from Siliguri, NJP, and Bagdogra to Darjeeling. The drive up the hills, with its winding roads and stunning views, is an experience in itself.

    Getting Around In Darjeeling:

Walking is the best way to enjoy Darjeeling’s charming streets, but for longer distances, shared jeeps and private taxis are available. The Toy Train also offers short joy rides between Darjeeling and Ghum, adding a nostalgic touch to your trip.

Open AI CEO Sam Altman Reshares Ghibli-Style Images Of PM Modi, Drops Emoji

OpenAI’s latest image-generation update has unleashed a wave of creativity on social media, transforming it into a vibrant Ghibli art fest. The internet is now filled with stunning watercolour-like landscapes, hand-drawn character portraits with expressive eyes, and intricate details reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s iconic style. This viral trend is all thanks to OpenAI’s newest tool, which can generate highly detailed images with minimal input.

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reshared a post from the Government of India’s official account, MyGov, on X. The post featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s images recreated in the iconic Studio Ghibli style, showcasing him in various moments, such as shaking hands with former US President Donald Trump, posing with French President Emmanuel Macron, playing with lion cubs, and visiting the Ram Lalla temple in Ayodhya. Mr Altman reshared the post, accompanied by an Indian flag emoji.

“Main character? No. He’s the whole storyline. Experience through New India in Studio Ghibli strokes,” the post by MyGov read.

    See the post here:

In another tweet, Mr Altman also announced that ChatGPT’s image generation feature is now available to all users, including those on the free version. This update comes amid the massive popularity of Ghibli-style images, which have taken social media by storm. The CEO revealed that the AI platform gained one million new users in just an hour.

Notably, the ChatGPT Ghibli image generation tool allows users to transform their photos into stunning Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork. This feature is part of ChatGPT’s latest update, which includes a powerful image generation model that can produce highly accurate and stylized visuals.

The response to this feature has been overwhelming, with users generating millions of Ghibli-style images within hours. Even celebrities are joining in on the trend, sharing their own transformed images on social media.

However, the images have also sparked a heated debate. While some are impressed by the AI’s ability to create stunning artwork, many argued that OpenAI is exploiting Ghibli’s signature style without properly crediting the original creators. Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has been particularly vocal about his opposition to AI-generated animation. In a resurfaced video, he called it “an insult to life itself,” highlighting the long-standing debate over AI’s impact on traditional artistry.

  • Rajasthan Nitrogen Gas Leak: Factory Owner Dies, 40 Hospitalised

One person died and 40 others were affected in a nitrogen gas leak from a tanker parked inside the warehouse of an acid factory in Rajasthan’s Beawar.

The incident, which occurred around 10 pm on Monday at Sunil Trading Company in the Badiya area under the Beawar police station, also resulted in the deaths of several pets and stray animals.

The person who died was the factory owner, Sunil Singhal, who tried throughout the night to control the gas leak but succumbed to its effects. His health deteriorated, and he was referred to a hospital in Ajmer, where he later passed away.

According to sources, nitrogen gas leaked from a tanker stored in the company’s warehouse. The leak was so severe that within seconds, the gas spread to the nearby residential areas, impacting the people inside their homes. Many residents experienced suffocation and eye irritation, leading to over 60 people being rushed to government and private hospitals in Beawar for treatment. Upon receiving the information, police, administrative officials, including DM, SP, and fire brigade teams, managed to control the gas leakage by around 11 pm.

As a precautionary measure, authorities evacuated the surrounding area to prevent further casualties. The administration continues to monitor the situation closely. Although the gas’s impact has subsided, a sense of panic still lingers among residents.

District Collector Dr Mahendra Khadgawat has ordered the sealing of the factory and directed the police to register a case immediately. Authorities are investigating the cause of the leak and assessing further safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Ward councilor Hansraj Sharma stated that residents informed him about a gas leak from a local acid factory. He promptly alerted the fire brigade and administration. The fire brigade team arrived at the scene and managed to contain the leakage by 11 pm. SDM Divyansh Singh, who was present at the site, confirmed that the leaked gas was nitrogen.

The administration assured nearby residents that the situation was under control. Authorities have also ordered a safety inspection of the acid factory to prevent future incidents.

