The story unfolds with the background of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. It tells the story of a sensational homicide and robbery case in a small town in Hubei. Qin Gang, a dartman, died strangely and tragically. Soon after Deng Ting and his assistant Song Feiyan surveyed the scene, they identified the suspect as a man named Chen Tianhe.
