  • ‘75% students of IIT-P get placement in top firms’

Patna: Even as the placement scenario in most of the technical institutions across the country appears to be bleak, the Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT-P) has been showing a somewhat better picture in the current season (2024-25). As of now, more than 75% students of the current graduating batch have already been placed in reputed companies, while the process of placement is still underway and it is likely to continue till June this year.
IIT-P’s academic dean A K Thakur said from the 2025 graduating batch, about 80% students of artificial intelligence and data science, and more than 75% students of computer science engineering have been placed so far and the companies are still recruiting the students. “The most remarkable development of the ongoing placement season is the fact that M Sc mathematics students of this institution have secured 100% placement. The average annual package offered so far in the current season is Rs21.40 lakh,” he said.
Thakur further pointed out that some of the top organisations which have recruited students from the campus this season, include Google, Nvidia, Intel, Media.net, Amazon, Accenture, BPCL, HPCL, BEL, and Sprinklr. And, many more companies are yet to come. Each year, 20 to 25 new companies are invited to recruit IIT-P students, he said.
IIT-P director T N Singh said since its inception in 2008, the institution has consistently improved its placement statistics in key aspects, including the number of visiting companies, diversity of recruiting sectors, job profiles, and salary packages.
“The institute’s training and placement cell (TPC) has actively engaged with companies from diverse national and international sectors, ensuring that the students have access to high-quality career opportunities. The number of visiting companies has been increasing year after year. While, only 106 companies had visited in 2019-20, the number of visiting companies increased to 215 in 2023-24. • MEA’s swift action brings man back home after 8 yrs in Saudi

Bhagalpur: For nearly eight years, Md Amiruddin of Salempur village, Bhagalpur, lived in limbo – stranded in Saudi Arabia after a road accident turned his life upside down. This Eid, he returned home, bringing tears, prayers and the kind of joy that only a miracle can deliver.
Amiruddin had moved to Riyadh in 2013 to work as a driver, hoping to support his family back home. But in Nov 2016, his parked vehicle was struck by a speeding car. Despite not being at fault, he was blamed, convicted and sentenced to 14 months in jail. The local court also imposed a penalty of 90,000 Riyals. After his release, his passport and driving licence remained confiscated, forcing him to survive as a daily-wage worker. He pleaded with authorities to return his documents, but no one listened.
Back in Bhagalpur, his family was growing desperate. It was in Aug last year that they reached out to S Z Hassan, SDO of Udakishunganj, who happened to be a Bhagalpur native. Hassan took up the matter, contacting the ministry of external affairs (MEA) and coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
The response was instant. With intervention from the Indian govt, the Saudi authorities waived the hefty fine and cleared Amiruddin’s exit. His travel back to India was arranged and on March 30 this year – just before Eid – he stepped foot in his village after more than a decade.
“My son has come back from ‘jhannum sey jannat’ (hell to heaven),” said his mother Bibi Sanower, feeding him biryani with hands that had not stopped trembling since his return. His brother, Md Kashif, called it “the biggest gift of Eid”.
Now back home for good, Amiruddin is warning others against chasing illusions abroad. “People should stop running after easy money in foreign lands. I am staying here and starting over,” he said.
SDO Hassan, while talking to this newspaper, called it a matter of humanity. “All I did was try to save a life. The real credit goes to the officials who acted promptly,” he added.

  • Waqf properties should be for benefit of poor: Governor

Agra: As Union minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in Lok Sabha, Bihar governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who was in Mathura on Wednesday, expressed his support for the proposed legislation. He said the bill would ensure that the benefit of waqf properties reaches impoverished people “for which these properties were intended,” contrary to the present situation where “affluent individuals have predominantly appropriated them.”
The bill to amend the legislation governing waqf boards proposes comprehensive changes to the 1995 Waqf Act, including ensuring Muslim women and non-Muslims representation in such bodies.
Khan, a former Union minister, was in Mathura to inaugurate two newly-renovated schools.
Talking to the media, Khan questioned the status of waqf properties in Mathura, asking, “how many properties are ‘waqf’, and how many charitable organisations operate on them?” Explaining the concept, he said ‘waqf’ means the original owner has dedicated the property to Allah, making Him the proprietor. “Who should have the primary right to use it?” he asked, stressing that waqf properties should benefit the most impoverished.
Discussing legal disputes over waqf properties, the Bihar governor said that “more than 90 % of these cases have spanned multiple generations.” Initially, the eldest son was appointed mutawalli (caretaker), but as families grew over 150 years, “today, 40-50 people are involved, with most of them feeling aggrieved.”
“Should these legal disputes go on forever while large properties remain unused for the poor?” he asked, adding that “powerful individuals had taken control of waqf properties, leaving the underprivileged with no benefits”.
According to its statement of objectives and reasons, the bill seeks to remove Section 40 of the current legislation, which relates to the board’s authority to determine if a property is a waqf property.