Due to gas leakage, the people living around the chemical factory were having difficulty breathing. To reduce the effect of the gas, the local administration and fire department employees who reached the spot poured water on the tanker and closed the lid, after which the situation was controlled. This incident spread panic in the entire area. The administration has instructed people to be cautious and take necessary safety measures to avoid any further accidents. The treatment of the gas-affected people was going on. At the same time, the administration team started investigating the accident

UK Firm Trashes New York Times Report On “Sensitive Tech Transfer” To Russia Via HAL

British aerospace manufacturer HR Smith Group has slammed a New York Times report that accused it of transferring sensitive technology to a blacklisted agency supplying Russia with weapons via an Indian state-run company. The allegations are “entirely false”, the company told NDTV, echoing responses from Indian government sources trashing the charges against them and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a government-owned aerospace company.

“These allegations made by the New York Times are entirely false. HR Smith Group takes its supply chain obligations extremely seriously and follows all applicable export controls. We maintain rigorous supplier oversight and supply chain monitoring to uphold the highest standards of compliance,” said a company spokesperson.

The alleged products exported to India were for use in a satellite-based search and rescue network that supports life-saving operations across land, sea, and air. They “are not designed for military use”, it asserted.

The Group said they were not provided any evidence to support the claim that its products were shipped to Russia.

“The only apparent connection is a common Harmonized System code – an international product classification number used for customs purposes, covering a wide range of products. This code alone does not show what the product is or where it originates from and therefore cannot be used to establish a link, which the New York Times has misleadingly done,” it said.

The NYT article that ran with the headline “Major Donor to Reform U.K. Party Sold Parts Used In Weapons to Russian Supplier” had accused HR Smith Group of selling transmitters, cockpit equipment, and other sensitive technologies worth nearly $2 million to Russia.

Both the UK and US had banned such sales in the wake of the Ukraine war.

Some of the shipments reportedly went via Hindustan Aeronautics Limited – and had the “same identifying product codes”. The report claimed that HAL received 118 shipments from HR Smith Group between 2023 and 2024, and sent 13 shipments of the same products to Rosoboroneexport, a Russian arms agency blacklisted by the US and UK, during the same period.

HAL has not yet responded to the charges.

Government sources had earlier told NDTV that the report was “factually incorrect and misleading”. Accusing the US-based outlet of trying to “distort facts to suit a political narrative”, they said HAL had followed all international obligations on strategic trade controls.

The sources also urged “reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports.”

NDTV Exclusive: Over 300 Workers Trapped Under Bangkok Skyscraper Rubble, Sources Say

Signs of life were detected in the ruins of the 30-story skyscraper that collapsed in Bangkok following the deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck neighboring Myanmar last week. According to official figures, as many as 74 people are feared to be still buried in the rubble, however, sources told NDTV that the number can be as high as 300 to 400.

So far, 13 bodies have been pulled out from the rubble of the unfinished tower, which was being built for Thailand’s State Audit Office by a Chinese company and a Thai construction firm. Rescuers were continuing search and rescue efforts on Tuesday to find people trapped three days after a massive quake in Southeast Asia that killed at least 2,000.

Officials and locals, who did not wish to be named, told NDTV that most of the construction workers buried under the debris are from neighbouring Myanmar, which has been ravaged by four years of civil war sparked when the army ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government in 2021.

“At least 50-60 people trapped in the rubble are Burmese. Myanmar is one of the poorest countries in Asia, and a lot of workers come to  Bangkok for menial jobs,” they said.

Meanwhile, Thai authorities have started investigating a Chinese-backed company over the collapse of the skyscraper, the only Bangkok building to completely crumble by the massive tremors. Thailand’s anti-corruption watchdog had earlier flagged to authorities irregularities it found in the construction of the building before it collapsed.

A Reuters report said that tests have found that the materials gathered at the site indicated the presence of substandard steel among the wreckage, which has been sent for further analysis. A report on this is expected to arrive this week.

Construction of the building began in 2020 and is being carried out by a joint venture between Italian Thai Development PCL and China Railway Number 10 (Thailand) Ltd, a local unit of China’s state-owned China Railway Group.

The construction has been on a halt for a long time and restarted recently. The government had threatened to cancel the project in January due to delays and potential corner-cutting.

Thai police on Sunday detained four Chinese nationals, who were employed by the construction company, trying to remove important documents from their office at the collapse site.

