  • Belgian court rejects Choksi’s bail plea, says his lawyer

A Belgian court on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) rejected the bail plea of Mehul Choksi, the diamond merchant who is a prime accused in the ₹13,000-crore PNB fraud case, his lawyer said.

The diamantaire was arrested in Antwerp by the Belgian police on April 12 based on an extradition request moved by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

His lawyer Vijay Aggarwal said the bail plea of his client has been rejected during a court hearing on Tuesday.

Mr. Choksi will contest his extradition from jail custody now, a senior official said.

Mr. Choksi, 65, was located in Belgium last year after he reached there sometime in November 2023 on the grounds of getting medical treatment.

He had been staying in Antigua after leaving India in 2018 and had taken citizenship of the Caribbean country even though his Indian citizenship is stated to be valid.

At least two open-ended arrest warrants, issued by a special court in Mumbai in 2018 and 2021, have been shared by the Indian agencies with their Belgian counterparts as part of the extradition request, official sources had said earlier.

Mr. Aggarwal had earlier stated that Choksi was “extremely sick and undergoing treatment for cancer”.

Mr. Choksi, Nirav Modi, their family members and employees, bank officials and others were booked by the CBI and the ED in 2018 for perpetrating the alleged loan fraud at the Brady House branch of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Mumbai.

It was alleged that Mr. Choksi, his firm Gitanjali Gems and others “committed the offence of cheating against PNB in connivance with certain bank officials by fraudulently getting the LOUs (letters of undertaking) issued and got the FLCs (foreign letter of credit) enhanced without following prescribed procedure and caused a wrongful loss to the bank”.

The CBI has filed at least two chargesheets against him in this case while the ED has filed three prosecution complaints.

Terrorists cursed Modi, asked my father to recite Islamic verse before shooting him: Daughter

The family was cowering in fear inside a tent when terrorists came. They asked Santosh Jagdale, 54, to come out and recite an Islamic verse. When he couldn’t, they shot him thrice: once in the head, then behind the ear and then his back.

The 26-year-old daughter of the Pune businessman recounted to PTI the terror the family went through in the horrific attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).

After her father fell to the ground, the gunmen turned on her uncle who was lying next to her and shot him several times in the back.

“We were a group of five people, including my parents. We were in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam and were at a spot called Mini Switzerland when the firing began,” Asavari Jagdale told PTI in a telephonic interview five hours after the shooting.

According to officials, a total of 26 people were killed and several injured, most of them tourists in the deadliest terrorist attack in Kashmir in recent years.

Ms. Asavari does not know if her father and uncle are alive or among the dead.

She, her mother and another female relative were spared, and locals and security forces evacuated them to Pahalgam Club where they remain clueless about the fate of the two men.

Ms. Asavari, 26, a human resource professional in Pune, said the family was on a vacation at the idyllic spot when they heard firing from “people who wore clothes similar to those of local police” descending from the nearby hill.

“We immediately rushed to a nearby tent for protection. So did six to seven others (tourists). We all lay down on the ground as protection against the firing which we then assumed was between the terrorists and security personnel,” Ms. Asavari said.

She said the group of terrorists first came to a nearby tent and opened fire.

“Then they came to our tent and asked my father to come out,” she said.

“They said ‘Chaudhari tu bahar aa ja’” Ms. Asavari said.

Then the terrorists blamed them for supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after which they made some statements to deny that Kashmiri militants kill innocent people, women and children, she said.

“They then asked my father to recite an Islamic verse (probably the Kalma). When he failed to do so, they pumped three bullets into him, one on the head, one behind the ear and another in the back,” she said.

“My uncle was next to me. The terrorists fired four to five bullets into him.

They shot several other males who were at the spot. There was nobody to help. No police or army, who reached 20 minutes later. Even the locals there were reciting the Islamic verse.

“The people who took us to the spot on ponies helped us— three women, including myself and my mother— make the return journey. Later we underwent medical examination to check for injuries and were then shifted to Pahalgam Club.

