  • 12km ring road to curb traffic snarls in Ara town, says DM

12km ring road to curb traffic snarls in Ara town, says DM

Ara: People of Ara are likely to get much needed relief from traffic jams in the city by 2025 end as the Bhojpur district administration has expedited the process to build the proposed 12km-long four-lane ring road connecting several routes around the town. Union minister Nitin Gadkari had given his approval for the ring road in August 2021, on a proposal put forward by then Ara MP R K Singh.
According to officials, the ring road project is likely to cost around Rs 321 crore, but it may differ after the detailed project report (DPR) is prepared. The proposed road is expected to divert around 50,000 vehicles as around one lakh vehicles, coming from Rohtas, Kaimur and Buxar districts, travel through the middle of the Ara town daily.
Bhojpur DM Tanai Sultania, who inspected the proposed ring road routes on Saturday, told reporters: “The road project once completed will ease the traffic jam in the town as majority of the vehicles coming from others cities, which pass through the town, will be able to take the ring road route to reach their destinations.”
The DM said the routes that would be widened for the proposed ring road include, Asni to Patar, Patar to Bampali, Patar to Kayamnagar, Chandwa Mor to Dhanupra, Bhara to Raghu Tola, Baghutpur to Gangi and Baghutpur to Dharhara.
“The executive engineer of the Shahabad road division has been asked to prepare a DPR of these routes within three days. We will send the DPR to the department concerned and the work will start soon after the administrative approval of the proposal. The inspection of the Kayamnagar-Zero Mile route has already been done. There are eight roads that will be widened for the ring road. The work has already been started on four after acquisition of the additional land, while the process has been expedited on the remaining ones,” the DM said.
The general secretary of the Bhojpur chamber of commerce, Aaditya Vijay Jain, said, “This project will accelerate the economic progress in the region. The vehicles carrying goods that stuck in jam during the peak hours and festive season will reach on time, boosting our sale. Bhojpur chamber of commerce had also passed a resolution in 2007 for the construction of a ring road in Ara.”
Lack of adequate parking spaces and encroachments of the roads are the main reasons for frequent traffic jams in the Ara town, said Guddu Pandey, a local.

Western disturbances to bring rain and cold weather in state: Met office

Patna: Patna Meteorological Centre on Saturday predicted rainfall in around 12 districts on Sunday due to the ongoing western disturbances in the state. The entire region is also expected to witness a drop in temperature by 2-4°C after a couple of days. Two more western disturbances are likely to affect the Himalayan region at the beginning of the New Year, which may further bring down the temperatures in the state.
However, no significant rainfall was reported in the state till Saturday evening, as was predicted by the weather office earlier. “Rainfall in only traces was recorded at Dehri in Rohtas between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Saturday,” according to the evening weather report.
The Patna Met office further predicted rainfall in the north-eastern and south-eastern regions of the state on Sunday. “The north-eastern parts comprising seven districts of Kishanganj, Supaul, Madhepura, Saharsa, Araria, Purnia and Katihar, along with Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Khagaria, and Jamui in the south-eastern region, are expected to receive rainfall at one or two places on Sunday,” said the weather bulletin, adding that mostly dry weather was predicted for the state thereafter.
Meanwhile, the weather office also announced that two fresh western disturbances are likely to affect the western Himalayan region in succession from Jan 1 and Jan 3, respectively. These disturbances are expected to bring significant changes to the weather conditions in the state as well. “The western disturbances may bring in the desired level of cold wintry weather in the region that had remained elusive until now,” said the weathermen.
The weather office did not issue any warnings regarding fog or mist for the next six days in the state. However, shallow to medium fog was predicted for major parts of the state for the coming two days. “The temperature across the region is also expected to fall by 2-4°C after 48 hours,” the office added.

Police recruitment drive: 10 held for impersonation

Patna: In a crackdown on impersonation, 10 people were arrested for attempting to take the physical efficiency test (PET) on behalf of other candidates in the Bihar Police Constable recruitment drive. Four of the suspects were handed over to the police on Saturday while six others were sent to jail on Dec 27. The PET and document verification exercise is being carried out in the state capital since Dec 9 by the Central Selection Board (Constable Recruitment), officials said.
“To ensure an examination free from misconduct, candidates’ running, high jump and physical measurements (height, chest measurement, and weight) are being conducted through a computerised system. Biometric systems are being used to verify the candidates’ personal authenticity,” the official statement from the board said.
The board further revealed that 8,000 candidates were called for the PET in the third week, which concluded on Dec 28. However, only 6,375 candidates attended. During this period, a case was registered at Gardanibagh police station against 10 people for unauthorized entry and attempted impersonation.
In the written test, 107,079 candidates had been successful. The exam, held on multiple dates, was aimed at filling 21,391 vacancies for Bihar police constables. Approximately 1.78 million candidates had applied and about 1.2 million participated in the exam.
For the second phase of the recruitment process, which includes the PET and document verification, the successful candidates from the written test have been given the period from Dec 9, 2024 to March 10, 2025, to complete the process. The PET is being held at Shaheed Rajendra Prasad Singh Government High School (Patna High School) in the Gardanibagh police station area of Patna.MSID:: 116747077 413 |