    Rescue Efforts Underway

Scanning machines and sniffer dogs have been deployed at the unfinished skyscraper, and Bangkok’s Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej said rescuers were urgently working out how to access an area where signs of life had been detected, three days on from the quake.

Realistic chances of survival diminish after 72 hours, she said, adding: “We have to speed up. We’re not going to stop even after 72 hours.”

In central Myanmar, rescuers freed four people, including a pregnant woman and a girl, from collapsed buildings in the city of Mandalay near the epicentre of Friday’s earthquake.

Commercial LPG Cylinders Get Cheaper By Rs 41 From Today

Oil marketing companies have announced a reduction in the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG gas cylinders by Rs 41, effective from Tuesday.

In Delhi, the retail sale price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder is Rs 1762 from today.

Earlier, on February 1, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders were reduced by Rs 7.

Meanwhile, oil companies regularly revise LPG prices based on changes in global crude oil rates and other factors. The prices of domestic LPG cylinders, which are used for household cooking, remain unchanged in this revision.

In December, the oil companies increased the rates of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 62. These price adjustments are expected to impact commercial establishments and small businesses that rely heavily on LPG for their operations.

The revision comes as part of a broader trend in fuel price adjustments in response to changing global market conditions, seen in recent days due to volatile international order.

This price revision will directly impact restaurants, hotels, and other commercial establishments that utilise these cylinders for daily operations. Despite the increase in commercial LPG prices, there has been no change in domestic LPG cylinder rates, offering some relief to households.

LPG prices vary from state to state, depending on local taxes and transportation costs. Businesses across the country will benefit from the reduced rates, though the change is marginal.

  • April Fools’ Day 2025: Why Is It Celebrated On April 1? Know About Its History And Origin

April Fools’ Day 2025: Why Is It Celebrated On April 1? Know About Its History And Origin

April Fools’ Day History and Origin: April 1st is celebrated worldwide as April Fools’ Day, a day filled with laughter, jokes, and happiness. On his day, people play harmless pranks on their loved ones, coming up with creative ideas to surprise them, only to reveal the truth later. People often shout “April Fools!” to reveal the joke, and it’s become a popular tradition across the globe.

April Fools’ Day has been celebrated by various cultures through the centuries. TV shows and media outlets have also been known for dropping jokes and pranks on this day.

History and Origin of April Fools’ Day

April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for centuries, but its exact origin remains a mystery. One theory suggests it dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, moving the start of the new year from April 1 to January 1. As a result, people who continued to celebrate the new year on April 1 were mocked as “April fools.”

Another theory links April Fools’ Day to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, celebrated on March 25 to honor the goddess Cybele. The festival involved people dressing up in disguises and mocking fellow citizens, which may have inspired the modern-day pranks.

In Scotland, April Fools’ Day became a two-day event, with “hunting the gowk” on the first day, where people were sent on phony errands, and “Tailie Day” on the second day, involving pranks played on people’s derriere.

The first written records of April Fools’ Day in England date back to 1686, when biographer John Aubrey described April 1 as “Fooles holy day”. By the 18th century, the tradition had spread throughout Britain, and by the 19th century, it had become widespread and popular. Despite its unclear origins, April Fools’ Day has become an international phenomenon, celebrated with pranks, hoaxes, and jokes on April 1 every year.

    Celebrations:

April Fools’ Day is a celebration that reminds us to laugh at ourselves and find humour in life. It’s a welcome break from our daily routines, allowing us to have fun and be playful. The day is all about sharing lighthearted jokes, playing harmless pranks, and enjoying good company. It is advised to keep the pranks harmless as the occasion is all about having fun and sharing a great moment. One should also not spread misinformation in the garb of playing pranks, as it can spoil the occasion.

Prioritise laughter, playfulness, and enjoyment, making the day a positive experience for everyone involved.

  • US Government To Review $9 Billion Harvard Funding Over ‘Anti-Semitism’

US Government To Review $9 Billion Harvard Funding Over ‘Anti-Semitism’

The US government will review $9 billion of funding for Harvard University over alleged anti-Semitism on campus, authorities said Monday, after it cut millions from Columbia University, which has also seen fierce pro-Palestinian student protests.

President Donald Trump has aggressively targeted prestigious universities that saw bitter protests sparked by Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, stripping their federal funds and directing immigration officers to deport foreign student demonstrators, including those with green cards.