“The firing happened around 3:30 p.m. It has been five hours and there has been no update on my father’s and uncle’s medical condition,” Ms. Asavari said.

Priyanka Gandhi alleges misuse of probe agencies, claims PM Modi’s advisers giving wrong suggestions

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticises PM Modi for misusing probe agencies for political purposes and defends her family against baseless allegations in ongoing ED investigations.

    New Delhi:

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of receiving misguided advice from his advisers regarding the ongoing Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigations into her family. Gandhi claimed that the Indian public is fully aware of the misuse of investigative agencies for political purposes.

Speaking to the media, Gandhi remarked that she was still awaiting an “invitation” from the ED for questioning and expressed curiosity as to why she had not been summoned yet. “I’m waiting for the ED to call me. Why haven’t they summoned me yet?” she questioned, dismissing the allegations against her family as baseless.

The Congress leader also rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s accusations against her mother, Sonia Gandhi, and brother, Rahul Gandhi, regarding the alleged illegal acquisition of properties worth Rs 2,000 crore through the National Herald issue. Gandhi clarified that no property was owned by the Gandhis personally, nor could they sell or transfer such assets. “How can it be called a property grab when the assets are not in their names?” she asked, describing the charges as a “pack of lies.”

Addressing the provocative actions of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, who was spotted carrying a bag labeled “National Herald ki loot” during a recent ‘One Nation, One Election’ meeting, Priyanka Gandhi questioned whether the BJP leader was carrying the alleged “loot” in her bag.

Further commenting on the ED’s ongoing probe, Priyanka Gandhi also defended her husband, Robert Vadra, who has been repeatedly summoned by the ED in connection with a 2008 Haryana land deal linked to a money laundering case. She expressed frustration over the line of questioning, highlighting that Vadra was being interrogated about irrelevant matters, such as a Rs 4 lakh transaction he made to his mother 17 years ago. “Why is my husband being asked about a Rs 4 lakh gift to his mother?” Gandhi asked, reiterating that the Congress party had been in power in Haryana in 2008.

Priyanka Gandhi also expressed her concerns while observing the ED’s questioning process. She claimed that many individuals being summoned by the agency were victims of politically motivated investigations related to extortion or vendettas. Despite the repeated questioning, she emphasised that her family members were fully cooperating with the authorities.

Referring to the larger picture, Gandhi said that PM Modi’s tactics were failing and that the public could see through the political motives behind the investigations.

The ED had recently filed a chargesheet before a special court in New Delhi, accusing Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others in the National Herald case, alleging the laundering of nearly Rs 988 crore. In addition, Robert Vadra’s statement was recorded last week about the money laundering case linked to the 2008 Haryana land deal.

The Congress party continues to allege that the investigations are politically motivated, aiming to tarnish the Gandhi family’s image rather than uncover any legitimate wrongdoing.

Bansuri Swaraj takes swipe at Congress

Swaraj also took a sharp swipe at the Congress party, alleging serious misuse of media institutions in the National Herald case. Speaking about the matter, she remarked that for the first time, corruption penetrated the fourth pillar of democracy — the media. Citing the Enforcement Directorate’s charge sheet, Swaraj said it exposes the Congress party’s traditional style of functioning and ideology, where institutions meant for public service are allegedly repurposed for personal gain.

She further accused the grand old party of transforming public trusts into private assets under the guise of serving the people. Describing the matter as extremely grave, Swaraj emphasised that the Congress party and its top leadership must be held accountable for these actions.

ED files chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi

Recently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with several others, accusing them of laundering Rs 988 crore. The chargesheet was submitted before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court under multiple sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The chargesheet named Sonia Gandhi, the former Congress president, as accused no. 1, while her son Rahul Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as accused no 2.

What is the National Herald case?