Bhagalpur: An FIR has been registered against 24 named and 250 unnamed people for blocking the NH-31, causing traffic jam and law and order problems on March 31. The home guard aspirants of Naugachia police district (a sub-division of Bhagalpur district) had staged a protest against their exclusion from the appointment process of home guard.
Sub division police officer (SDPO) of Naugachia, Omprakash, when contacted on Wednesday, he confirmed about the lodging of an FIR against 24 named and 250 unnamed people in connection with the protest.
Referring to the police action, the SDPO said, “Two among the protestors, including Prashant Kumar and Brajesh Kumar, have been arrested whereas the police investigation team is trying to identify the unnamed protestors on the basis of video footage of the demonstration and cross examination of the local people. Action against other named protestors is also underway.”
On the other hand, senior ADM and district commandant (Grih Raksha Vahini / Home Defense Corps) Harendra Kumar Singh said the notification for the selection of home guards for the three districts—Naugachia, Arwal and Bagaha — were not published in view of no vacancy in these districts.
The district commandant said there are already 301 home guards against the 200 sanctioned posts in Naugachia, hence, there is no vacancy for Naugachia. Similarly, Bagaha and Arwal districts also have sufficient number of home guards. In such scenario, the protest by the aspirants was unwarranted and unlawful.
Meanwhile, Naugachia police officials have taken the demonstration, including road blockade of NH 31 seriously, and have issued warning that no one would be allowed to disrupt traffic and create law-and-order situation under any situation.

  • LJP(RV) blames Paras for ‘ill-treatment’ of Ram Vilas’s first wife

Patna: Union minister Chirag Paswan‘s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) on Monday blamed his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras for alleged mistreatment meted out to his late father’s first wife.
According to LJP (RV) state president Raju Tiwari, the wives of Paras and his deceased younger brother Ram Chandra Paswan recently tried to evict Rajkumari Devi from their ancestral house in Khagaria district.
The Union minister’s late father Ram Vilas Paswan had tied the knot with Rajkumari Devi more than 20 years before marrying his mother Reena, who was based in Delhi.
According to Tiwari, “As soon as our national president learnt of the episode, he asked his nephew Prince Paswan to visit their ancestral village Sahar Banni and take stock of the situation.”
“We have been told that the room allotted to Rajkumari Devi has been locked and she is being asked to leave. Paras, who claims to worship late Paswan, is behind the humiliation of bhabhi (sister-in-law), who is old and does not enjoy good health. But, we stand in her support,” said Tiwari.
No complaint has, so far, been lodged with the police in this regard and Paras, who heads the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party, could not be reached for comments.
The latest row could be seen as part of the tussle between Chirag Paswan and Paras over the “political legacy” of late Ram Vilas Paswan, one of the tallest dalit leaders of his generation.
Months after the demise of Paswan senior, the Lok Janshakti Party was split by Paras, who left Chirag isolated and went on to enjoy a berth in the Union cabinet.
Barring Chirag, all other LJP MPs, including Ram Chandra Paswan’s son Prince Raj, had then rallied behind Paras who had sought to portray himself as the true political heir to his late brother.

According to ECR’s chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra, among the fourth zonal railways of the Indian Railways, the ECR stands at the second rank after south East Central Railway (SECR), which has registered freight loading worth Rs 29107. 62 crore, followed by ECR 26106 crore, East Coast Railway (ECoR) Rs 26005 crore and South Eastern Railway (SER) Rs 18749 crore, he said.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, ECR registered a record total earning of Rs 31,303 crore, a remarkable increase driven primarily by its freight operations. The railway earned Rs 26,106 crore from the freight segment alone, contributing significantly to the overall growth of Indian Railways’ revenue, the CPRO said, adding that the ECR loaded exactly 200.32 MT freight in the 2024-25 fiscal.

The consistent growth in both freight and passenger revenue underscores the ECR’s operational efficiency and its increasing role in the overall economic development of the region, he said.