Officials would look at $255.6 million in contracts between Harvard and the government, as well as $8.7 billion in multi-year grant commitments to the prestigious Ivy League institution, the General Services Administration said in a statement.

Critics argue that the Trump administration’s campaign is retributive and will have a chilling effect on free speech, while its supporters insist it is necessary to restore order to campuses and to protect Jewish students.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon said “Harvard’s failure to protect students on campus from anti-Semitic discrimination — all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry — has put its reputation in serious jeopardy.”

“Harvard can right these wrongs and restore itself to a campus dedicated to academic excellence and truth-seeking, where all students feel safe on its campus,” she added.

In a statement, Harvard president Alan Garner said: “If this funding is stopped, it will halt life-saving research and imperil important scientific research and innovation.”

“The government has informed us that they are considering this action because they are concerned that the University has not fulfilled its obligations to curb and combat antisemitic harassment.”

Garner objected to this characterization, saying the university “strengthened our rules and our approach to disciplining those who violate them” over the past 15 months as a means of addressing anti-Semitism on campus.

Trump has also targeted New York’s Columbia University, initially putting $400 million of funding under review, detaining for deportation a graduate student linked to the protests, and seeking to arrest others.

Columbia then announced a package of concessions to the government around defining anti-Semitism, policing protests and oversight for specific academic departments.

They stopped short, however, of meeting some of the more strident demands of the Trump administration, which nonetheless welcomed the Ivy League college’s proposals.

“Today’s actions by the Task Force follow a similar ongoing review of Columbia University,” said Monday’s official statement.

“That review led to Columbia agreeing to comply with nine preconditions for further negotiations regarding a return of cancelled federal funds.”

  • Liquor Ban In Madhya Pradesh’s Religious Cities Takes Effect

Liquor Ban In Madhya Pradesh’s Religious Cities Takes Effect

A ban on liquor in 19 religious cities and areas under select gram panchayats in Madhya Pradesh, including Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Maihar, came into effect on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described it as a “historic step towards de-addiction”.

The CM had announced the liquor ban decision and it was approved by the cabinet on January 24 at its meeting held in Maheshwar town, a place closely associated with legendary medieval-era queen Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar.

According to the decision, all liquor shops and bars will be closed down in the entire urban limits of Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Orchha, Maihar, Chitrakoot, Datia, Panna, Mandla, Multai, Mandsaur and Amarkantak and in the gram panchayat limits of Salkanpur, Kundalpur, Bandakpur, Barmankalan, Barmankhurd and Linga, an official said.

The BJP government has declared these 19 urban and rural areas as “completely sacred”, and imposed a total ban on liquor under their jurisdiction.

Mr Yadav in a statement said the government has taken a “historic step towards de-addiction” and cited “public faith and religious reverence” associated with these cities and rural areas as reasons for the move.

The religious places where the liquor ban takes effect from Tuesday are spread across one municipal corporation, half-a-dozen municipal councils and an equal number of village panchayats.

Among these, Ujjain houses the famous Mahakal Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, while Amarkantak is the origin of the Narmada river, which is considered the lifeline of the state.

  • Japan Confirms The Beginning Of Cherry Blossom Aka Sakura Season For 2025

If you have been planning a trip to Japan, now might be the perfect time! The world-famous cherry blossom season is in full swing at this popular tourist hotspot. On Monday (March 24), the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that the 2025 cherry blossom season has officially begun in Tokyo. Cherry blossoms, or sakura, typically reach full bloom between late March and early April. The agency reported spotting six cherry blossom buds on the verge of blooming at Yasukuni Shrine, Tokyo’s official sakura sample tree – an iconic marker signalling the start of the season.

To track the bloom, the Japan Meteorological Agency monitors about 50 designated cherry trees across the country. From the first buds appearing to the final petals falling, sakura blossoms typically last around two weeks. The Japan Weather Association attributes the early bloom to recent warm temperatures, which have sped up the process. Peak bloom is expected within the next 10 days, but if temperatures remain high, it could arrive even sooner.

The cherry blossom season announcement comes just a day after Japan witnessed its first bloom of the year in the southwestern city of Kochi, on the island of Shikoku.