The National Herald was a newspaper launched by Jawaharlal Nehru and fellow freedom fighters in 1938. It was founded with an aim to represent the views of the liberal faction within the Indian National Congress. Published by Associated Journals Limited, the newspaper evolved into a key mouthpiece for the Congress party post-Independence. In addition to the English daily, AJL also brought out Hindi and Urdu publications. However, by 2008, the National Herald ceased operations after being burdened with debts exceeding Rs 90 crore.

The controversy surrounding its assets gained momentum in 2012 when BJP leader and lawyer Subramanian Swamy lodged a complaint in a trial court. He alleged that certain Congress leaders had committed cheating and breach of trust in the process of acquiring AJL. According to Swamy, the firm Young Indian Ltd had acquired control over the National Herald’s assets through what he termed a “malicious” takeover.

PM Modi lauds Saudi Arabia as ‘trusted friend and strategic ally’ as he departs on key visit

PM Modi described Saudi Arabia as “a trusted friend and strategic ally,” highlighting the significant growth in bilateral ties since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019.

    New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the “limitless potential” of India’s strengthening relationship with Saudi Arabia as he arrives in Jeddah for a two-day visit—his third to the Kingdom since 2016.

In an interview with Arab News ahead of his arrival, PM Modi described Saudi Arabia as “a trusted friend and strategic ally,” highlighting the significant growth in bilateral ties since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019.

“Our partnership has limitless potential,” PM Modi said. “In a world full of uncertainties, our bond stands strong, as a pillar of stability.” He praised Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman’s leadership, calling him “a strong advocate of our bilateral ties” and a visionary who has inspired global admiration through the reforms under Vision 2030.

Here is the complete text from PM Modi’s interview to Arab News:

“Every time I have met him, His Royal Highness has left a deep impression on me. His insights, his forward-thinking vision, and his passion for fulfilling the aspirations of his people are truly remarkable,” he said.

Highlighting shared economic ambitions, Modi noted that trade between the two countries had grown even amid global challenges, with energy, agriculture and fertilizers as key sectors. He welcomed deeper integration of Saudi and Indian businesses, particularly in emerging sectors like green hydrogen and technology. “Indian companies have also maintained a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Modi congratulated the Kingdom for winning the bids to host World Expo 2030 and FIFA World Cup 2034, describing the dual successes as a matter of “immense pride.” He also pointed to growing defense cooperation and landmark joint military exercises as signs of increasing strategic trust.

On the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), launched during the G20 Summit in September 2023, Modi said the project would be “a key catalyst of commerce, connectivity and growth in the entire region.”

In a statement, the Indian government said the visit “reflects the importance India attaches to its bilateral relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

    Q) Saudi-India ties are on an upswing. How do you assess the progress made in the strengthening of bilateral relations since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019?

    A) First of all, I want to thank His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his kind invitation. I am delighted to be here on my third visit. I take great pride in our relations with Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of India’s most valued partners — a maritime neighbor, a trusted friend and a strategic ally.

Our connection is not new. It is rooted in civilizational exchanges that go back to centuries. From ideas to trade, there has been a constant flow between our two great nations.

Our relations have been on an upward trajectory since 2014. I fondly recall that in 2016, I had the honor of receiving The Order of King Abdulaziz from His Majesty King Salman.

The formation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019 marked a major milestone. Since then, cooperation between us has expanded across many sectors. And let me tell you, this is just the beginning. Our partnership has limitless potential.

What anchors our relationship is mutual trust and goodwill. In a world full of uncertainties, our bond stands strong, as a pillar of stability. I truly believe these are promising times for India-Saudi Arabia ties. And, I must say, the Saudi leadership has played a vital role in strengthening this partnership.

India and Saudi Arabia will keep moving forward together — for peace, progress and prosperity, not just for our people, but for the entire world.

    Q) Given your previous seven meetings with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, how would you characterize the personal rapport between the leadership of both countries? Has his rapport influenced the bilateral relationship in any way?