Patna-Ara road: Drivers doze off, people suffer

Ara: The Patna-Ara-Chhapra road, a crucial artery for commuters and transporters alike, continues to be plagued by severe traffic jams. The problem, which seems insurmountable, is compounded by a surprising culprit — sleeping drivers.
During a visit to Koilwar police station on Friday, the personnel on duty recounted the challenges of managing the unrelenting chaos. “Despite the combined efforts of the district mining department, transport department and police personnel to ease the jams, some truck drivers park their vehicles haphazardly and fall asleep,” a senior officer, speaking anonymously, said. “It takes us three to four minutes to wake them up and move their vehicles into designated lanes. Worse, some drivers leave their trucks in the middle of the road to attend to nature’s call, forcing us to clear the jam they create,” he added, frustration evident in his tone.
The problem is not confined to unruly drivers. The slow progress of road construction, particularly on the Koilwar-Chhapra road near Babura under Barhara police station in Bhojpur district, is another major contributor. “This is one of the main reasons for the slow movement of traffic,” admitted another police personnel on duty.
Efforts by the authorities to tackle the situation have yielded limited results. Bhojpur SP Raj recently took to X, saying that senior officers have been instructed to remain present round the clock to manage traffic on the Koilwar-Bihta and Koilwar-Chhapra roads. “Last week alone, Rs 18 lakh in fines were collected in just three days from vehicles driving in the wrong lane,” Raj wrote in his post.
However, these measures have done little to alleviate the frustration of those caught in the jams, particularly truck drivers. Mohan, a truck driver stuck in a recent jam on the Koilwar bridge, said, “Sometimes, we are stuck for more than 24 hours. When our challan expires because of the jam, the police impose fines on us for no fault of ours. It is unfair.”
These jams also pose a grave risk to emergency services. Ambulances, school buses and other critical vehicles are often stranded, causing potential life-threatening delays. Chhotuji, a driver from Ara, said, “In emergencies, we have to take detours to reach Patna, wasting precious time that could save a patient’s life.”

Protesters also condemned the baton charge on BPSC aspirants in Patna.
The protesters observed a two-minute silence to pay tribute to Sonu Kumar (25), a BPSC aspirant from Patna who allegedly died by suicide recently. They also called for adequate compensation for his bereaved family.
RYA state secretary and Agiyaon MLA Shiv Prakash Ranjan said, “Today, Bihar seems to be in the grip of education and exam mafias. The state govt could not conduct the BPSC exam properly and fairly. Instead of arresting those responsible for paper leaks and malpractices, the state police are baton charging protesting BPSC aspirants. Getting quality education and employment is a fundamental right of students, but they are not getting their degrees on time and facing a shortage of teachers in colleges. The suicide of Sonu Kumar and the lathi charge on aspirants is a blot on the NDA govt. • Rose, marigold sale doubles on New Year: Florists

Patna: What could be better than a colourful and fragrant start to a new year?
With the world gearing up to say bye-bye to 2024 and ring in a fresh start, florists across the city are burning midnight oil to make the new year beautiful, colourful as well as fragrant, stocking up their shops not just with garlands and lose flowers for puja but bouquets for gifting.
Florists say mainly roses, marigold and tuberose (rajnigandha) do brisk business on New Year. “Red roses definitely sell like hot cakes but people buy marigold and ‘rajnigandha’ flowers and garlands for offering prayers in temples and homes on New Year,” says Manoj Malakar, president of Mali Malakar Kalyan Samiti (Patna).
Florist Chandan Kumar, who has a outlet on busy Fraser Road here, says sale of flowers, mainly roses and marigold, becomes double during this time as compared to normal days. “Our shops are empty by 2pm on the New Year day,” he says.
However, prices do not vary much as these are perishable items with short shelf-life, adds Chandan, saying they cannot charge much, as that would lower the demand.
For bouquets, Chandan says, people mainly prefer red roses on the occasion. “Many also buy red and yellow rosebuds, starting Rs 20 per piece. After roses, bouquets of carnations in various shades of red, white, yellow and pink are in huge demand on the New Year,” says Chandan, adding bouquets ranging between Rs 100 and Rs 500 are the most sought after.
“But there is no upper limit on the price tag for special bouquets, which mostly depends on the size and flowers opted by the purchasers,” says Chandan, adding, he sold a bouquet worth Rs 6,000 last year.
Keeping up with the online stores, he says they also provide home delivery of bouquets and flowers within a radius of 10km in Patna on orders above Rs 700.
Malakar adds a few customers order special bouquets, prepared as per their choice. “The most preferred flowers opted for preparing bouquets include rose, carnation, lily, orchid, daisy, hydrangea, chrysanthemum, daffodil, iris and cherry blossom.”
About the places from where they procure their stock of flowers, Chandan says it varies depending on the season. “In winter, we mainly buy from Pune and Kolkata, while in other seasons, we bring flowers from places like Delhi, Bengaluru, Nasik and Varanasi,” he says.