Five Must-Visit Spots To Experience Cherry Blossom In Japan:

    1. Yoshino, Kansai – Famous for its breathtaking hillside covered in sakura trees.

    2. Maruyama Park, Kyoto – A perfect spot for nighttime cherry blossom viewing.

    3. Hirosaki Park, Tohoku – Known for its stunning castle backdrop and vibrant sakura.

    4. Fuji Five Lakes, Yamanashi – Offers a mesmerizing view of cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji.

    5. Yoyogi Park, Tokyo – A popular gathering place for hanami (flower viewing) picnics.

How Japanese Celebrate Cherry Blossom Season?

The Japanese celebrate the sakura season in their own unique ways — strolling under the falling petals, enjoying picnics beneath the pink canopy and even finding inspiration in poetry and literature, where cherry blossoms symbolize life, death and renewal.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and book your flight to the Land of the Rising Sun for an unforgettable Sakura experience.

  • Sensex Slides 530 Points As Markets Open Lower Over Trump Tariff Jitters

Sensex Slides 530 Points As Markets Open Lower Over Trump Tariff Jitters

Indian stocks faced heavy selling pressure on Tuesday’s opening as both indices fell amid the April 2 tariff threat.

The Nifty 50 index declined 178 points, or 0.76 per cent, to open at 23,341.10, while the BSE Sensex opened at 76,878.59, with a decline of 536.33 points, or 0.69 per cent.

Experts stated that the Trump tariff announcement on April 2 is the major event now. However, the markets have discounted the impact, but the reality will seem worse initially and then improve as concessions and exclusions are announced.

Ajay Bagga, a Banking and Market Expert, told ANI, “For now, the consensus view is that 15 per cent to 20 per cent tariffs on all countries will be announced on April 2nd, and then the process of negotiating exclusions will begin. The markets will remain on edge, but any of three outcomes- Postponement of universal tariffs, lesser quantum of tariffs or wider exclusions- will see a sharp market rebound. We would stay cautious given the event-heavy next few days and would advise traders to keep position sizes small and stop losses tight.

He further added, “US markets had a dismal Q1, but the key question facing the markets is how much of the Trump Tariff impact is already baked in. We feel that markets globally have overestimated the Trump Tariff impact, and the reality will seem worse and then improve as concessions and exclusions are announced.”

Among sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange, Nifty IT stocks faced the highest selling pressure, with the IT index declining more than 1.4 per cent. Nifty Media surged 0.98 per cent, while Nifty Auto gained 0.49 per cent. Other sectors largely opened flat or under pressure during the opening session.

In the Nifty 50 index, top gainers included Trent, which surged more than 4 per cent, while ONGC, Hero Moto, and IndusInd Bank also gained. The top losers included Infosys, TCS, and Shriram Finance.

Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities, “The Nifty’s ongoing retreat from last week’s highs is increasingly looking like a dip within a larger advance. This is because, so far, the last gap-up area of 23402 continues to remain protected. Additionally, the index is also getting support from a flattening 100-day average at current levels. So tactically, as long as we don’t breach the 23275 – 23402 zone, the 23869 swing high will remain the first upside target.”

In other Asian markets, stocks recovered on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up by 0.58 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng surged 1 per cent, Taiwan Weighted gained more than 2 per cent, and South Korea’s KOSPI index also gained more than 1.95 per cent.