The DM said over 30 state and national-level projects are in various stages of construction in the district and the officials have been directed to remove the obstacles for their speedy completion.
Singh also instructed the agencies involved in construction to carry on the work in accordance with the standard operating procedure to eliminate any risk element.
Talking about the Patna metro rail project, the DM said no cases relating to land acquisition or transfer were pending and other obstacles were tackled by sub-divisional level officers.
He said, as per report of last month’s PMG meeting, the need was felt to shift the Radha Krishna temple that was coming in the way of PMCH metro rail station. “Alternative arrangement for shifting the temple and its priest’s residence has been done, but the priest has refused to take notice related to the matter and even locals are opposing this. The matter is being taken up by the department for resolution,” said the report.
He said the officers have brought to notice that nod is required for beginning work on the construction of Khemnichak metro rail station. DMRC officials have stated that around 5,000 square meter land that was granted for the project was hanging in limbo, because it is meant for a park under Samagra Udyan Yojana, and an alternative land has to be provided.
Danapur-Bihta elevated corridor is also facing problems and the agency entrusted with the work has said that it was facing issues while working on the 2.5-km stretch.

Patna: Two deaths by suicides by two employees of a micro-finance company in the state capital have puzzled the police.
The first incident took place on March 21, when one Sachin Kumar, an employee of micro-finance company died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his rented accommodation in Gayatri Nagar under Rupaspur police station area. His body was found hanging inside his room on March 22 morning, when his wife returned home from Bhagalpur.
Subsequently, on the same day, another employee of the same firm, Ananya Kumari, 24, died by suicide by hanging herself at her flat in Rukanpura area in the evening. Earlier in the day, she had visited Sachin’s flat with another colleague. SHO, Rupaspur police station, Ranvijay Kumar, said the first case was registered on March 22, while the second on Saturday.
“The police are probing the case from all angles. Both the victims’ families accused the manager of the company of creating pressure on their employees and using foul language against them. No suicide note was found in their rooms. We are collecting the CDR record of the victims,” he said. “Initially, it appears to be a case of a love affair. There are unanswered questions why Ananya went to Sachin’s house the next day, and after knowing about his suicide, she also hanged herself. The girl wrote on her hand with a marker before the suicide that she was under work pressure. Investigation is underway, and things will be clear after the probe,” the SHO told this reporter.
Ananya’s cousin, Jyoti Jha, said her cousin went to Sachin’s house after she received a call from the zonal head of the company. “She had her phone in hand, indicating she had received a call. We don’t know what happened in the office as there are no CCTV cameras inside. She usually used to return to home around 6.30pm, but on March 22, she reached home at 4.30pm and went to her room and died by suicide. The family broke the door and found her hanging. They saw a message written on her hand, stating that no life is valued in this office,” she said.

  • Centre OKs Patna-Sasaram four-lane project to ease traffic, boost connectivity

Patna: The Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved the construction of the four-lane access-controlled Patna-Ara-Sasaram corridor in Bihar at an estimated cost of Rs 3,712 crore.
The corridor, spanning 120km from Patna to Sasaram, will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), an official from the Union ministry of road transport & highways (MoRTH) said.
Currently, connectivity between Sasaram, Ara and Patna relies on existing state highways – SH-2 (Bihta-Pali-Arwal), SH-12 (Ara-Sasaram), SH-81 (Sakaddi-Nasriganj) and SH-102 (Behea-Piro-Sikarahta-Danwar Bihta) – which take three to four hours to traverse due to heavy congestion, particularly in Ara town. The new greenfield corridor, combined with the 10.6km upgrade of an existing brownfield highway, would alleviate increasing congestion and cater to the needs of densely populated areas such as Ara, Garhani, Piro, Bikramganj, Mokar and Sasaram, the official said.
“The project alignment integrates with major transport corridors, including NH-19, NH-319, NH-922, NH-131G and NH-120, ensuring seamless connectivity to Aurangabad, Kaimur and Patna. It will also enhance access to two airports (Patna’s Jaya Prakash Narayan International Airport and the upcoming Bihta airport), four major railway stations (Sasaram, Ara Junction, Danapur and Patna) and one Inland Water Terminal in Patna. It will also provide direct access to the Patna Ring Road, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers,” he said.
Upon completion, the corridor will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, improving connectivity between Patna, Ranchi and Varanasi. The official added, “The project aligns with the govt’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening infrastructure while generating employment and fostering socio-economic development in Bihar.”
“The project will also generate 48 lakh man-days of employment and open new avenues for growth, development and prosperity in and around Patna,” he said.