    A) Every time I have met him, His Royal Highness has left a deep impression on me. His insights, his forward-thinking vision, and his passion for fulfilling the aspirations of his people are truly remarkable.

Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia has undergone tremendous social and economic transformation. The reforms he has undertaken have not just inspired the region, but also caught the attention of the entire world.  One can see the transformational changes in the country under Vision 2030 in a very short period.

I value the personal warmth and trust we share. And, yes, this personal rapport has naturally translated into how both countries give priority to our partnership. He is a strong advocate of our bilateral ties. He has been a great supporter of the Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia and our people living in Saudi Arabia deeply admire him.

When we talk, we focus on making this partnership future-ready. Jeddah has had a special connection with India. For centuries, this famed city has been one of the principal arteries for our trade and people-to-people exchanges. As a gateway to Makkah, for ages, our pilgrims have walked the by-lanes of Jeddah on their holy journey for Hajj and Umrah.

    Q) Saudi Arabia is India’s fifth-largest trading partner. What initiatives are being considered to further diversify and expand this economic partnership so that both countries can better face challenges together?

    A) Our economic ties are as old as the monsoon winds. Given the proximity of our nations and the complementarity of our economies, there is a natural connect. That is why even during global challenges, our trade ties have not just survived, but they have grown.

While sectors like energy, agriculture and fertilizers are the main areas of our trade, efforts at diversification have borne fruits. Indian businesses and Saudi industry are building stronger connections.

Building stronger connect between our businesses and industry and enhancing investment partnership is adding resilience to this relationship. Saudi Arabia is a leading energy partner for India. Likewise, India is contributing to food security in Saudi Arabia. I am told people in Saudi Arabia prefer Indian rice! India too loves Saudi dates.

I also see several complementarities between Saudi Vision 2030 and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 (Developed India 2047 initiative).

Bilateral investments between our countries have also been increasing. Today, the Indian growth story offers immense opportunities for Saudi majors to invest and partner, from space economy to global supply chain collaborations.

Indian companies have also maintained a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia. They are playing a crucial role in the realization of Saudi Vision 2030.

Our goal is to enhance this connect.

India and Saudi Arabia are working on a Bilateral Investment Treaty. The proposed Free Trade Agreement between India and GCC has immense potential to transform the economic relationship between India and Saudi Arabia, and the region in general.

  • Army veterans outraged after IAF officer assaulted in Bengaluru: ‘Does he have to learn every language?’

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Aditya Bose and his wife Squadron Leader Madhumita were assaulted in a road rage incident in Bengaluru.

    New Delhi:

Army veterans have voiced strong condemnation over the alleged assault of IAF Wing Commander Aditya Bose and his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita, in Bengaluru. What began as a road rage incident reportedly turned into a conflict over language. Veterans are now raising concerns about whether defence personnel should be expected to learn the local language of every state they are posted in.

Army veterans on Bengaluru road rage incident

In a post on X, former Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General (retd) KJS Dhillon pointed out that a defense officer is typically posted to 10-15 different states throughout their service. He questioned whether it is necessary for these officers to learn the language of each state before they can lay down their lives protecting the nation, including its people.

“Banglore – Always knew it as a beautiful city with wonderful ppl living in peace & harmony. A defence forces officer gets posted to 10 – 15 states during his service … Does he have to learn the language of each state before he lays down his life protecting his Nation including the people of that state?” he said.

Major Manik M Jolly (retd) expressed his concern, stating that the “speak Kannada” issue is really getting out of hand. “This – speak Kannada- thing is really getting out of hands ! A serving Wing Commander posted in DRDO, Bangalore was attacked viciously now. Soldiers serve across the nation doing their duties. It’s shameful that a state would treat them this way,” he wrote on X.

“Absolutely shameful. But just saying so won’t do. The culprits have to be brought to book and an example set. Also the Centre needs to consider legislating on methodology to control and eliminate such regional and linguistic fanaticism. Enough is enough,” said another army veteran.