  • US Secret Service nixed Pannun plan to serve Ajit Doval summons

NEW DELHI: A US court has observed that the service of delivery of summons to NSA Ajit Doval, who accompanied PM Narendra Modi during his visit to the US on February 12-13, was not completed during his stay there, brushing aside Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun’s claim that he managed to get the notice delivered to the top Indian security official.
The court was responding to a letter from Pannun’s lawyer which also revealed that US Secret Service agents guarding the Blair House, where the Indian delegation was put up, threatened to arrest his server when he tried to place the notice on the ground outside what is the president’s guest house. The server could only leave the summons with a nearby Starbucks store that didn’t prove to be enough for the court.
After reviewing the letter, a judge of the Southern District of New York said that “the complaint was not delivered to a member of the hotel management or staff or any officers or agents providing security for Defendant (Doval), as required by the court’s order”. The development confirms the Indian position that the NSA wasn’t served the summons, which foreign secretary Vikram Misri had described as based on unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations, during his stay in the US.
The summons was issued last year in September by a US court in response to a civil lawsuit filed by Pannun about an alleged murder plot against him for which American authorities had blamed an Indian government agent named Vikash Yadav. The Indian government has conducted a probe into the issue and recommended legal action against Yadav. Indian national Nikhil Gupta remains in US custody for his alleged involvement in the plot and his case will go to trial on November 3, 2025.
Pannun is said to have hired 2 process servers and one investigator to effect service on Doval in Washington DC during the latter’s 2-day trip to the US. According to the contents of the letter, the first server, identified as Ambiko Wallace, reached Blair House on February 12 at 7.22 pm and found it barricaded with a single checkpoint that was guarded by Secret Service agents. Wallace showed the legal document to an agent, but he would have none of it and forced the server to immediately leave the checkpoint.
Another individual named Wayne Engram, apparently a more enterprising process server with 15 years of experience, approached the agents next day at 12.15 pm. As the Secret Service again refused to accept any document, he tried to place the envelope on the ground before them – a “standard method of service” apparently. However, one of the agents told him that he would be arrested if he left the summons on the ground. It was then that Engram decided to leave the documents at the nearest public location where he would not be arrested. This happened to be a Starbucks approximately 100 feet from the checkpoint. “Mr. Engram left the service documents in a sealed envelope in the public seating area outside the Starbucks. Then he went back to the checkpoint, told the agents where he had left the documents, and asked them to please retrieve them and give them to Defendant as soon as possible,’’ says the letter. This clearly proved to be insufficient for the court. While all this was going on, the investigator hired by Pannun also spoke to Blair House staff and Secret Service over phone but was told there was no way to serve the Defendant there. They also refused to share any email that could be used for sharing the summons.
The Pannun murder plot threatened to snowball into a major diplomatic row last year, with the Biden administration not just seeking accountability but also backing similar charges by Canada over the murder of another Khalistan leader named Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Having recommended legal action against Yadav and pledging “functional improvements” in the system to deal with a matter like this, India will hope that the case will no longer act as an irritant in bilateral ties. Pannun, who was designated as a terrorist by India in 2020, is the spokesperson for Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a Khalistan group India wants the US to ban.

  • What does India look like from space? Sunita Williams answers

    File photo: AP

NEW DELHI: Indian-American Sunita Williams has shared her insights on how India looked from space during her nine-month long stay on the International Space Station (ISS), with a special mention of Himalayas, fishing fleet along the coast of Mumbai and Gujarat.
In a presser on Tuesday, Williams said, “India is amazing. Every time we went over the Himalayas, and I’ll tell you Butch got some incredible pictures of the Himalayas, so just amazing. You can see this ripple that happened obviously when the plates collided and then as it it flows down into India it’s many many colors.”
“I think when you come from the east going into like Gujarat and Mumbai, the fishing fleet that’s off the coast there gives you a little bit of a beacon that ‘here we come’,” she added.
Describing the country as a “network of lights”, Williams said, “Then all throughout India, I think the impression I had was it was just like this network of lights. Bigger cities going down through the smaller cities just incredible to look at at night as well as during the day, highlighted of course by the Himalayas which is just incredible uh as a forefront going down into India.”

  • ‘Will have no choice’: Iran warns it may have to acquire nukes if attacked

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (left) and Donald Trump (right)

An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader warned on Monday that the country may seek nuclear weapons if attacked by the United States or its allies. This statement came after US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran if it did not agree to a nuclear deal.
Ali Larijani, an adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told Iranian state TV that while Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons, an attack would leave it with no choice but to defend itself, news agency AFP reported. He said, “We are not moving towards (nuclear) weapons, but if you do something wrong in the Iranian nuclear issue, you will force Iran to move towards that because it has to defend itself.” “Iran does not want to do this, but … (it) will have no choice,” Larijani further said.
He added that Iran would have to reconsider its stance if the US or Israel launched an attack. “If at some point you (the US) move towards bombing by yourself or through Israel, you will force Iran to make a different decision.”
On Saturday, Trump warned, “there will be bombing” if Iran did not agree to a deal, according to NBC News. It was unclear whether he meant a direct US attack or an operation involving another country, such as Israel.
Ayatollah Khamenei also responded to Trump’s threat in a speech, sayung, “They threaten to do mischief. If it is carried out, they will definitely receive a strong counterattack.” Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, also sent a letter to the UN Security Council condemning what he described as “warmongering provocations.” He warned that Iran would “respond swiftly and decisively to any act of aggression or attack by the United States or its proxy, the Israeli regime.”
Following Trump’s comments, Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the Swiss charge d’affaires, who represents US interests in Iran.
General Amirali Hajizadeh, a senior commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, pointed to the presence of American bases and troops in the region. He cautioned, “The Americans have at least 10 bases in the region around Iran, and they have 50,000 troops.” He added, “Someone who is in a glass room shouldn’t throw stones at anyone.”
Since taking office in January, Trump has returned to his “maximum pressure” policy. In his first term, he withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement, which had required Iran to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Western countries, including the US, have long accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, though Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
The 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers required Iran to limit its nuclear processing in exchange for sanctions relief.