Wing Commander Aditya Bose and wife assaulted

Wing Commander Bose shared a video and information about the entire incident. However, the Bengaluru police arrested the accused in the case.

According to Wing Commander Bose, the incident was reported on April 18, 2025, while the couple was en route from the DRDO colony in CV Raman Nagar to the airport when a biker allegedly stopped their car and began hurling verbal abuses in Kannada. After this, the situation escalated when the biker noticed the DRDO sticker on their vehicle, leading to further derogatory remarks directed at both him and his wife, Bose said.

After he came out of the car to address the confrontation, Bose was reportedly struck on the forehead using a key by the biker, resulting in profuse bleeding. He also stated that other individuals on the road joined the initial attacker, with one person picking up a stone and hitting him on the head.

As the violent incident unfolded, the officer recorded a video while he was injured, his face and neck covered in blood.

The wing commander in the video said: “A bike came from behind and stopped our car. The guy started abusing me in Kannada. When they saw the DRDO sticker on my car and said ‘You DRDO people’ .. . they also abused my wife. The moment I got out of my car, the biker hit me with a key on my forehead, and there was blood.”

He also stated that he stood at the scene, shouting and questioning how citizens could treat a member of the armed forces in such a way. He also expressed resentment, pointing out the irony of being attacked despite serving in the defense of the nation.

After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the Bengaluru police took note of the incident and were working to verify the details. Moreover, the police were also trying to establish contact with the victim to investigate further.

  • JD Vance, family begin India visit with spiritual stop at Akshardham Temple | Video

US Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his family, visited New Delhi’s Akshardham Temple, where they posed for group photographs, with his three children drawing special attention in their charming traditional Indian outfits.

    New Delhi:

On the first day of his four-day visit to India, US Vice President JD Vance visited the iconic Akshardham Temple in New Delhi along with his wife Usha Vance and their three children. The visit, steeped in cultural significance, turned into a charming moment of soft diplomacy as the Vance children stole the show dressed in vibrant traditional Indian attire, complete with flower garlands.

“Thank you all so much for your hospitality and kindness in welcoming me and my family to this beautiful place. It is a great credit to India that you built a beautiful temple with precision and care. Our kids, in particular, loved it. God bless,” the vice president wrote in the temple guest book.

The Vice President and his family were seen admiring the intricate carvings and grandeur of the temple complex. The group posed for photos in front of the temple’s ornate backdrop, with Vance and his Indian-American wife, Usha, offering prayers and taking a brief spiritual pause before official meetings.

Once done, the family posed for camera crews outside the imposing facade of the temple. “They were given a traditional welcome after which they had ‘darshan’. A carved wooden elephant, a model of the Delhi Akshardham Temple and children’s books were gifted to the family,” a priest at the temple told media.

Temple volunteer Meera Sondagar added that the vice president was especially captivated by the intricately sculpted Gajendra Peeth, a plinth adorned with carvings of elephants that symbolises strength and wisdom.

“He was shown the entire Akshardham complex and was deeply moved by the experience. He said he felt a sense of peace here,” she said. The temple also put out a post on X about the visit.

“The U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Second Lady Usha Vance and their children visited Swaminarayan Akshardham in Delhi ‘their first stop in India’ experiencing its majestic art, architecture and timeless values of faith, family and harmony.”

“The Vance family explored the mandir’s majestic art and architecture, experiencing India’s heritage and cultural depth and they appreciated the messages of harmony, family values, and timeless wisdom embodied in the Akshardham campus,” it added.

JD Vance’s arrival in India comes amid heightened trade tensions between the two nations, as the US contemplates raising tariffs on Indian exports from 10% to 26% if a trade deal is not reached soon. The visit is expected to be critical in reinvigorating India-US ties, especially as Vance prepares for a key meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today.

According to the White House, the bilateral talks will focus on the finalisation of a long-pending trade pact and broader strategic cooperation. Vance’s trip is both politically and personally symbolic, as it also highlights his Indian heritage through Usha Vance and showcases cultural ties between the two countries.

Following their stop in Delhi, the Vance family is scheduled to visit Jaipur on April 22 and Agra on April 23, where they are expected to continue engaging with India’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Concern over Bangladesh embankment along river on Tripura border

GUWAHATI A high-level delegation on Sunday (April 20, 2025) visited southern Tripura to assess the flood protection measures after a massive embankment being constructed by the Bangladesh government along a border river triggered flood worries in the State.

The flood-prone Muhuri River runs along much of the stretch of the India-Bangladesh border in the South Tripura district. Residents of the district headquarters, Belonia and other border villages close to the river raised an alarm a few days ago after the Bangladesh authorities started constructing an embankment on the opposite bank.

The catastrophic flood and landslides of August 2024, which damaged many river embankments along the India-Bangladesh border, worked on the minds of the border residents.

“We have identified 43 such locations in different districts, including South Tripura, where repair work has begun or will start soon. All the repairing and related works will be completed by June,” the State’s Public Works Department Secretary Kiran Gitte told journalists after meeting with the residents and public representatives.

“The work will be done around the clock. Five additional engineers will be posted in South Tripura, as the volume of work in the district is huge,” he said.

The Border Security Force’s Tripura Frontier Inspector General, Ashwani Kumar Sharma, accompanied Mr Gitte for the on-the-spot survey of the situation arising out of the embankment work on the Bangladesh side of the riverine border. Other officials included the district’s administrative and police chiefs, and senior officials of various departments concerned.

    Centre’s attention sought

On Saturday (April 19, 2025), local CPI (M) legislator Dipankar Sen requested the South Tripura District Magistrate and senior officials of the BSF to draw the Centre’s attention to the flood threat posed by the embankment work in Bangladesh, so that the issue could be taken up with Dhaka.

Congress leaders in northern Tripura’s Unakoti district also sought the Centre’s intervention in a similar embankment constructed by Bangladesh, threatening district headquarters Kailashahar and several border villages. The party organised a series of agitations to underscore the gravity of the issue.

“Bangladesh is constructing these embankments unilaterally,” senior party leader and former minister Birajit Sinha said.

Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha apprised Home Minister Amit Shah of the embankment issue.

“The Chief Minister highlighted the potential impact of the Bangladeshi embankment in the Unakoti district and possible floods on the Indian side. He urged the Home Minister to take up the matter with Dhaka,” an official at the Chief Minister’s Office said.

The two countries agreed to construct mutually beneficial embankments along the Muhuri within their borders to stabilise the river prone to changing its course, after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Bangladesh in 2011.

Bomb threat at Puducherry CM’s residence sparks panic, declared hoax after investigation

A bomb threat at Puducherry CM N. Rangasamy’s residence, later found to be a hoax, sparked panic and led to an extensive search by authorities.

    Puducherry:

In a shocking incident that sent shockwaves through Puducherry, an anonymous individual sent an email threatening a bomb at the residence of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. The threat, which also mentioned the presence of bombs at two nearby hotels in the Delarshpet area, led to a swift response from the police and bomb disposal squads.

On receiving the alarming email on Saturday, hotel management immediately informed the authorities. Within minutes, a team of cybercrime investigators and bomb disposal experts, along with search dogs, were dispatched to the Chief Minister’s residence and the two hotels mentioned in the email.

The search operation lasted for over three hours, with officers scouring every inch of the premises. Despite the extensive investigation, no explosives or any suspicious objects were found. During the search of the CM’s residence, it was confirmed that N. Rangasamy was away at a temple for prayers, which further reassured authorities about the situation.

Police have since concluded that the bomb threat was a hoax, causing unnecessary panic. The authorities have registered a case and have ramped up their efforts to trace the individual responsible for sending the threatening email.

While the situation was eventually resolved without any danger, the incident has raised concerns about the increasing number of bomb threats being reported in recent days. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