Why is Iran’s nuclear program a concern for the West?

Iran has long stated that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. However, its officials have increasingly hinted at the possibility of pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran is currently enriching uranium to 60% purity, a level close to weapons-grade, making it the only country without a declared nuclear weapons program to do so.
Under the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran was restricted to enriching uranium up to 3.67 per cent purity and maintaining a stockpile of no more than 300 kilograms (661 pounds). However, the latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that Iran’s uranium stockpile had reached 8,294.4 kilograms (18,286 pounds), with a portion of it enriched to 60 per cent.
While US intelligence agencies believe Iran has not yet started developing nuclear weapons, they acknowledge that Iran has taken steps that could allow it to build a nuclear device if it decides to proceed.

Why are relations between Iran and the US hostile?

Iran was once a close ally of the US in the Middle East under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who purchased American weapons and allowed the CIA to operate secret listening posts to monitor the Soviet Union. The shah’s rule had been strengthened by a 1953 CIA-backed coup.
However, in January 1979, as protests against the shah’s rule intensified and he battled cancer, he left Iran. This led to the Islamic Revolution, headed by Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, which established Iran’s theocratic government.
Later that year, university students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran, demanding the extradition of the shah. This triggered the 444-day hostage crisis and led to the severing of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, the US supported Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein. The conflict also included the “Tanker War,” in which the US launched a military assault that weakened Iran’s naval forces. Later, a US warship shot down an Iranian passenger plane.
Over the years, relations between the two countries have fluctuated between hostility and limited diplomacy. Tensions briefly eased when Iran agreed to the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. However, after Trump withdrew the US from the agreement, tensions escalated again and continue to this day.

Colossal fire erupts in Malaysia, apparently from a burst gas pipe

A colossal fire erupted on Tuesday (April 1, 2025) in a Malaysian suburb outside Kuala Lumpur, prompting evacuations of nearby homes.

The towering inferno near a gas station in Putra Heights in central Selangor state was visible for kilometers (miles).

Dozens of Selangor firefighters were sent to the scene. Department director Wan Mohamad Razali Wan Ismail was cited by The Star English-language newspaper as saying that firefighters on the ground identified a burst pipeline as the cause of the fire.

No further details were immediately available.

Pictures and videos of the fireball went viral on social media, with some residents saying they felt the doors and windows of their homes shaking believed to be due to the fire explosion earlier.

  • Why are tensions high in the Arctic? | Explained

Why are tensions high in the Arctic? | Explained

    The story so far:

International observers have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the Arctic, warning that if left unchecked, they could eventually spark conflict in the region.

    What is happening?

The Arctic, the northernmost area of the planet, has remained largely isolated for centuries. However, as climate change accelerates the melting of ice caps, new strategic opportunities are emerging for global powers. Beneath the frozen landscape lie untapped reserves of natural resources such as fossil fuels, rare earth elements, phosphates, and copper as well as lucrative fishing grounds.

Most of these resources are currently inaccessible due to the year-round ice barrier, but as climate change destroys the Arctic environment, these resources and nearby trade routes will become increasingly viable. Unlike the Antarctic, which is demilitarised and environmentally protected by a dedicated international treaty, the Arctic lacks similar legal safeguards and is primarily governed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This allows nations to claim territories in the region and deploy military infrastructure. In recent years, overlapping maritime claims and military posturing have exacerbated tensions.

    Who is in control?

The various islands and coastal areas in the Arctic are controlled by eight countries — Canada, Denmark (through Greenland), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the U.S. Together, these nations form the Arctic Council, an international body tasked with protecting the environment, conducting scientific research, and safeguarding the interests of indigenous peoples in the region. These nations exercise sovereignty over the Arctic land and can also exploit resources within their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). The waters between these territories fall under international jurisdiction, ensuring freedom of navigation.

According to UNCLOS, nations can extend their claims to the seabed beyond the 200-nautical-mile EEZ if they can prove that the area is a natural prolongation of their continental shelf. Canada, Denmark, and Russia have all submitted overlapping claims to the Arctic seabed to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. Despite these territorial declarations, infrastructure in the Arctic remains underdeveloped, with only a few operational ports along the coast. Among the Arctic Council members, Russia is the only country with a significant fleet of icebreakers, including one which is nuclear-powered, capable of navigating through the region’s treacherous sea ice.

    Where do the tensions arise?

For months, news headlines have reported on U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark. He has described the world’s largest island as a matter of “ national security” and has questioned the legitimacy of Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory. Greenland, which has been under Danish control for over 300 years, also hosts the U.S. Pituffik military base. In January, following Mr. Trump’s renewed interest, Denmark’s prime minster Mette Frederiksen has pledged to bolster Greenland’s security and embarked on a tour of European capitals to seek support from allies.

Additionally, tensions between the U.S. and Canada have risen following Mr. Trump’s controversial comments about annexing Canada. Both nations have long disputed the status of the Northwest Passage, a potential Arctic shipping route that winds through Canada’s Arctic Archipelago. Ottawa considers the passage part of its internal waters, granting it control over navigation, while Washington insists it falls under international jurisdiction, which means that any nation has freedom of navigation in the Passage.

Concerns over potential conflict also extend to Russia and the remaining Arctic Council members. These members, apart from Russia, all belong to NATO. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, relations within the Council have become increasingly strained. Russian officials, including Defence Committee of State Duma member Andrei Gurulyov, have suggested that Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard should fall under Russian control. Meanwhile, observer states of the Arctic Council, including India, are closely monitoring developments.

The U.K., for instance, has repeatedly emphasised the strategic importance of the Greenland-Iceland-U.K. (GIUK) gap, a critical choke point for NATO’s naval defences. This passage is the only feasible route for Russian submarines attempting to access the Atlantic to potentially disrupt NATO shipping in case of conflict, making it a focal point of Western military planning.

Why does the Arctic matter so much?

Aside from ongoing resource extraction, interest in the Arctic surged following a 2009 U.S. Geological Survey report estimating that the region holds 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil reserves and 30% of its untapped natural gas reserves. Most of these resources lie beneath the seabed, making maritime claims highly significant. Greenland also harbours some of the world’s richest deposits of rare earth elements, which drew significant investment interest from Chinese companies in the early 2020s. However, many of these projects were later suspended due to environmental concerns or U.S. political pressure.

The melting of Arctic sea ice has also prompted interest into the opening of new commercial trade routes. The Northeast Passage, which runs along Russia’s Arctic coast, is particularly critical for Chinese trade. This route, stretching from the Bering Strait to Norway, could reduce the maritime distance between East Asia and Europe by approximately 8,000 kilometres compared to the traditional route through the Suez Canal. Navigating commercial shipping through this passage could save Beijing billions in transportation costs. However, the so-called Polar Silk Road would require Russia to grant Chinese ships access to its Arctic ports, a prospect Moscow has so far approached with caution.

    What lies ahead?

Aside from political declarations and territorial claims, some nations have taken concrete steps to assert their Arctic ambitions. In 2007, Russia sent the MIR-1 submarine to the North Pole to plant a Russian flag on the seabed beneath the Arctic ice cap — a symbolic demonstration of its presence and capabilities. Moscow has also maintained a number of military bases in the Arctic, most of them dating back to the Soviet era. In 2022, it conducted joint naval exercises with Beijing in the East China Sea, which indicated strategic implications for Arctic security.

China has also steadily become more vocal about its Arctic interests, declaring itself a ‘Near-Arctic State’ in 2018 and planning the construction of its first nuclear-powered icebreaker. Since Sweden and Finland joined NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the alliance has intensified its military presence in the region, including large-scale exercises near the Russian border in Finland in 2024. Analysts have pointed out NATO’s limited operational capabilities in the Arctic, raising concerns about strategic imbalances. As temperatures continue to rise, tensions in the melting Arctic may soon reach a boiling point.
